🧵 on #SNAP #Medicaid #SafetyNet #WorkRequirements
* Just because you want a job, doesn’t mean anyone will hire you.
* No evidence making someone hungrier/sicker, helps them get/keep a job or get more hrs at work.
* Significant maj of ppl who’re poor have income from work. (1/8)
* Even among workers substantially employed, 1 out of every 10 does not earn enough to lift their family above the FEDERAL poverty line. These people will have to take TIME OFF WORK in order to submit proof that they are working. It’s the #KeepingYouFromWorkRequirement. (2/8)
* Often, ppl working the hardest and longest hours need the help the most, but have erratic schedules, lack transportation and broadband, and/or are denied worker protections that are supposed to guarantee they receive a pay stub necessary to prove work, so fail to do so. (3/8)
* Supporters of work requirements pretend they don’t hurt #children, ppl who are elderly or ppl who have disability. That is a lie. Most ppl subject to work requirements live w/ or help care for others. People live in communities. We all suffer when anyone goes hungry. (4/8)
* And they won’t tell you that for every $1 B SNAP benefits cut from ppl looking for work, unable to get time off to prove work, or just plain out of work, 15k grocery, trucking, farming & food worker jobs are lost. Rural communities rely most on these jobs & hurt the most. (5/8)
* It is absolutely unacceptable that the GOP pulled out the 30-yr-old welfare reform lies & scribbled them onto a ransom note as they they rolled up to the #DebtCeiling negotiations. But it will be unforgivable if @POTUS takes the bait. (6/8)
* SNAP Work requirements were wrong in 1996, but strengthening & expanding them is even worse now b/c we have evidence they don’t work to promote work. If #debtlimit deal includes this, we all know it will only be b/c poor ppl lack political power. clasp.org/blog/work-requ… (7/8)
* And making people hungrier and sicker will only make them less politically powerful and more vulnerable to abusive work practices and harmful public public policies in the future. My guess? House GOP would be o.k. with that. (8/8) @threadreaderapp unroll
