What we learned from the Academy:
Vivien Leigh has Asian ancestry.
Hilary Swank is considered the 1st actress of Hispanic descent to win Best Actress (grandmother was Mexican)
Jessica Chastain is 2nd actress of Hispanic descent to win Best Actress (father is Hispanic).
#Oscars
Only two acknowledged WOC have won Best Actress: Halle Berry in 2002 and Michelle Yeoh.
14 Black actresses have been nominated for Best Actress but haven't won, including Angela Bassett, Diahann Carroll, Dorothy Dandridge, Viola Davis, Whoopi Goldberg, Diana Ross, Cecily Tyson.
Viola Davis and Whoopi Goldberg have both won Best Supporting Actress #Oscars as have 7 other Black women: Hattie McDaniel (the 1st), Jennifer Hudson, Octavia Spencer, Mo'Nique, Lupita Niyong'o, Regina King and Ariana DuBose.
I made this list and the one Sunday night of women the Academy counts as Asian winners of Best Actress, Vivien Leigh, Natalie Portman and Cher, bc there is a misperception that many WOC have won awards & last week there were comments in the media that too many WOC were nominated.
When 20% of America is Latinx and 14% is Black and 6% is Asian, our award systems should reflect those demographics. Also, the Academy has yet to comprehend that half of filmmakers are female. Yet only three women in 95 years have won for Best director. Let's do better next year.
If all the women in the Best Actress category are white and a storied Black actress is snubbed, shouldn't we ask ourselves if that is a factor of racism? One Academy voter said that Viola Davis, an EGOT, had enough awards already. No one says that about Streep or McDormand.
#Oscars95 was fabulous. But despite two of the four acting awards going to Asian actors and a very diverse group of presenters, it was still a very white and very male event. That is simply not reflective of either US demographics or the movie-going public.

The first person "who identifies as Asian"? Michelle Yeoh is Malaysian. She IS Asian.
Neither Meg Tilly nor Merle Oberon won the Best Actress Oscar, though both were nominated and both are Asian. So this phrasing takes away from the historic nature of Michelle Yeoh's win. (Though it is terrible that Merle Oberon was forced to pass as white to secure lead roles.)
The Academy taking credit for Oscar nominations of women expected to hide their racial/ethnic heritage is not the diversity flex they think it is. It's tragic this happened to any actress. It makes Michelle Yeoh's speech referencing people who look like her all the more poignant.

Probably one of the most shocking realizations we come to as adults (if we are at all conscious) is that few people feel even a little guilt or remorse about treating other people badly. Most people feel justified in their actions, even (or especially) when they are wrong.
I've been thinking about this while writing an essay on ghosting &accountability. People just don't want to be told that they've behaved badly or hurtfully so they just pretend their victim doesn't exist. It's wild when you think about it from a larger sociological vantage point.
We all witnessed Elroy ghosting an employee last week. Then attacking them. Then being dragged for it because he did it in public. Then coming to some detente. But how often does this happen off the internet and not with the world's wealthiest billionaire? A lot.

This is a really long piece and I know most people won't read the whole thing, so I want to do a🧵 about it because it says a lot about gender, race, backlash and movie-making.

Four 2023 Oscars secret ballot voters share Academy Awards picks
1/🧵
ew.com/awards/oscars/…
I read this because some outtakes folks screenshot from the very beginning of the piece were egregiously racist and sexist about women actresses and directors. But there's more--both of that and the antithesis of that: paeans to Angela Bassett,Michelle Yeoh and Sarah Polley.
2/🧵
These are four anonymous voters: an actor, director, marketer and costume designer. Their bona fides are detailed. Other than the actor we don't know gender or race, but 99% of Academy costume designers are women and 91% of Academy directors are men, so...

This day has been such a rollercoaster. Wednesday is a deadline day, so lots of pressure. The Wife would feed me and be a cheerleader. These days just are so vast and difficult without her. And then it's International Women's Day. Without her. Everything is without her.
🧵1/
So there I was, midday, with another story to write & just started crying & couldn't stop. I could feel it in my heart. I had to pull myself together & get back to work. But I was in this terrible, dark place. Then I did this really great interview & it reminded me of who I am.
2/
Then I came on here all upbeat and saw someone trending who I have interviewed in the past who's adopted some harmful stances. And I thought about my interview and how we get to be better or worse as we get older. We should all choose better. Because it is a choice.

On what feels like day bazillion, but is about day 12 of this not-COVID respiratory thing. Everyone who's had it says it hangs on for weeks. Being sick makes me miss The Wife more, which I didn't think possible. Her mere presence when I was ill was such a comfort. 💔 Beautiful middle aged woman holding a black cat.
I'm just desperate to extricate from the physical trap here by raising 💰for mobility aids--the electric wheelchair and stairlift for outside that insurance should pay for but doesn't so I can get some pressing medical issues taken care of. Poverty is such a prison.
🧵
When a spouse dies, a woman's income plummets. In researching widowhood in America I've been stunned by how young many widows are, how many there are (3k every day/12M currently) and how poor most are. Yet we never talk about this. Why is that? Rhetorical: IYKYK.

Michael Knowles, a Daily Wire host, says that states should "ban transgenderism entirely." He also attacks gay rights and marriage equality.

Knowles is saying that more than 1.6M trans Americans should be eradicated--like your kids or your family.
This is pure Nazi eugenicism. Imagine being a trans kid and hearing someone talk about you and your life this way? I was put in a psychiatric unit for conversion therapy at 16 to try and de-lesbian me. It almost killed me. Don't keep doing this.
I reported on what the GOP is doing to queer and trans people with dozens of bills in state legislatures. Why is the GOP focused on controlling LGBTQ people?
