Good presentation by @UKAeroInstitute on the energy & technological (tank, refuelling, weight, material, insulation) challenges of hydrogen in aviation. Some great analogy on the ‘single electron’! Many challenges to take on in addition to platform economics on route to net zero.
Fascinating set of presentations on marine applications by @CMB_TECH and @BMT_Global, underlining their vision of future ships but also considerations on the journey to get there amidst uncertainty, lack of clear regulation and in the context of asset in-service life. ⛴️
Key role for ICE remains, moving forward, with electric power suitable for short-range, ferry applications. Ammonia seen as having potential in marine, though not on passenger vessels due to toxicity. 🛳️
Well done @IMechEevents: great programme and good to hear energy and cross-sector industrial perspectives on the role of hydrogen as part of energy transitions. Thank you for inviting me. ✈️

Earlier this week I was able to contribute to the joint The @royalsociety - @RAEngNews “Hydrogen Delivery Plan” residential workshop at which I put across the aviation outlook. (1/n) 🍃
Though near term biogenic SAF is central the only way to deliver ramp up however is through synthetic fuels for which hydrogen is core & I illustrated what this looked like, based on a range of energy transition scenarios, irrespective of what technology outlook is taken.

There is this 1️⃣: “The infrastructure to charge electric vehicles is meanwhile still lacking in the U.S. and many other parts of the world, making owning an EV still a challenge for many types of consumers.” wsj.com/articles/toyot…
There is is also this: 2️⃣ “Mr. Toyoda has argued that fully electric models aren’t the only way to reduce carbon emissions, saying hybrid vehicles sold in large volumes can also deliver a short-term impact. “It’s about what can be done now,” ie time to market.
And then, I would suggest, 3️⃣ the change in OE cost to the customer which is quite a hurdle without aid. And finally, 4️⃣ the fact that once you have lost skills and your supply chain it is hard to row back. This the caution.
