April 6th, 2023: @Twitter has been randomly shutting down API access for many apps and sadly we were affected today too. Hopefully we will be restored soon! We appreciate your patience until then.
The most glaring 👀of them are the deletions pertaining to Mahatma Gandhi's assassination
DELETED 👉: Ban imposed on the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) by the union govt after Gandhi's death dropped from Class Political Science textbook
(see pic for deleted sentences)
(2/n)
EXHIBIT B:
Sentences on how Gandhi's steadfast pursuit of Hindu-Muslim unity provoked Hindu extremists have been removed from the Class 12 Political Science textbook
(see highlighted sentences in photo)
(3/n)
This is what the old and re-printed version of the pages look like 👇
(Source: Class 12 textbook 'Politics in India since Independence)
(4/n)
Wait, there are MORE deletions pertaining to Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse.
In the Class 12 History textbook titled ‘Themes In Indian History Part III’, NCERT has dropped a “Brahmin” reference to #Godse and that he was “the editor of an extremist Hindu newspaper”.
(5/n)
ANOTHER reference to the Gujarat riots deleted 👇
DROPPED: A paragraph from Class 11 Sociology book that talks about how class, religion & ethnicities lead to segregation of residential areas & cites 2002 Gujarat riots to illustrate how communal violence furthers ghettoisation
With the removal of the above paragraph 👆, NCERT has purged all references to Gujarat riots from its textbooks!
The above was the only surviving reference to the 2002 riots in NCERT textbooks.
(7/n)
The Council had earlier announced deletion of two references to the Gujarat riots from the Class 12 political science textbook ‘Politics in India Since Independence & the Class 12 sociology textbook ‘Indian Society’
The above (hush-hush) deletions are among the most sweeping changes in school textbooks since the NDA government came to power in 2014.
(9/n)
These are in addition to the ones OFFICIALLY announced by the NCERT last year. You can find details on ALL deletions in the NCERT social science textbooks in our three-part investigation from June 2022.
Not sure why everyone is suddenly outraging over deletions pertaining to Mughal rulers from NCERT textbooks that happened a year ago! 🥴
Anyhoo, using this opportunity to re-plug our investigation from June 2022 detailing ALL deletions from NCERT's social science textbooks
(1/4)
The 1st part of the series focused on changes made (in NCERT textbooks) to content related to contemporary India The most significant of them was deletion of references to the Gujarat riots.
Remember the Institutions of Eminence (IOE) scheme & the political firestorm over Jio Institute's selection?
5 yrs on, @IndianExpress decided to check on Modi govt's promise of autonomy & global standards for 20 institutions of higher learning.
Here's what we found:
🧵 (1/n)
We investigated official records, visited IOE campuses across country & interviewed university personnel & govt officials to find a sharp divide between public & private institutions selected for the 'eminence' status — and a❓mark on the future of the IOE scheme itself
(2/n)
Clearly, money promised under IOE scheme has made a difference, but the assurances of autonomy & cutting red tape largely remain on paper.
The latter assumes significance as Modi govt is now making similar commitments on autonomy to foreign univs to attract them to India
The govt is currently drafting a new curriculum doc (aka National School Curriculum or NCF). The exercise is being led by a 12-member panel headed by former ISRO head K Kasturirangan
The new NCF will be the FOUNDATION for new NCERT textbooks.
(2/n)
The Kasturirangan committee is being assisted by 25 focus groups constituted along different themes (eg: environment edu, arts edu etc.)
In other words, the inputs of these 25 focus groups will feed into the larger NCF document.
The ruling establishment's view that our history glorifies invaders at the cost of other kings has found an echo in how school textbooks have been reworked.
In the penultimate part of the investigation, @IndianExpress takes you through the deletions related to Muslim rulers.
We found that most of such changes have been made in ONE textbook. Before we jump into that, there's something we'd like you to show you.. (contd)
(2/n)
... the NCERT, curiously, replaced a table on changes in the Class 7 history with a new one (on its website) this week.
The new table doesn't reflect at least three deletions pertaining to Islamic rulers in the Class 7 history textbook ‘Our Past – II’.

So what are these changes that the NCERT removed from its website? 🤔
First, a reference to Mahmud Ghazni of Afghanistan (in Chapter 2), who invaded the subcontinent & raided the Somnath temple, has been tweaked. The title “Sultan” has been dropped from his name...
(4/n)
DELETED: "A Dalit is likely to be confined to.. scavenging..."
"..women & shudras not allowed to study Vedas"
The 2nd part of our investigation on the revised school textbooks 📚 focuses on the key deletions on caste, discrimination & minorities
🧵 (1/n) indianexpress.com/article/expres…
.@IndianExpress scrutinised 21 history, pol science & sociology textbooks for Classes 6 to 12 to find that deletions included several examples of discrimination faced by lower castes & minorities, which were introduced in 2007 to “build a sense of a just society”.
(2/n)
For instance, the section on 'varnas' in the Class 6 history textbook is reduced by HALF.
Sentences on the hereditary nature of varnas, & rejection of the varna system have been removed.
