People keep saying they don’t know why others aren’t wearing masks, but I do.
Neurotypical brains are designed to think about the short term. They might care about the pandemic for a while, but they physically can’t keep doing it. 🧵
Autistic brains are designed to care. We can’t help but care. Even though we might be lonely and depressed and desperately want to socialize, we see the bigger picture over our own needs.
Neurotypical brains are designed to prioritize their own needs. That’s why so many of them are in denial about the pandemic in order to function. They need to perform socialization.
For neurotypicals it’s not about getting information from others like with autistics. It’s about performing socialization. That’s why they keep going to restaurants in a pandemic despite the news.

As someone who’s been chronically ill for 10 years, let me give you some advice if you have long Covid.
Everybody will tell you that it’s your fault; that you just need to eat better and exercise more and try this and do that.
None of it will cure you.
Of course eating healthy and getting exercise and generally taking care of yourself is good. Don’t stop taking care of yourself.
But don’t expect it to cure you, because no matter how many people tell you that it will, I promise you it won’t.
I was one of those people who thought it would. I drank the koolaid and watched all the vlogs. I wrote articles about how healthy living was making me better.
It wasn’t. I’m just as sick 10 years later. I feel better when I take care of myself but it’s not a cure me.
