It's #Eurovision week!

Yesterday the delegations arrived on the #TurquoiseCarpet, and tomorrow night the first semi-final will air around the world.

As promised, here's a thread about this year's acts. 🧵1/17
youtube.com/live/2M0DtRFx3…
The bookies have 🇸🇪Sweden as the favourite to win, followed by 🇫🇮Finland and 🇫🇷France.

But Sweden's odds have gotten worse since rehearsals started.

The singer, #Loreen, already won for 🇸🇪 in 2012 with Euphoria, a global hit hitting number one on the charts in 21 countries. Image
Among fans, I keep hearing "I predict Sweden will win but I don't want it to win". People like the song but think a 🇸🇪win is too predictable. 🇸🇪has dominated the contest for 2 decades.

If 🇸🇪win again they'll match Ireland's record for most wins - 7.
Number 2 - 🇫🇮Finland - is more of a fan favourite but it divides opinion.

This song is predicted to do well with public televote but not with the juries who determine up 50% of the score (as I wrote in previous thread, this may be the juries' last year)
🇫🇷France may win #Eurovision2023 with #Evidemment, my personal favorite. Bookies have it 3rd.

They've gone back to successful nouvelle chanson formula which put them 2nd two years ago with Voila.

But Zarra's reportedly had "diva-like" behavior backstage.
This is an unpredictable year and there are several dark horse possibilities.

🇳🇴Norway's "Queen of Kings" is a fan favourite with an *extremely* Eurovision sound (some would argue, painfully so).
🇦🇹Austria's "Who the Hell is Edgar" is also doing well with the bookies. People say it has a Billie Eilish sound.

I wasn't a big fan at first (the spoken opening put me off) but it's grown on me.
It is unlikely but possible 🇺🇦Ukraine could win #Eurovision again this year. Bookies have it 4th

It's a catchy song with coded references to 🇷🇺. But while the still-very-fresh invasion was top of mind last May, I don't think it'll drive televote this year
While Ukraine says stick our middle finger up at aggressors, 🇨🇭Switzerland's song this year has a different message. The lyrics are about as subtle as a brick.

"I don't wanna be a soldier, I don't wanna have to play with real blood". Bookies have it 14th.
🇪🇸Spain has a very interesting entry this year, quite different from last year's entry SloMo which came 3rd (by computer vote, 2nd by the actual vote).

It's similar to the Galician public favourite song that was runner-up in the national final last year.
This is a good opportunity to point out that yet again we've got a record number of non-English songs this year - by my count the highest since language freedom was introduced in 1999 (before then you had to sing in your national language).

12 of the 37 songs are not in English.
Now time for some honourable mentions. First of all, I am baffled as to why 🇮🇸Iceland and 🇩🇰Denmark aren't doing better with the bookies. (29th and 30th!)

I guess 🇮🇸live singing is weak. But the produced version is one of the best songs this year IMHO.
Maybe the 🇩🇰Danish song is just a little too slick for Eurovision. It sounds like something you could turn on the radio and hear Justin Bieber singing.

Again, I'd say the produced version is maybe the best song this year. But it doesn't build.
The 🇨🇿Czechia song is one of my personal favourites but nobody else seems to like it ☹️ (bookies have it 12th)
The 🇬🇧UK song this year is also very good. It shows the Brits seem to finally understand what a Eurovision song is, after two decades of misfiring.

Sam Ryder's amazing song last year seems to have awakened a new era for UK songs. 🇮🇪Ireland, take note.
BTW, I also quite like this year's 🇲🇩Moldova song, but I'm baffled why they would choose this 🇬🇧year to do a serious song instead of their normal camp.

Moldova is usually reliable for the delivering the (ever-dwindling) camp that British audiences love.
The first semi-final will be tomorrow at 9pm CET (8pm GMT).

🇮🇪Ireland (in a fight with JK Rowling for some reason), 🇵🇹Portugal, 🇱🇻Latvia, 🇦🇿Azerbaijan, and 🇷🇸Serbia look likely to be knocked out. 🧵17/17

Tonight is the first semi-final for #Eurovision2023 in 🇬🇧Liverpool.

It's happening on the 25th anniversary of the 1998 contest hosted in 🇬🇧Birmingham, a transformative year that marks the boundary between the 'old' and 'new' Eurovision.
In 1998 Dana International became the first trans (and 1st openly LGBT) person to win the ESC.

Following the '98 contest it was decided to make two major rule changes: countries no longer had to sing in their national language and they weren't required to use an orchestra.
Those changes transformed what had become a stale archaic-looking contest in '90s into the explosion of spectacle in 2000s - helped also by the entry of enthusiastic Eastern European countries unable to participate during Communism.

Birmingham was the last show of the old guard.

As the 🇬🇧#Coronation takes place in London, here's some fun facts about monarchies around the world.

I find Americans have the mistaken impression that Europe has many monarchies. In fact, excluding microstates, there are just 8 - and only 3 have been there more than 200 years. Image
There are actually more monarchies in Asia than in Europe.

The world has 16 kings, and only one queen (🇩🇰). Then there are 4 princes, 3 sultans, 2 emirs, 1 pope and 1 emperor (🇯🇵). Image
There are 4 types of monarchies remaining in Europe:

🇬🇧British
🇸🇪🇩🇰🇳🇴Scandinavian
🇳🇱🇧🇪🇱🇺Low Countries
🇪🇸Iberian
🇻🇦🇱🇮🇦🇩🇲🇨Microstates

This map shows when other European monarchies ended (most give the year of national independence from a imperial monarchy) Image

In 2 days, #Eurovision2023 week begins in Liverpool with delegations arriving on the #TurquoiseCarpet

Surely the most important thing happening in🇬🇧this weekend😉

I'll be there covering. Here's the mother of all threads on the most important things to know for this year. 🧵1/23 Image
The context: Despite what many think (Europeans' cultural cringe and all), #Eurovision is a big deal.

It's the most-watched annual live event in the world, with an average 200m viewers each year. That's more than the 🇺🇸Superbowl, Oscars & Grammys combined en.as.com/en/2022/03/14/…
Each year 40,000 visitors descend on the #Eurovision host city.

🇬🇧Liverpool is hosting this year. They've built a fan zone holding 15,000 people. There will be 9 shows over the week (televised: 2 semis & 1 final).

The 54,000 tickets sold out in an hour. citymonitor.ai/neighbourhoods…

It seems Salvini is jealously eyeing Meloni's centrist rebranding and he wants in on the action. She is also reportedly thinking to link with EPP.

Question: Is Europe's far-right becoming more centrist, or is Manfred Weber's #EPP becoming more far-right? euractiv.com/section/politi…
One thing is clear: whatever power Marine Le Pen previously had among the European far right has evaporated.

Far-right parties want to distance themselves from 🇫🇷#LePen, seeing her as a loser and 🇮🇹#Meloni as a winner.

Meloni has momentum on the European stage.
Meanwhile, the Tories’ decade-long romance of the EU’s far right is coming to a crescendo this month with the yearly Nat Con conference being hosted in London.

National Conservatism is a rebranding of the Trumpist far right designed to lure the center. nationalconservatism.org/natcon-uk-2023…

🇵🇱Poland, 🇸🇰Slovakia & 🇭🇺Hungary have banned #grain imports from 🇺🇦Ukraine, saying 🇪🇺EU's freeze of import tariffs to help get Ukraine grain around the world is flooding their markets and hurting their farmers.

But such unilateral trade actions cannot be taken nationally.
Despite these bans being a clear violation of EU law, the 🇪🇺Commission took a soft approach today and wouldn't even say what possible repercussions there could be.

Why? They likely don't want to become a pawn in Polish election politicking.
Poland's hard-right nationalist governing party PiS depends on the farmer and rural vote to maintain power - and there's an election later this year.

🇵🇱farmers have been protesting the Ukrainian grain influx (which has drastically lowered prices) and the Ag minister resigned.

Just in: EU national governments have just passed #CombustionEngineBan legislation.

Germany dropped its block on final adoption after being given a written guarantee from the Commission they will create a new category of ICE vehicles running only on #eFuel exempt from 2035 ban
Controversially, Germany has instructed the Commission to do this through a delegated act added into existing Euro6 type approval legislation - which could be forced through with no vote by the 🇪🇺Parliament or member states.

Expect already-angry MEPs to push back hard on this.
If a legal objection is successful against using a no-vote delegated act to do this politically sensitive thing, then 🇪🇺Commission will move to Plan B: revising the legislation (to Euro7).

That would need approval by 🇪🇺Parliament & 🇪🇺Council.
