🧵🧵For years, Jared Woodfill has led extreme anti-gay campaigns in Texas, comparing LGBTQ people to child molesters.

And for years, he's known of child sex abuse claims against his longtime law partner and Southern Baptist leader Paul Pressler.
texastribune.org/2023/03/27/hou…
Under oath last month, Woodfill said he was told in 2004 that Pressler sexually abused a minor - claims that were made during mediation of an assault lawsuit against Pressler that Woodfill quietly settled for $450,000.
texastribune.org/2023/03/27/hou…
Despite that, Woodfill denied any knowledge of Pressler's behavior in 2016, when a young attorney told him Pressler told him "lewd stories" about being naked with men before inviting him to skinny-dip.
texastribune.org/2023/03/27/hou…
Woodfill's deposition also provides new details on his decades-long relationship with Pressler, a massively important Texas political powerbroker, longtime Southern Baptist leader, one-time White House nominee and high-ranking member of the anti-LGBTQ Council for National Policy.
Under oath, Woodfill said Pressler did almost no work for their firm but was provided a string of personal assistants, nearly all young men, who worked out of his mansion. Two now allege sex abuse/misconduct.

New court records also show that in 2004, leaders of Houston's massive First Baptist Church investigated claims that Pressler had undressed and groped a college student - but found nothing conclusive and feared damaging Pressler's reputation. #SBCtoo

Here is what First Baptist leaders wrote to Pressler about the incident, which they deemed "morally and spiritually inappropriate."

"This kind of behavior, if brought to light, might distort your testimony or cause others to stumble,” they wrote. #SBCtoo #ChurchToo
The new details came via an ongoing, 6-year-old lawsuit in which a man accuses Pressler of decades of rape - enabled by Woodfill & Southern Baptist leaders. Last year, the Texas Supreme Court let the case go forward in a landmark ruling for CSA survivors.

The claims against Pressler - and that Southern Baptist leaders enabled him - were the impetus for five years of reporting by me, @LiseDigger & @John_Tedesco into sex abuse in the Southern Baptist Convention - which led to an ongoing DOJ investigation.

🧵🧵I looked at 25+ drag protests that have occurred in Texas since Pride 2022 - events that are fueling anti-drag panic and numerous bills targeting the LGTBQ community. Here's what I found:
texastribune.org/2023/02/24/tex…
Drag opponents say they're "protecting kids" from drag, which they claim is inherently sexual. Yet they've often harassed and protested adults-only events, or "family friendly" events such as fundraisers for the LGBTQ community and those at churches.
texastribune.org/2023/02/24/tex…
At least 25% of protests/harassment campaigns have been directed at drag story hours. Organizers say they're great for child literacy because they're engaging and fun - not unlike other educational events that rely on costumes or outlandish behavior.

Shamp's backstory makes this even more interesting: He was at J6, prophesied Trump would win, then condemned people who "believed the media more than the prophets" about the outcome of the election.
Point being, it'll be really interesting to see how these folks - who have spent 6 years relaying visions of Trump vs. forces of darkness - try to square their earlier claims with new support for DeSantis, which is sure to get blowback from their most bought-in followers.
As @juliaduin noted, Shamp and other "prophets" have mostly evaded scrutiny for bad predictions - and have actually received a lot of criticism from their circles when they've said they were wrong.

🧵Currently on the @TexasTribune:

-Giant corporations get billions in tax breaks at expense of schools
-Giant corporations accused of polluting Texas' water supply with little oversight from regulators
-Giant corp. gave $50K to regulators who'd stop it from, say, polluting water twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
@TexasTribune @alereports Story 1: How tax breaks for oil and gas companies are subsidized by taxpayers and schools via a controversial program that has been widely criticized for lack of oversight.

In just 2020, oil and gas companies saved $7.6 billion through the program.

Story 2: The EPA says there's an "informal investigation" into whether Texas is following the Clear Water Act. Groups say environmental regulators have exercised very little oversight over corporations and potentially dangerous projects. via @alereports

NEW: Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes - who was just found guilty of seditious conspiracy - told the Jan. 6 committee that roughly **20 percent** of his right-wing militia worked in law enforcement. @TexasTribune
texastribune.org/2022/12/21/jan…
@TexasTribune Rhodes said that, at its peak, the Oath Keepers had about 40,000 dues-paying members.

That means 8,000 law enforcement officers were members, if we're using his estimate that they account for 20 percent of members. #January6thhearings texastribune.org/2022/12/21/jan…
Rhodes' interview with the January 6 committee sheds new light on the makeup of the Oath Keepers. Previous leaks have shown that there were quite a lot of law enforcement involved.

Last week, AP reported Texas AG Ken Paxton’s office — which oversees voter fraud — screened Dinesh D’Souza’s debunked conspiracy film “2000 Mules.”

Here, I take a look at how the film was mainstreamed by the Texas GOP — and why it concerns voting groups. texastribune.org/2022/10/07/tex…
Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and three other Houston-area legislators sponsored a watch party at a local church in June. Another pastor/state rep showed it at his church too.

And Ag Commissioner Sid Miller recently cited it as proof the 2020 election was stolen.
texastribune.org/2022/10/07/tex…
The Texas GOP screened it 3 times at their convention — whereat leaders called for stronger penalties for fraud + officially adopted election conspiracies in their platform.

And Paxton has close ties to the Texas group that provided discredited research.
