In Matamoros, Reynosa & RGV, heard disturbing accounts from people seeking asylum and from humanitarian and faith workers/volunteers about horrific conditions & barriers to asylum.
Spoke to single women, men, and families without phones having been extorted and robbed countless times in their journey to the border, now unable to access life-saving asylum protection because the USG has made CBP One the ONLY path to asylum under new #asylumban
Heard multiple accounts of family separation by CBP, including numerous Haitian pregnant women separated from their husbands, 21-year-old CBP separated from family without providing any info, leaving them in fear whether she’s been expelled alone to highly dangerous parts in MX
In Matamoros spoke w/ a single mom w/ young child and w/ women talone who crossed to the US to seek asylum. CBP expelled them to Piedras Negras and Reynosa, 267 and 55 mi away, exposing them to life-threatening harm as they traversed highly dangerous border back to Matamoros.
Local actors confirm lateral expulsions aren’t new, but have increased and are happening across the border. The women expelled to Reynosa told me right upon exiting back in to MX, they “ran for their lives” as men attempted to abduct them. This isn’t isolated; it’s systemic.
This isn’t new. @humanrights1st tracked at least 13,480 reports of murder, torture, kidnapping, rape, and other violent attacks on migrants and asylum seekers blocked in or expelled to Mexico under Title 42 under first 2 years of President Biden administration.
