good morning☀️happy Sunday! Today on #Insiders are ABC referendum corro Dan Bourchier, 9fax (AFR) columnist Jennifer Hewett and 9fax (smh/Age) senior politics corro David Crowe. The interview is with federal Attorney General Mark Dreyfus.
reminder - TO LABOR - that the smh editorialised for Perottet, all corporate media outlets campaigned for the Coalition, and John Howard was exhumed as usual.
opening spiel: Chris Minns wins. Yet another defeat for the Liberals. Continental red-out. Speers shoe-horns a “Peter Dutton is being warned” into the spiel but not who is doing this warning. Perhaps it is Bevan. #Insiders
without so much as a blush Speers says that Anthony Green is predicting Labor will form majority government. The betting markets said so too. Press gallery journalists repeatedly said the exact opposite because they do not report, they campaign.
clips of Perrottet and Minns, two white males banging on with their respectability politick. Ex-murdoch anchor Speers also comments on civility between two white males as tho the press has no bearing on the tone and standard of political coverage.
cross to Ashleigh Rapier, who thankfully is across actual policy positions like Labor being public education, rebuilding the TAFE network that Mike Baird destroyed, and against privatisation.
panel. Davis starts with David. #Insiders
oddly, David and David are not eating crow but discussing the NSW Labor win as though they have insights to share with the electorate. In fact, the electorate gave political journalists a lesson yesterday. #Insiders
Hewett thinks “the nurses and teachers and things during covid” cut through to people. Despite best efforts by her colleagues and bosses ey Jennifer. #Insiders
the civility question goes to Bourchier. I see what he did there. #Insiders
meanness. Civility going forward. Hewett says people liked Perrottet compared to Scott Morrison lol old enough to remember when 9fax and murdoch fabricated a likeability metric to campaign against Bill Shorten. #Insiders
there was a scary pic of Peter Dutton with Chinese language messaging in one electorate tho. Crowe says the Liberals were fighting on two fronts and it took resources defending “city seats” which he calls Liberal seats and claims they did a good job. #Insiders
the referendum. Clip of Dutton speculating about the “executive” word scare campaign seeded by disgraced former ACU VC Greg Craven to resource the Liberal Party soft No campaign. #Insiders
Speers makes the same demand as Dutton. Funny that. Dreyfus tells them both to go jump [paraphrased] #Insiders
you should release the solicitor general advice on the referendum wording because you released the SG advice on Scott Morrison advising the GG to swear him into six seperate ministries, says Speers [paraphrased for accuracy]. There is precedent, Speers claims. #Insiders
the Morrison multiple ministries were secret, says Dreyfus. The referendum process is public. But the SG is not opposed is the point, says Speers. It is not the practice to release SG advice, says Dreyfus. Except those couple of times I cited, says Speers. He gave ONE example.
more entrails obsessing by Speers, which Dreyfus tells him to stop doing. Executive means cabinet and the bureaucracy, Speers tells a KC, in his Wikipedia way. #Insiders
how might it work? Would a department seek advice from the Voice to parliament AND THE EXECUTIVE says Speers. That is a misunderstanding of what this referendum is about, says Dreyfus. #Insiders
Dreyfus explains that the referendum is to establish the Voice in the constitution. What Speers hears: “you said no to my question”. Speers repeats the thing about departments seeking advice. Making the referendum about bureaucracy is a Coalition talking point. #Insiders
do you think the Voice will make a difference to how decisions are made by the parliament *and by government*? Speers is not letting go of the distraction strategy. Dreyfus hopes so. He says decisions informed by First Nations people are better decisions. #Insiders
Dreyfus adds that decisions made about first peoples without consulting or listening are bad policy. #Insiders
back to panel. The wording of the parliamentary supremacy clause is shown. Bourchier says the words are like guard rails. #Insiders
there is something about federal and state which I missed and Bourchier says our constitution is very much about separation of powers between state and federal jurisdictions. #Insiders
clip of Prof Twomey saying the fears of litigation can be allayed. Speers pumps up the credentials of disgraced former ACU VC, plays a clip of craven running his sealioning strategy, and says craven supports the Voice. Bizarre. #Insiders
Crowe says the Voice can be pro-active and it will be up to the Voice to make representations and Albanese says it has to be practical and not just symbolic and conservatives are recoiling from practical change and claiming it will doom the Yes vote yarda yarda #Insiders
Hewett agrees that detail will be sorted out after the referendum. Like Speers, she refers to craven as “some constitutional lawyers”, a lie. Course if their sabotage efforts succeed, there will be nothing to work out will there. #Insiders
there are many Aboriginal advisors now says Hewett with little success to show on key indicators. Nobody talks about self-determination or sovereignty. Nobody asks what a No result would mean. #Insiders
there is a sense that this is becoming about the lawyers, says Bourchier. The prime minister does not want to get bogged down in this legal stuff, chortles Speers, referring to media amplifying craven’s distraction per conflict journalism practices. #Insiders
“a handful at best” of federal Liberals back the Yes vote, says David to David who asks whether a referendum can succeed without being bipartisan. There are political risks in running a No campaign, apparently. To Dutton, that is. #Insiders
the discussion proceeds on the false premise that the Liberal Party room is capable of reaching a consensus position on the referendum. It is not. #Insiders
Albanese is going to proceed with the referendum “with or without Peter Dutton” says Speers. Well dur. Imagine making decisions based on what Peter fucking Dutton will or won’t do. #Insiders
clip of Albanese crying over the referendum going ahead. Crowe says voters respect conviction. The No side has plenty of questions, says Crowe, apparently forgetting momentarily that we are pretending the more detail strategy is not a No campaign. #Insiders
Hewett and Crowe, again, on the Greens position for ending fossil fuel extraction so the planet can remain inhabitable. Clip of the UN Sec Gen saying the IPCC says we need NO NEW COAL AND GAS globally. #Insiders
the Narrabri gas field has been approved and is going ahead, says Crowe, of the incoming NSW Labor government. Hewett murmurs agreement but it is very much the D1 and D2 show today. #Insiders
clips of the nazis and police manhandling Senator Thorpe. Hewett allsides the nazis she says you can’t have polite disagreement except on shows like this. Speers notices what Hewett is doing and says tbf we can all disagree with nazi salutes tho #Insiders
and flicks straight back to bothsides framing. This is such a passionate *debate* of the *culture wars* and “there is not a lot of respect being shown at some of those rallies” says Speers. Nobody owes respect to nazis, David, see. #Insiders
#FinalObs 1 is D1 saying the Aston by-election is a seat that “by rights” should be won by the Liberals. #Insiders
#FinalObs 2 is Bourchier offering tribute to Garma host - a senior Yunupingu? - who is surrounded by family and has been visited by prime ministers an influential man.
Ds 1 and 2 endorse this tribute and Crowe says his dad Crowe senior is 90 and a big fan of the show #Insiders
we go out with an episode of politicians eating sausages. It is Albanese. #Insiders
this has been another edition of watching #Insiders so you don’t have to 👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼

boringest booth ever no pics
we did get a transphobe. He shouted at me that I can not even tell him what a foimoile is and then shouted at the indistinguishable Liberal and Labor dudes that they could not tell him what a foimoile or a moile is either.
then the Liberal dude put on a wide eyed act and said does anyone know what that was about so I explained that the transphobic voter had bought what the Liberal Party candidate selected by Morrison and Perrottet for Warringah last year was selling and surely he remembered.

hearing the herald has gone full Bevan to back the forced birther.
relatively unusual to support marriage equality and support forced birth. Bevan is a special kind of conservative.
old enough to remember when changing leaders was reason enough for corporate media to campaign against Labor governments.

good morning☀️happy Sunday! Today on #Insiders are ABC 730 senior politics corro Laura Tingle, 9fax (smh/Age) international editor Peter Hartcher and murdoch foreign editor Greg Sheridan. The interview is with deputy PM and defence minister Richard Marles.
opening spiel: defending Australia, helping the US, is China a threat. #Insiders
we will not get our first nuclear submarine for a decade? A few decades? Speers repeats “defend strike” sloganeering, repeats the job spruiking from the government. Coalition warmongering is “bipartisanship” while facts from Keating are Labor disunity. #Insiders

Queensland parliament overrides Queensland human rights Act to accelerate criminalisation and incarceration of children.

theguardian.com/australia-news…
increasing incarceration necessarily causes a net increase in violence because incarceration is itself extremely violent. These people are literally claiming that more violence = more community safety.
yet another way police deliberately target and criminalise Black children and do everything in their massive police power to violently destroy kids futures. NSW police do the same with the Suspect Target Management Program (STMP).

“police say they issued a caution under the Young Offenders Act” to the teen who was racist at Latrell Mitchell - ABC radio news.
fascinated to know the charge. A NSW police caution requires people under 18 years old to “make admissions” in a police station. The police cautioning *process* - ie without judicial oversight - takes the child/teen from “presumptive innocent” to “young offender” status.
not everyday NSW police charge a suspect with offensive language for saying racist things. Or not to my knowledge. If that was the charge.
