Proud Boys partial verdict in and it is a triumph for US democracy (and for DOJ) - Proud Boys leaders guilty of seditious conspiracy. Jury is deadlocked on the lower-level Pezzola still, which is reasonable. But the leaders are GUILTY. 1/
GUILTY: Enrique Tarrio, protege of Roger Stone, Chairman of the America's brownshirts the Proud Boys, who knew an attack was being planned 2 days before Trump announced it and thought he could skate free by skipping the action. But he failed. 2/
Now the next stage - negotiating before sentencing. Proud Boys leaders Tarrio and Biggs, proteges of Roger Stone and Alex Jones, were acting on orders. Now they have reason to talk.
Biggs incited the breach of the Capitol with an InfoWars megaphone. He can implicate Alex. 3/
History gives us lessons: if shadowy provocateurs sack your Capitol, they must be prosecuted. Imagine how different Germany's history would be if the Nazis who burnt their own Capitol in 1933 to create chaos had been duly convicted & sentenced to jail. 4/
If the Jan 6 attack had succeeded, or if perpetrators went free to try again, US history would unfold differently. This verdict gives us hope of returning to normalcy.
The volunteer #SeditionHunters community was integral: they saw the need and rose to the occasion. And won. 5/
A note to media: you may not realize the extent of the volunteer work on the Proud Boys because much happened out of sight. People mobilized in force to help DOJ. Quietly, without the need for credit or clout. For democracy. 6/
To summarize, a verdict chart from NBC's Daniel Barnes. Guilty for all counts decided so far, other than some acquittals for the Count 9 related to Pezzola's making contact with an officer as he wrestled the riot shield away. 7/
Kudos to WaPo for adding key info in their story on the convicted Proud Boys leaders, noting ties to layers above - including calls to InfoWars staff on Jan 4, 5, and 6. Alex Jones will come up again. (Story by @hsu_spencer, Rachel Weiner, Tom Jackman). 8/ archive.is/ITurl

Today's arrest of a former FBI agent who entered the Capitol on Jan 6 is alarming, but luckily Jared Wise seems like a radicalized "normie": no strategic role in a larger plan. An angry, deluded middle-aged man who shouted for attackers to kill police - like much of the mob. 1/
Wise should have known better but didn't hide his identity. Carried his own phone, which pinged off the Capitol network. Entered the Capitol 10 minutes after the first breach, cheered, left again. He was a tool: angry men like him made up the mob. 2/ storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.usco…
Wise shows no situational awareness of events around him - unlike Proud Boy Zach Rehl who precisely reported the progress of the attack. It's terrible that Wise was there; we should ask how an FBI agent can be radicalized; but luckily on Jan 6 he seems just part of the crowd. 3/
Closing arguments are finally done in the Proud Boys trial, the jury about to deliberate - and Enrique Tarrio, who wouldn't testify under oath, is calling in to Twitter space from jail. Why? To influence the jury? To lay groundwork for the future? Because spinning is a reflex? 1/
If any of the journalists want to ask questions, here are some suggestions
* Tarrio: what did he know on Dec. 17 to make him start making excuses to skip Jan 6, before Trump had announced it?
* Tracy Beanz: why did she decide at the last minute to skip going to DC for Jan 6?
2/
* Tarrio: how were the Proud Boys communicating, to them all assembled in front of the NW Scaffolds BEFORE the break started there?
* Tarrio: what did he do between 2014, when he was first picked up by Roger Stone, and 2017, when he joins the Proud Boys? Did he work for Roger?

The defense for Proud Boy leader Enrique Tarrio is really leaning into his cozy relationship with Officer Lamond. How could Tarrio have planned crimes if he told police he'd be in DC? Because Tarrio's plan was to get himself arrested & let the other Proud Boys do the criming. 1/
Tarrio knew, and early. In the days before Trump's "will be wild" announcement, Tarrio called 2 reporters, announced 2x on social media, told Lamond: I'M GUILTY (of a misdemeanor) Then he carefully boosted it to a felony to get himself barred from DC. 2/
Tarrio's plan was to throw the Proud Boys under the bus. Let them do the crimes, risk a real arrest, while he would skate free or at most do a few months. He cultivated Lamond, expected favors would be done. (Even now - but Lamond refused to testify.) 3/
The Proud Boys closing arguments have started. Led by Conor Mulroe, who brings an emotional punch. The case is very strongm except for the hitch of motivation. Prosecutors' call: take the Proud Boys at their word, as true believers in the battle. It's really more complicated...1/
The conspiracy case has 5 defendants, whose motivations and even levels of knowledge differ. But that's complicated for a jury, and the shadowy high-level stuff is hard to prove. It's a reasonable tactic to lump them together. But a quick review here to remember the details. 2/
Tarrio & Biggs were players in dirty influence ops long before the Proud Boys were even created. Nordean is the 'poster boy' who pushed the antifa narrative & inspired recruits. Rehl seems a mid-level executor. Pezzola is the fall guy pulled in to do the dirty work on Jan 6. 3/
Tune in to the Proud Boys trial today for what should be a bloodbath of cross-examination of Zach Rehl as prosecutors get to ask him how it felt to watch violence like this: W Plaza, 1:16 PM when he can be SEEN watching it, along with Proud Boys leaders. (h/t @creek_twit) 1/
Rehl is not battling police here, but he's watching. Once the fight heated up, the Proud Boys leadership stood together under the Jericho Cross and watched. At 1:18 PM, as MPD was gaining ground, they consulted together, gesturing. Soon after this they pulled back further. 2/
Watch the whole video; it's still on You Tube - shot from the tower as the violence unfolds below. The Proud Boys leaders were already at the cross at 1:11 PM when Pezzola steals the riot shield; Rehl was filming it. Annotatd by @AlHunt08657198. 3/
Let's just put the picture out, ugly as it is. THIS is what's on display at he house of mega-donor Harlan Crow, who gave lavish presents to Justice Clarence Thomas. See thread and article describing the reactions of guests. Thomas visited this house often. Ask him about it. 1/
Here's the story by the Washingtonian. The Hitler stuff is not in a vault, it's on display in public areas, it's background decor. In 2 years of Jan 6 work I've seen more swastikas in the US than I imagined possible. They're at the donors' houses too. 2/ washingtonian.com/2023/04/07/cla…
In 2008, a reporter for Dallas News visited Crow's library and said the Nazi stuff was tucked away: "Hitler's placesettings and linens...discretely kept in a closed cabinet, so the swastikas are not on display." But now it seems it's all out there. 3/ web.archive.org/web/2022060600…
