Why is the government banning TikTok? It’s not about privacy.
The US, Canada, & European Commission banned TikTok on govt devices. There’s mounting pressure on Biden to ban the app. Former FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr expressed concern over data sharing w/ China, but advocates for closer ties w/ Taiwan

Senators Josh Hawley and Marco Rubio have proposed bills to ban TikTok, in what the ACLU has called “a serious violation of our First Amendment rights."

It’s no coincidence that these recent bans have come shortly after the US shot down a Chinese weather balloon. Privacy concerns are being used to wage war on China. The US should focus on passing federal data privacy laws instead of targeting one app. codepink.org/balloon
Only last year, the post-9/11 NSA phone surveillance program was reported to have shut down. Major telecom companies like Verizon gave the government access to hundreds of millions of calls and texts.

Meta's subsidiary WhatsApp was reportedly used by the Saudi government to hack journalist Jamal Khashoggi's phone. Meanwhile, Meta itself used a VPN to spy on users' smartphones for market research in exchange for bribes. Yet WhatsApp is not banned on government devices.
Attempts have been made already, such as when more than one million people ‘checked in’ on Facebook to the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in 2016 to interrupt police ID’ing of those physically preventing the Dakota Access Pipeline

The DHS has surveilled BLM since 2014. This included collecting information like location data & surveilling social media accounts. Information was gathered from events like silent vigils, a funk music parade, & a walk to end breast cancer.

The DHS surveilled BLM organizer Deray McKesson, who they labeled a “professional protestor” who is “known to law enforcement.” His tweets were shared among DHS officials. vice.com/en/article/qv5…
Many countries have laws that attempt to legislate on data privacy. EU’s GPDR applies to companies in all countries that operate in the EU, requires explicit consent for data collection & use, gives individuals rights to their data, & imposes strict penalties for violations.
China has a similar framework with its Shangai and Beijing Data Security Regulations, as well as laws on cybersecurity to personal information.
The US is projecting its invasive policies onto another government. Warmongers are using this to create paranoia & justify even more aggression towards China.

Instead, our leaders should be cooperating with their counterparts in different govts to protect people’s privacy.

☢️Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, issued his annual letter last week.
Fink continues to make misleading statements & pass the buck on the huge financial power he wields to weapons & fossil fuel companies.
Here are a few examples: 🧵 Image
Fink says:
"I’ve long believed that it’s critical for CEOs to use their voice in the world – and there’s never been a more crucial moment for me to use mine.” Image
The truth:
Fink alludes to the intertwined crises of climate change, militarism, war in Ukraine & income inequality. But: BlackRock profits massively from fossil fuels and he's hardly a voice for peace. He has a monstrous stake in growing the war machine.

20 years ago, a US-led coalition invaded Iraq, under the false claim that Saddam Hussien’s government was manufacturing weapons of mass destruction🧵

CONTENT WARNING: torture, violence, death.
Over 1,000,000 Iraqis were killed, another 9,000,000+ were displaced, and some 2,000,000 were disabled. People were killed directly by violence, and others by stress-related heart attacks, ruined sanitation, or lack of healthcare because of war.
The US tortured thousands of Iraqis as part of the “War on Terror,” killing many. The lucky survivors face lasting physical & psychological damage. It was authorized by the highest levels of Gov. They recognized torture use but have never formally apologized or paid reparations

B*rthright is propaganda🧵
B*rthright is a free, 10-day trip offered to young Jews (18-32), to visit Israel and the Golan Heights. The goal is to manufacture a connection and a sense of ownership over the land.
Birthr*ght produces an idealized image of Israel as a project for the self-determination of Jewish people, effectively erasing the occupation from the narrative.

Starting yesterday, 10/25, the US-funded National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is co-hosting the “Global Assembly of the World Movement for Democracy (WMD)” in Taiwan. Let’s take a look at what the NED’s presence in Taiwan means for democracy and peace. (spoiler: it’s not good)
First, some context.
China has been a founding member of the United Nations since 1945. At the time, the country was also in the midst of a civil war at that time. At the end of the war, the Kuomintang government, Republic of China (ROC), faced defeat and retreated to Taiwan.
The Communist Party of China established the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The PRC was soon recognized by many countries in the Global South as the victor in the civil war. However, the US and many in the West took their time recognizing the PRC.

Why do weapons companies have more power than working people in the US?

In the latest from @stephensemler in @jacobin, he explains how the military-industrial complex gets its power. Here are some of his key points: 🧵

jacobin.com/2022/10/pentag…
Currently, military spending continues to reach all-time highs, with Biden's Pentagon budget topping Reagan's. 2/

jacobin.com/2022/10/pentag…
Of the enormous war budget, most of it is going to private companies. This means taxpayer money is being continuously funneled away from public goods and into the pockets of war profiteers. 3/
