2021 is the year I realised that the queer community is ableist to the extent that it’s disabling its own members.
Ableist even to the point that it would kill its own members.
Here’s a thread about why that came as such a shock to me, as a queer activist of over a decade.
🧵1
If 220,982 UK people had been killed in 3 years, two thirds were queer and most people were happy because they mistakenly thought only queers would die, you’d compare it to the AIDS crisis.
You’d call it fascist.
This is the scenario with covid eugenics and disabled people.
2)
A right-wing power grab has taken hold globally because solidarity only exists on the right.
Far-right, ableist, eugenicist rhetoric crept into the mainstream and it’s flourishing in the queer community because of the cowardice and conformity you pretend to stand against.
3)
Cross-disability solidarity is vital and it doesn’t exist in the queer community.
What does exist is acceptance of a few disabilities that are prevalent in activists and organisers, e.g. autism, often with ADH[D if you want to medicalise it], and common mental health issues.
4)
Autistic people are statistically more likely to be out as queer, IMO because being queer is a ridiculous thing to expect us to lie about to make others socially comfortable.
Relative lack of conformity to social norms is ideal for activism. ADH[D] hyperfocus can be too.
5)
Queer people often have poorer mental health, due to discrimination from families, partners, doctors and work.
Also due to high rates of domestic & sexual violence for bi, trans, nonbinary & asexual people.
Having additional disabilities too means additional discrimination.
6)
Although it doesn’t come with money, grassroots queer activists do have power relative to most community members, solely in a community organising context.
They know this.
Creating inaccessible spaces is an abuse of that power.
They know this too.
7)
Queer activists know that #LongCovid and poor outcomes in acute covid are more prevalent in people who are:
-bi
-trans
-women
-racialised
-poor
-disabled
But they CHOOSE to disable them at maskless events.
Due to abandonment during the AIDS crisis, queer activists perfected harm reduction.
If you can give out condoms, you can give out masks at the door with a flyer explaining why they’re vital for survival and solidarity.
You can open windows. Get an air filter. Meet outside.
9)
If you call yourself part of the queer community, particularly as an activist, it’s your obligation to reject the ableist eugenics of your government’s covid policies.
If you push back at state failures on every social issue but covid, you’re an ableist. You’re complicit.
10)
There are currently thousands of trolls targeting #DisabilityTwitter, promoting covid eugenics.
The far-right uses ableism via covid minimising just as much as it uses transphobia to recruit.
If you’re tweeting about transphobia, you need to warn people about this too.
