5 + 1 Underrated Things Content Websites Should Consider:

1. Custom images
2. Newsletter
3. A decent design just for branding
4. Internal Linking (in the body)
5. Informative About Us page
6. ???

Let's see how and why 🧵
Custom images are necessary to differentiate yourself and steal some spots for Images.

This is even more pressing in niches such as travel.

Canva is often enough unless you want to do professional infographics.
The reason why I recommend infographics is because they are easy to share.

This implies you could get some nice backlinks and more og content for your articles.

Don't underestimate the impact of images.
A newsletter is where you want your users to stay.

Some may get to your website only once so a newsletter may help you retain some.

Recently, I am studying email marketing because it's quite profitable.

Include email marketing when you can, it's a big plus!
A decent design goes a long way.

You just need a good color palette and some visual features to stand out.

Then, you can improve your design as you go.

This is a very underrated area in niche websites because many influencers say it's secondary.
They are technically correct but do you care about user retention?

The answer should always be yes.

People prefer Reddit and hate excessive SEO because of these people.

If you want to own a good website, design is part of your branding.
The most profitable content websites I have audited have a good design or unique features.

As an alternative, you can create a content farm for money and give people a terrible UX.

It's up to your ethics but don't expect any mercy.
Internal Linking is once again the most important thing you have control over.

This is preemptive meaning that you decide internal links before writing.

We can say it's part of planning.

The issue is that many still do it wrong (for some reason).
Linking from the widgets, footer or any other repeated block, adds way less value.

You should do it from the main body, so naturally within your text.

And yes, that's exactly why you plan it in advance (to some extent).
Choosing the right anchor text shouldn't be overthought as you can be quite aggressive.

Use 2-3 variations at most and you are fine.

This is also something you can plan in advance (main keywords).
The informative About Us page is simply for trust.

I won't even mention EEAT because it's pure common sense.

That's one of the first things I check when I don't know a website.

I get very frustrated when I don't see it...
You can be pretty creative there and highlight your value proposition.

I also recommend describing your authors or telling some funny facts about them.

As you see, this isn't only about #SEO.
As you may have noticed from this thread, the SEO industry often emphasizes rankings.

And that's good but I should also be able to use the website.

This helps with retention and eventually, conversions.
Dulcis in fundo, we have...

Yes, using data.

No one really does and I can understand why for small websites.

Simple solutions can help you and you don't need to look further.
For bigger websites, it's unthinkable to use the same processes.

You should look for tailored solutions and consider investing.

The simple "write more content" doesn't work anymore.

This is where you need actual strategic direction and to use data.
A big part of the industry isn't ready yet, simply because we don't promote it enough.

CWV and moving to Headless won't give you money.

Actually using data, developing solid systems and scaling production will do.
As usual, I like to measure the ROI.

It can also come in the form of time saved.

This is something I usually preach because time is actually money.

And you can actually measure and 100% optimize it compared to "rankings".
If you create a solid process for scaling content, it largely depends on you.

I don't see many external factors.

With rankings, we know we are affected by Google.

You should safeguard yourself if possible.
Solid systems will give you the edge.

You can learn everything but execution remains the only thing that matters.

Writing more content is the action, not your ultimate goal!

Websites of any kind should leverage:

👉 BigQuery
👉 Search Console API
👉 GA API
👉Tag Manager
👉 Any non-SEO data they can gather

Decision-making becomes so simple once you actually have good data.

Let's see how 🧵
BigQuery is not the only option but allows you to store data easily and stay within Google's ecosystem.

This is great news for integration with Google APIs and also for learning.

A lot of SEOs talk about BQ, so it's way easier for you!
BigQuery is one of the tidiest ways to store your data for SEO projects.

The storage costs tend to be quite low, the same I can't say for querying.

That's why knowing concepts such as clustering and partitioning can help you.

N.B. That's more engineering, you don't need them.

The 10 Most Common Errors in Content Audits.

Many can fall for cheap #SEO advice and get nothing.

I've audited small and large content websites to develop profitable processes.

This thread is for you 🧵
1. Only using one data source to delete articles.

If your website is using multiple channels, you should have other data than GSC.

Wait if one article has 0 clicks but high engagement on Facebook?

Guru advice says to delete it, I would never do that.
2. Using Google Analytics as your bible.

The average GA user looks at sessions or users that are hard to convert into actions.

I'd rather check Search Console first and get the unique query count.

Thinking in terms of queries is an additional step that will save you later.

Evergreen content is one of my favorite #SEO topics.

It's super crucial for publishers and especially for niche websites.

And yet, there are many ideas you can use 🧵
Evergreen refers to content that is not time-sensitive and is not particularly subject to seasonality or timeframes.

Search demand is constant through the years. They usually tackle recurring problems or super generic topics.
This type of content makes it easy to apply some advanced principles, as you want them to last.

Having good authors, good syntax with proper entities, and clear internal linking is the bare minimum for me.

This is very simple once you know the niche very well.

The 10 Underrated Mistakes For Content Websites And Publishers 🧵
1. Not internalizing.

Yeah outsourcing is cool but some things you should have.

This includes internal tools, hiring people and learning new skills.

Outsourcing is a double-edged sword and can destroy your profitability.
2. Not embedding SEO into the company culture.

An organization that doesn't embrace SEO as part of what they do will have a hard time.

That's because SEO will be considered as homework and not as needed.

Many ask me where to start with coding/data or #Python for #SEO.

I've already covered this topic but...

understanding some concepts is still hard for many.

Let's see why and how 🧵
Excel/Google Sheets are completely fine for smaller projects.

Pivot tables and basic data cleaning operations do the work.

They are the best solutions for quick work and for fast formatting.
The problem is that what you do there can't be replicated easily.

Documented code solves that problem.

If you document everything and list everything, it will be much more useful.

Programming languages also help you to scale processes.

What's the actual impact of tools on #SEO work?

Many claim that *some* tools are mandatory to execute a strategy.

I think this is often misleading.

Let's see how to differentiate between planning and execution 🧵
Cause-effect and correlation are different concepts that are often interchanged.

Testimonials and case studies can be tweaked to show a certain outcome.

You don't get rich because you used a keyword research tool.

This is one of the most common tricks used by sales teams.
Strategy involves planning and abstracting the steps, having an overview.

Tactics are the steps you take, what you do to execute a strategy.

Tools can be useful at both stages BUT...

You should never let a tool decide for you.

Strategy is what you normally don't delegate.
