I've riled people with this take before but, I'll state my case again. I sincerely believe Biden should publicly declare that he will pardon Trump should he be convicted of any of the crimes with which he's been charged or is under investigation. With one condition. #TrumpArrest
That condition is that Trump must admit his guilt - on that for which he will have already been found guilty. Don't demand that he forfeit his run for office. Just ask that he admit his crimes - and avoid jail. It's an approach that solves a huge number of challenges #TrumpArrest
First, it strips Trump of his most potent political asset: victimhood. Already, he's shot far ahead of Desantis in GOP polls as partisans rally behind him to denounce the 'witch hunt' by political enemies who are 'weaponizing' the legal system to halt his re-elxn. #TrumpArrest
It's all bullshit, of course. But it's powerful and toxic. It's propping up his candidacy, corroding trust in the institutions of justice and, yet again, dividing America. Don't let him do it. Take the sword out of his hand. #TrumpArrest
By offering the pardon, Trump is robbed of the suggestion his enemies are trying to undermine his candidacy. Or, at the very least, the power of that argument is diluted. Suddenly, he's not being victimized. He's being given a Get Out of Jail Free card. Literally. #TrumpArrest
In this way, it also blunts some of the heat and division that will quickly start to slice apart American society. The imagined motivations of jailing Trump or ending his campaign will be greatly denuded. And it reverses the onus onto Trump - he'll make the choice. #TrumpArrest
On that front, it might be a tougher decision for Trump than we might guess. He'll want to reject the offer as a stunt and declare that he'll never admit guilt. But that undermines his forward ability to argue he's been unjustly targeted. He loses his best argument #TrumpArrest
Also, Trump is a coward. He fears jail. Most likely, he would take the pardon, accept the terms and then argue that his admission of guilt means nothing because he said what he had to say. He might even argue that he 'gamed' Biden by taking his pardon. #TrumpArrest
But I don't think that scenario plays out well for Trump. He can howl but he would be left looking emasculated and weak. Forced to take Biden's charity. Fear of appearing to need the pardon will surely drive him to bark even louder and look even more pathetic. #TrumpArrest
Maybe that will erode his position with GOP primary voters. Probably not. But he'll be diminished. Because if nothing else, it removes his victim narrative. And it definitely will deepen his un-electability in a general. Helping ensure he can't take back the WH #TrumpArrest
Finally, it helps to avoid a genuine constitutional crisis. Trump cannot be seen to operate above the law. But jailing a President will strain the system, divide the country and worsen its already diseased politics. An offer of a pardon medicates those ills #TrumpArrest
Many people will hate this idea. They want Trump to pay the consequences - to watch him squirm and shuffle in leg chains. Me too. But in a world of shit choices, this shit choice offers the best possible set of outcomes. #TrumpArrest

I've had some pushback for slamming this idea that Tory should withdraw his resignation: 'Gee, I thought you liked the Mayor'. Yes, I do like John Tory. That's why I oppose this cancerous idea. IMO, no friend, no one with John's best interests at heart could support the notion
In fact, I'd argue that those whispering into his ear that he should renege his resignation range from the politically inept to the selfishly malignant. There's a reason(s) he resigned last Friday. It came after careful thought and thorough consideration of the alternatives.
Despite what some might now think, none of the considerations previously weighed have shifted measurably. Do many voters think he could or should stay on? Sure. But how many would support him if he actually attempted to do so? Don't bet heavily on that number holding up

It escapes me how any rational observer could conclude this past week was anything but a thorough success for the government. Not in the sense of 'we won'. No one wins. But the immense jeopardy that each minister, the PM and the PMO faced was averted entirely. #POEC
Trudeau faced a grueling test today. Hours of televised, public testimony on technical, difficult and extremely important issues. And he provided controlled, compelling & in-depth explanations of his every move and consideration. He didn't take a single punch. #POEC
It will fall to the Commissioner to determine if the statutory obligations of the EA were met. Or whether they need amendment. Or whether protocols governing interaction between leaders and policing services need revisiting. Much less interactions between levels of gov't #POEC

For Trudeau there are three keys to a successful outing today. First: Be Prepared. I assume this is a given. His Ministers and staff have appeared very ready. But remember the atypicality of this setting. Only the 3rd time in history a PM has appeared at a judicial inquiry. #POEC
A PM is never subjected to the marathon of four straight hours of questioning. When any sentence can be your undoing. Requires huge concentration. And it's a lot harder to steal large chunks of time for prep from the PMs sked than a Minister's. #POEC
Second: Be Deliberate. PMJT does not have the option of not making news today. So he needs to be deliberate and go in having made choices about where and how he wants to make news. Carry in your own clip. Of your choosing. Make it brightly coloured and everything else grey #POEC

As PMJT appears today before Rouleau - only the third time in history a PM has testified under oath at a judicial inquiry (I happened to be around for the last one) - I think there's been something notable about the testimony from Ministers this week. Something overlooked.
#POEC
A few other things, before coming to that. First, to varying degrees, I would say the Ministers have acquitted themselves well this week. No one has blown up. No one has become a raging news story. No one has broken down under questioning like a bad ep of Law & Order. #POEC
Second, they've all made a shift in tone that was necessary: They're owning the decision to invoke the EA. So much of the gov'ts early trouble in messaging around this subject was their apparent reluctance to accept responsibility for the decision - i.e. the cops wanted it #POEC

The mistaken assumption that the @TorontoStar and so many others are making right now is that Poilievre isn't already serious. Or that he's just posing, fishing for votes and he will, at some point, pivot/dilute/moderate his arguments and positions. This is assumed because...
It is typical. But PP is atypical. He is a proudful, deliberate, explicit departure from convention. He and his people roasted O'Toole for campaigning as one thing and then becoming another. PP will NOT do that. AND he doesn't believe he needs to in order to win the country
They believe the well of anger, antipathy and grievance toward elites who direct our institutions is deeper than the TO Star Ed Board or all us pundits and salon talkers realize. They believe a coalition can be built on the broad back of that fury. And dammit, they might be right

I see people saying the #CPC has shown how divided it's become and now we'll witness a rollicking battle for the soul of the party. That's not how I see it. That battle is over and won. I think Conservatives know exactly who they are and what they stand for. #cdnpoli
The #CPC will be a dedicated populist movement, harder-edged, more accommodating of online demagoguery, misinformation and feeding people's grievances back at them. They'll talk about the Harper coalition but it owes a lot more to the modern GOP - the DeSantises of the world #CPC
This party will not permit itself to be defined as hard-right or SoCon - but it will be much less uncomfortable with and far more inviting of those elements. They won't front-window them but they won't shame them either and they'll be quick to defend them. #CPC
