On Canada’s role in Haiti, Biden says he’s not disappointed that Canada is not leading a mission there. He says Canada’s approach makes sense and notes the investments Canada is making in the Haitian national police. He calls it a work in progress.
Trudeau adds that the west needs to act but needs to do so in a way that includes Haitian support. He says Canada is working hand in hand with the US, and that increasing local police capacity isn’t a solution for tomorrow but part of a longer term effort.
On the inflation reduction act, Biden says he doesn’t get how Canada is at a disadvantage with the U.S. subsidies. He says “we each have what the other needs.” Ie. he says Canada has the raw critical minerals and U.S. has processing capacity
On MP Han Dong, Trudeau recommends everyone watch his former colleague’s speech in the House about why he’s leaving the Liberal caucus. He adds that because democracies are by default more open they are also more vulnerable to foreign meddling,
Biden says his administration is not being hypocritical in stymying Canadian oil infrastructure while expanding American drilling. But he skates far around any kind of answer to address his government’s nearly two year delay to the Enbridge Line 5 environmental assessment.
