MAGA isn't rioting in response to Trump's incitement. But that doesn't mean they aren't dangerous. Statistics show that right wing hate has been redirected towards softer targets: Vulnerable minorities. salon.com/2023/03/30/ral…
Why to read this 2-3 minute analysis past the headline: I cover the a record-setting rise in hate crimes since January 6. I tie recent anti-LGBTQ hate speech from Tucker Carlson and Marjorie Taylor Greene to the surge in anti-queer violence.
"All the anger and vitriol that is fueling the MAGA movement has been redirected away from the mythical 'deep state' and towards softer targets like members of minority communities."
Also covered: How the devotion of online sleuths of the #resistance led to over 1,000 arrests of J6 insurrectionists. Which has scared MAGA and made them more unlikely to attack government institutions.
Morning! We don't know what the (30!) indictments are yet, so take a short break to read about the GOP's strategy for destroying public schools: Empowering the dumbest parent at any given school to have veto power over curricula.
Why to read past headlines to absorb this 2 minute article: Many recent censorship scandals have one thing in common: Only one parent objected to Ruby Bridges, The David, etc.
But GOP legislation will make it easier for that one crap parent to do this.
The GOP bill is "designed to arm that one busybody who has more time than sense to endlessly complain about everything, making it impossible for the school to teach even basic lessons to the students."
What I don't get is the lack of self-awareness. Surely Bragg had to have known he'd never have the guts. So why spin everyone up and then punt? Does he tell himself he will do it, but you know, just not today? Is he deluding himself?
Ever have that friend who really needs to break up with someone, but they keep finding excuses not to do it? They keep waiting for some "perfect" moment that they can dump someone without that person being angry or sad. And you want to shake them and say, there is no such day.
Morning! Today's piece connects the "nothing we can do" dodges from Republicans after the Nashville shooting with Trump's apocalyptic rhetoric in Waco. (And Fox's "cities burning" lies.)
Why it's worth 2 minutes to read past the headline: I analyze how the GOP message of hopelessness supports Trump's "burn it all down" campaign message. I connect the dots to the "America is a hellscape" tone of Fox News coverage.
Trump's entire career has been about fakery: He faked being a successful businessman. He thought presidenting was about photo ops.
January 6 made him think he 's now Koresh-style leader of a suicidal cult. As usual, he's not what he pretends to be. salon.com/2023/03/28/don…
Reasons to read this 2 minute article instead of arguing about its headline in mentions: I explain my logic! That's what "articles" are for.
Jokes aside: Trump is invoking Koresh. But he's frustrated that he isn't getting Koresh-style results. salon.com/2023/03/28/don…
"After Trump's Waco speech, there should be no room for any lingering doubt as to whether Trump is leaning into his identity as a self-created cult leader in his own right."
Trump's "strategy" appears to by trying to make his hypothetical indictment a symbol for the racist resentments of his audience. Making Bragg a stand-in for every Black person MAGA hates for having access to opportunities they didn't back in the 50s. salon.com/2023/03/25/ted…
Not entirely sure it will work. It's not just illogical but, emotionally, a tough sell. How is "I'm being investigated for illegal hush money" translate into "and this is just like your rage at having to compete with Black people for good jobs."
Important context to Trump's violent rhetoric: It's backed up by Tucker Carlson repeatedly fantasizing out loud about "race war".
Democrats need to start talking up the Michigan miracle. Because Whitmer's party is providing a real roadmap towards saving this country. She's not falling into all the traps Democrats often fall into. salon.com/2023/03/25/mic…
Democrats have this habit of getting elected and then getting scared of their own shadow, too afraid of backlash to pass meaningful legislation. That demoralizes Democratic voters, who start to believe elections don't matter.
That means that Republicans are overrepresented in people who show up to the polls. And they vote their racist and sexist resentments. But a small number of them can, as we've seen, be induced to sit out elections if they fear Republicans will take their beniefts away.
