One piece of advice from an expert UX Writer to a beginner writer? Please don't niche down too early; stop overthinking it; just write! Why should you listen to me?

Well, I'm Kat, a proud generalized specialist ( what I call the T - SHAPED WRITER ). I'm a UX writer on Toptal's Image
core team. Before that, I had written remotely for international and local brands. But it wasn't always that way. I had worked in a content mill before, where I wrote for 1 naira per word, which is less than a dollar ( way cheaper than a writer's lifeblood - coffee). I have also
written in many verticals: finance, real estate, gardening, automobiles, health, relationships, business, gaming, you name it. I've also held several titles: staff content writer, content developer, copywriter, SEO copywriter, UX writer, content designer, product writer, etc. But
what mattered the most was that in every room I entered, I was the person who cared enough about the words on the interface. As Kristina H, author of content strategy for the web, said, "It doesn’t matter what you call it or who does it" as long as the content gets done! Often,
I see newbie writers paralyzed about where and how to niche. And I wish I could hold each one of them by the hand, but that's not possible. I'm not saying be "everywhere." I'm saying to be a generalist with a strategy. Like I advised @FinTech_Sis, writing community
during their event titled "Climbing the Career Ladder as a Writer," where I was honored to be a speaker. I told them to treat their content career as a T-shaped tree, and a lot of them shared how that analogy stuck
with them. You can view their feedback here docs.google.com/presentation/d… .

Being a generalized specialist would pay you back in cash,
portfolio samples, or experience. It's never a waste, especially if you wish to be an all-around content designer in the future.

I'm a believer, and this is my truth and advice to beginners. I would never mislead you. Trust me.

The secret tool I'm about to share with you is paid info that costs a couple of $$$; in fact, I learned about it after losing a few myself, but I'm giving it out for free because it might just be what ONE writer needs to be steps ahead of AI. If that's you, keep reading.
You see, I'm a firm believer that all writers should be storytellers! It doesn't matter if you're in UX, SEO, editorial, or whatnot; if you want to beat the bots, you ought to be human enough to be relatable, and one way to be relatable is to tell stories. Stories,
whether factual or fictional, are an intrinsic human factor passed down to us from generation to generation, from gathering around campfires and telling "tales by moonlight" to viewing cave drawings to narrating oral and reading written

One of the questions I get is how I got into UX writing. Well, this portfolio feedback makes me recall how all my content experiences led to my journey as a UX writer, and it wasn't a linear journey. Years ago, I realized that while my title was SEO copywriter, my
passion was to help people find what they were looking for on search seamlessly (user experience). So I would frown at blackhat SEO techniques and convince stakeholders that understanding search intent and writing for humans with a good site IA was the
way, and combined with other technical SEO efforts, we would see tangible results on Google.

It was hard work but absolutely worth it. When I eventually niched down to uxwriting, I realized how easy it was for me to empathize with users. My years of advocating for

89% of consumers research online before purchasing, and 88% say they won't return to a site after a bad experience, yet very few #websites successfully meet users' expectations.

Here are 4 tips to ensure your #UXcopy meets users' needs for a smooth experience & conversion.

1. Develop a Content Strategy:

A content strategy helps you align your goal as a business with your audience's expectations through content. Think of it as the vehicle that helps convey the right content, to the right people, in the right place, at the right time.

2. Draw a
customer journey map:

As a business, your goals (perspective) and users aren't the same. Where you're trying to attract a person, the person is investigating and comparing options. So a journey map puts you in their shoes and helps you predict their expectations per time.

UX writers, or writers transitioning to UX writing, you want to read this for subsequent works and portfolio projects.

A 🧵
As UX writers, we know the importance of having a framework. Now what’s better than a framework? A user centered framework. And that’s what I’ll be discussing.
Earlier this month I shared that I’ll be starting UI/UX classes @CoLab_kd and UX writers like @Iam_Btoye were interested in my class summaries. So let’s call this crash class 101.
