Research indicates that metabolic pathways play a significant role in regulating the aging process of organisms, suggesting that manipulating metabolism can potentially enhance healthspan and lifespan. (1/15)
So much so, that scientists are currently exploring dietary interventions and compounds that can modulate metabolism as potential anti-aging strategies. (2/15) doi.org/10.1016/j.bj.2…
One particular focus of metabolic interventions aimed at delaying aging is cellular senescence. (3/15)
Cellular senescence refers to a state of stable growth arrest accompanied by various structural and functional changes, including the activation of a pro-inflammatory secretome. (4/15)
What do all these fancy words mean? I will tell you. Because I want you to know all the ways you can feel better (5/15)
That sick cells don't die right. They stay in an in-between zombie state and ooze out a bunch of nonstop pro-inflammatory cytokines that make you sick and age you faster. (6/15)
Do you know what is a great intervention to keep your cells from turning into zombies and oozing inflammation throughout your body? You guessed it—a #ketogenic diet. (7/15)
Studies have shown that beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), a ketone body produced during ketosis, may have a positive effect on cellular senescence. (8/15)
BHB can reduce markers of cellular senescence and senescence-associated phenotypes in various cell types. In case you don't believe me, here is an article talking about it doing this with cartilage. (9/15)

Unsatisfied? Need more. Here is one discussing these effects on the cardiovascular system. (10/15) ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
BHB, one of the ketone bodies you make on a ketogenic diet, has been found to decrease the expression of senescence-associated genes and reduce the secretion of pro-inflammatory factors associated with senescence. (11/15)
Seriously, I am not making this stuff up. It's all right here in the research literature. You just got to look! 🤷 (12/15) doi.org/10.1016/j.smai…
As if all that weren't enough, BHB has been shown to activate specific cellular pathways, such as the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway and the sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) pathway, which are involved in regulating cellular senescence and promoting cellular health. (13/15)
Need a citation to feel confident in your new knowledge? I got you! (14/15) mdpi.com/1752610
Do you want a less bumpy ride on the road to aging, with fewer zombies? Consider a ketogenic diet to upregulate the important pathways in cellular metabolism, energy regulation, and longevity.(15/15) #nozombies #cell #aging

Aldose reductase (AR) is an enzyme that is part of the polyol pathway responsible for converting glucose to sorbitol, which is fine, until it isn't. Settle in for a thread to learn about the later and what it means for brain health. 🧠 (1/11)
Here is a paper discussing a drug that is an aldose reductase inhibitor, talking about how the inhibition of this pathway helps strengthen the BBB and provides neuroprotective effects. (2/11) link.springer.com/article/10.100…
Here is the thing tho. I don't think you need a drug to give you neuroprotective effects. I think just not injuring yourself with your diet can calm this pathway down and give you those same effects. (3/11)

This man has inspired me. So you all get an extra thread today. It's time to learn why astrocytes are so cool. (1/11)
Astrocytes are part of the group of cells known as glial cells. The term "glia" comes from the Greek word for "glue," reflecting the supportive role these cells play. (2/11)
They help organize and maintain the neuronal network by guiding neurons during migration, providing a supportive structure for neuronal connections, and regulating extracellular ions and neurotransmitters. (3/11)

Some of you are using medication to treat MCI and the cognitive decline that is a part of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. (1/11)
And while I would never presume to give you medical advice, I really think you would want to know about a recent study led by Gibson and others. (2/11)

You might say, "Hey, Nicole! My chronic brain fog is not Mild Cognitive Impairment, because I don't have any problems with memory." 🧵(1/17)
And that might be true. But I want you to know there are different forms of #MCI and what they might mean to you. But first, let's define what Mild Cognitive Impairment is for those who don't know. (2/17)
Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a condition that involves problems with cognitive function that are noticeable but not severe enough to interfere significantly with daily life. (3/17)

I feel like GLP1-agonists are like throwing buckets of water on a house fire. Do they help? Sure. Do they stop your house from being on fire? Absolutely not. (1/4)
If people just want to feel a little better, I get that. The bar for what we can expect has been set so low that quite frankly that is all they are expecting. (2/4)
But I think they should be offered an intervention that puts out the fire in the house and offers the prospect of rebuilding to occur. (3/4)

If you or a loved one suffers from migraines, you are going to want to settle in for this thread going over the outcomes of a recently published study. 🧵(1/15) #migraine #neurotwitter
Migraine patients report sleep problems. But how much of that is due to pain or other factors going on with this neurological disease? (2/15)
These researchers wanted to see if the effects of a ketogenic diet could modify sleep issues in patients with migraines and to clarify whether those changes came from the ketogenic diet's effects on headache symptoms. (3/15)
