On the auspicious occasion of #narasimhajayanti let's look at how Narasimha opens and closes the Vishnu Sahasranama. #thread Image
He is the first Avatara to be mentioned by name, appearing right in the 3rd verse.

Sreeman Narasimha, the one from whom Lakshmi never leaves. Image
He appears around the middle in Verse 52 as

He is the Mahesvara who appeared as the Lion. Image
Narasimha also appears the last naama.

Sarva Praharanaayudha. The one who can wield anything as a weapon (to protect those devoted to Him).

Now, how does this refer to Narasimha?
After all, one may argue that being Sarva Praharanaayudha is a common attribute of all Avataras.

Indeed, Rama picks up a darbha grass to launch at Jayanta disguised as a crow. Image
And Krishna, after vowing to not take up weapons during the Kurukshetra war, nevertheless picks up a wheel to attack Bheeshma. Image
But you see, both Rama and Krishna had to *pick up* something to use as a weapon.

It is Narasimha who uses his own nails as a weapon against Hiranyakasipu.

Thus, Narasimha is Sarva Praharanaayudha. Image
It is this act that Rama refers to, when Sugreeva and others hesitate to accept Vibheeshana, fearing that he may cause harm to Rama.
Rama asks Sugreeva not to worry, and says

All the Pisachas, Danavas, Yakshas, &Rakshasaas living on the earth, if I wish, I can eliminate them with just the tip of my finger
Narasimha as Sarva Praharanaayudha, does not waste even a moment to pick up a weapon to protect His devotees.

May He protect us always!

Reminds me of the case of the Pathur Nataraja, a Moorti that was smuggled out of India in 1976.

The venerable R Nagaswamy's testimony in a British court in 1986 played a major role in the case.

The testimony involved soil. How?

#Thread
Before we move ahead, this is the Pathur Nataraja.
Look at the magnificence of the Moorti and the Mandahasa playing on His lips. Image
The Indian side claimed that the Nataraja moorti had been buried in the soil at a particular place and when found, was smuggled out.

The Moorti still had soil sticking to it. +

What are your thoughts when you see these 3 images in the tweet by @vedant_bangad?

Writing mine into a #thread.

The common theme among these 3 is that they all portray Nagas/Snakes.
Counter-clockwise
a. Kaliya
b. Sesha &
c. Vasuki during the Samudra Manthan. Image
a. The story of Kaliya is from the Bhagavata Purana and well-known.

He is driven away from his home in the island of Ramanaka.

By Garuda.

This is important because Garuda and his family play a role in the story of the other 2 Nagas as well.

So, what does Kaliya do?
Kaliya exits Ramanaka island and comes to live in Vrindavana, where Garuda cannot enter because of a curse.

But Kaliya does not stay idle.

Driven away from his home, his Ahamkaara needs an outlet.

So, what does he do? Image

Not even getting into Panini.

If literacy came thanks to Ashoka, how is it that Kautilya, who served Ashoka's grandfather, wrote a full chapter on how to *write* royal writs (Sasanas)?

Thanks to @devduttmyth, a short #thread on the chapter on writing Sasanas from Arthasastra. Image
Kautilya begins the chapter by saying that the term Sasana is to be used only for royal writs.

Right at the outset, he stresses on the importance of Sasanas, that they are as important as treaties (Sandhi) and can lead to peace and war.
So, someone who is as qualified as a Minister(Amatya Sampadopetah)

He needs to:
know all customs
be good at composing(Sugrantha)
have good handwriting (Charvaksharo)
smart in reading (Lekha Vachana Samartha)

If there was no literacy, where would reading and writing come from?

Pic 1: The Jivatma abandons the mirage of being Svatantra, realises its nature as the Paratantra Tatva, and seeks refuge in Bhagavat Paratantreeya.

The Jivatma attains the Bhagavat Seshatva Jnana. +
Pic 2: Having attained the Seshatva Jnana of Bhagavat Paratantreeya, Jivatma seeks the blessing of serving Paramatma, i.e. Bhagavat Kainkarya.

In the process, Jivatma realises that Bhagavat Nama can make even stones float.

Thus, not only the Jivatma, but also Prakriti is subject to Bhagavat Paratantreeya.

After all, as the Kathopanishad says,

In continuation with this thread on how Narasimha Svami appears in the beginning, middle and ending of the Vishnu Sahasranama,

Narasimha has a penchant for appearing in the least expected of places, especially to protect a Bhakta.

#Thread
After all, He appeared out of a simple pillar, just to prove the statement of His Bhakta.

to establish as truth, the statement of Bhakta Prahlada, Narasimha emerged out of a pillar.
Painting: @keshav61 Image
@longhandnotes @keshav61 He emerged in a dark cave, to bless Yada, who had performed Tapasya.

This is where we have the Yadadri Temple now. Image

There are two temples in Trichy, very close to each other, where Siva has performed the protective role of the mother.

The 1st temple is better known, with a less known Sthala Purana, while the converse is true for the 2nd one. #MothersDay #Thread
We begin our thread at the foot of the Rockfort temple, which houses, Manikka Vinayakar at the base and Ucchi Pillaiyar at the top.

In the middle, is a temple to Siva, worshipped as Thaayumaanavar or Maatru Bhootesvara - He who came as the mother. Image
In the Trichy of yore, called Tiruchhirappalli, lived a wealthy merchant, appropriately named Dhana kutthan.

His wife was Ratnavati, a gem of a devotee of Lord Siva.

When our story begins, Ratnavati is pregnant... very pregnant.

Unfortunately, Dhanakutthan is not in town.
