'Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing in the Art and Antiquities Market' report by Financial Action Task Force, global money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog, cites case of Yes Bank CMD Rana Kapoor purchasing painting from Priyanka Gandhi at inflated price.
n1
Here is how #FATF presents ED's case on Kapoor buying painting from Priyanka Gandhi as an example of 'Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing':
"The below case, for example, takes advantage of the price volatility of some cultural objects."
n2
"This can be done with art of no or little value, together with false sales/false auction, or under/over-pricing. The case revealed that the suspect bought art of no actual value at a price of $264000 from a close associate of a corrupt politician in order to pay kickbacks."
n3
"Mr. A was MD and CEO of an Indian bank who misused his position during his tenure. He sanctioned loans of the rupee equivalent of USD 628 million to business entities incurring losses or with negative credit, deliberately violating existing norms and regulations."
n4
"A money laundering investigation revealed that Mr. A used his influence to sanction loan to a loss incurring entity, Company B. Investigations revealed Company B diverted the loan to 79 shell companies including Company C, controlled and owned by Mr. A and his daughters."
n5
"Company C received $79 million and used part of the funds to purchase assets including art from famous painters and influential people. Mr. A invested a significant amount of proceeds in buying art of famous artists. He had purchased around 44 paintings."
n6
"Mr. A had received awards and accolades from several organisations in inappropriate ways. Investigation revealed in order to pay kickbacks for receiving awards, Mr. A purchased mediocre art from politicians and in turn paid huge kickbacks through banking channels..."
n7
"Mr. A purchased a piece of art from the close relative of a member of the ruling political party at that time for $264000. However, the investigation revealed that this was an over-valuation."
n8
"The price (paid by Mr. A for the painting) was not for art, but rather was a bribe to influence the awarding of the prestigious Indian award ‘Padma Bhushan’ for himself. The trial is ongoing and Mr. A has been in judicial custody since March 2020."
n9
Painting in question is a portrait of Rajiv Gandhi by MF Hussain. He gifted the painting to Rajiv in 1985. Rajiv Gandhi was Prime Minister at the time when he received the gift. It should have gone to the Toshakhana as per law.
Instead, he kept it; Priyanka sold it.

Hello @Independent your correspondent @miss_rai1 has no clue which piece in @nytimes elicited the sharp response from I&B Minister @ianuragthakur Yet she has peddled a false report reeking of bias and you’ve published it without fact-checking.
White West media is truly shameless.
Among agenda-driven White West media @Independent outshines others in peddling fiction out of #India
This leftie paper once (in)famously reported Indian Army jawans were draping themselves in white sheets and descending on Kashmir villages at night as ‘ghosts’ to scare Kashmiris.
Such is the credibility of @Independent and its so-called journalists like @miss_rai1 who are high on fiction and low on facts. They don’t even care to across-check before filing ‘reports’; the paper doesn’t bother with fact-checking before publishing bilious bilge.

As recently as 14 Feb 2023 @Forbes was promoting #SiliconValleyBank as one of America’s “best banks”.
This is just one of innumerable examples of how White West media wilfully cuts corners with the truth and brazenly collaborates with scamsters to shield and protect them.
n1
Now compare @Forbes promoting a failing, collapsing American bank #SiliconVallyBank as one of the ‘Best American Banks”, with their report on #India economy over New Year’s weekend. Trillion became billion and world’s fastest growing big economy became an object of ridicule.
n2
The anti-India agenda, bias and bigotry of White West media is now a given. From @Forbes to @nytimes to @washingtonpost to @WSJ to @BBCWorld to @dw to @CNN to every rag and channel from White West media stables — they are the same: pervert the truth when it comes to #India.

Rahul Gandhi’s baseless claim that Opposition is silenced in India’s Parliament is to cover his own tardy performance as MP and exceptionally low participation in proceedings.
His attendance is way lower than Kerala average; way way lower than national average.
n1
There have been entire sessions of Parliament of India when Congress leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi has scored Zero Attendance.
n2
On an average, Members of Parliament of India have participated in 68 debates.
Congress leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi’s score is a pitiable 6.

Important
On account of Pakistan’s intransigence,
India has issued notice to Pakistan for modification of the Indus Waters Treaty of September 1960. Notice was conveyed on January 25 through respective Commissioners for Indus Waters. This is as per Article XII (3) of IWT.
n1
India has been a steadfast supporter and a responsible partner in implementing IWT in letter and spirit. But Pakistan’s actions have adversely impinged on the provisions of IWT and their implementation, and forced India to issue an appropriate notice for modification of IWT.
n2
In 2015 Pakistan asked for appointment of a Neutral Expert to examine its technical objections to India’s Kishenganga and Ratle Hydro Electric Projects. In 2016, Pakistan unilaterally retracted this request and proposed that a Court of Arbitration adjudicate on its objections.
