In the period 1948-1990, the CIA created paramilitary groups in #NATO countries that perpetrated terrorist attacks against their own population, and were subsequently blamed on leftists/communists.

These organizations were created, funded and trained by the CIA as part of #OperationGladio. The terrorist attacks were ordered planned and executed at the behest of the Agency and was part of a "Strategy of Tension".
These secret armies operated in the following countries:

The French Gladio contingent did everything in their power to avert Algerian independence, including assassinations of Algerians to sabotage the peace process, assassination of the Mayor of Evian and even an attempt against Charles de Gaulle.

In Franco's Spain, the dirty job was done primarily by Italian Gladio members who fled Italy after the 1970 failed Borghese coup. Their MO was assassinations of anti-fascists.

The most notorious right-wing assassin, whom Google calls "Italian political activist", was Delle Chiaie, who was used by the CIA to kill communists in Italy, Spain, Chile, Bolivia. He was most likely behind the 1980 Bologna bombing that killed 85.

In Portugal the Gladio army was called "Aginter Press", and was organized by 2 CIA assets, the 🇫🇷 Guerin Serac and 🇮🇹 Delle Chiaie. The strategy was clear:
Assassinations and massacres had to be blamed on the left, so that fascist governments were seen as the solution.

Portuguese stay-behind army called Aginter Press was involved in terrorist attacks in Portugal, Italy, the Portuguese colonies, but also in Latin America. All with the coordination of the CIA.

In 1984, in the Belgian city of #Vielsalm, the #NATO stay-behind army alongside their US Special Forces terrorist counterparts launched an attack on the local police station, killed one person and stole multiple weapons. The attack was blamed of course on the "communists".

The attack on #Vielsalm was one of many. The end game? Showing the inadequacy of the Belgian security forces, and giving the impression of an impending Red revolution. Planting weapons on left wing terror groups, which most likely were also a front, was part of their tactics

The most infamous of those attacks were most likely the #Brabant massacres that took place in the mid 80s and led to the death of 28 people. No one has ever been prosecuted for these terror attacks, but all point to the #NATO stay-behind Belgian army.

The star of the show was none other than Klaus Barbie, a certified war criminal who was saved by the CIA. First he created the German stay-behind army and then moved to Latin America where he organized death squads in countries like Bolivia and Peru.

And of course, no self-respecting Nazi organization exists without a list of people that are to be liquidated when the going gets tough.

The strategy of tension wasn't only used in Italy, but in Germany as well. #Gladio stay-behind operatives in Germany perpetrated the same type of terrorist attacks, like the 1980 Oktoberfest massacre in Munich that killed 13 people.
