We’re hearing evidence from Dan Evans, former Sunday Mirror journalist. He was previously convicted of phone hacking at News of the World.
In his witness statement he describes his ‘“Corporate Grooming” by MGN, in my twenties, into its world of unethical and illegal journalism’
Dan Evans says “Sometimes stories would come from a legitimate source... We would often "stand up" or develop the story by looking to hack the phones of the individuals involved, or their friends, so that we could verify the truth of the information given to us by the source.”
“On other occasions, we’d find out a piece of info from a voicemail message & we might well try & confirm it through other means. We would try & be careful not to use the info from a voicemail message if it was obvious this could be the source; we were trying to cover our tracks.
Former Mirror journalist Dan Evans claims lawyers at MGN knew about phone hacking. He says a senior lawyer once made an “in-joke” smiling and asking “have I got any messages this morning?”

It’s Day Two of Prince Harry v Mirror Group Newspapers and Barrister David Sherborne is continuing his opening #PrinceHarry
Prince Harry’s barrister says one of the “most seriously troubling features” of this case is those at the highest level of MGN management “were well aware of what was going on”.
Court hears Piers Morgan and MGN lawyers “knew full well” that Prince Michael of Kent’s financial information was “obtained unlawfully and that the criminal law had in fact been breached”
Prince Harry is not here at the Royal Courts of Justice today but he’s at the heart of this civil trial: a crucial flank of his crusade against British tabloids
Today’s target: MGN - publisher of Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror & Sunday People
The papers are accused of unlawful information-gathering: things like voicemail interception, the obtaining of private information by deception - aka “blagging” - and the use of private investigators for unlawful activities.
Barrister David Sherborne told the court the unlawful activity was carried out on “industrial scale” over around 20 years.
Here’s what we learnt on Day Two of Duke of Sussex v NGN hearing…
#PrinceHarry was watching on a video-link from LA as more shocking details about alleged hacking and blagging at The Sun and News of The World were revealed in court documents.
It’s alleged in the mid-90s The Sun was even intercepting the phone calls and messages of Charles, now King Charles, and Camilla, now Queen Consort.
Prince Harry claims his own private information about his “education, his health and welfare” - would’ve been accessed as a result #hacking#RoyalFamily
Back at the High Court for another explosive Prince Harry court case against the tabloids - this time it’s The Sun and the News of the World #PrinceHarry#RoyalFamily
Prince Harry is not here at the High Court today - but his presence looms large in the British judicial system right now. This is the latest in a series of legal battles against tabloid newspapers
Prince Harry accuses The Sun and the News of the World of multiple unlawful acts:
-illegally intercepting voicemails
-“blagging” private info like phone bills or medical records
-using private investigators to commit unlawful acts
