Ed has become a bath guy. With all the soaps and oils and lotions Stede has been acquiring, everyday he smells a bit different. It's relaxing and decadent and Ed could spend hours just soaking his worn body.
"Stede! Come join me!"
When thr seas are calm and empty, both captains can hide away for a bit, and lately that means a soak. They've tried to get Izzy to join in, but he resists still with honestly solid reasons.
"Awful waste of fresh water"
"What if we're boarded while you're covered in bubbles?"
So they share it, just Ed and Stede.
"Coming, Darling."
Ed doesn't always think back to that night and his confession to Stede, not anymore. They have had so many more nights with better memories now.
Stede bustles in, already draped in his golden robe, Ed's new robe on his arm.
"Still warm, Dearest?"
"Mmhmm. Hop in."
Ed opens his eyes to watch Stede. It's not a show, not intended to entice, but Ed can't help enjoying seeing Stede in all his glory. Gold and pink and Ed thinks of peaches.
"Lavender and bergamot, tonight?"
"Yep, wanted to smell like tea."
Stede steps into the tub and lays back into Ed arms. Everything is warm and hazy, comfortable and calm.
Ed kisses Stede's crown. Stede rubs his knee. This is just one version of love. A simple one. A giving one. A cozy one.
"Love you, Stede." Ed mutters, close to nodding off.
"Love you too, Ed." Stede turns, kisses him softly, thanks his lucky stars.
Later when Ed gets out smelling utterly edible, he greets Izzy in their cabin with a warm hug and a find smile, and he doesn't say anything about Izzy's blatant inhale.
He might convince him yet.
"Stede! C'mere, mate!"
Stede was captain on duty for the afternoon, but it'd been a quiet day. Clear skies and no ships on the horizon, so Stede felt safe enough to answer Ed's calls from the dark hallway to the captains' cabin.
"Yes, Ed?"
"C'mon. Got you a present in our room." Ed said with a wink and turned toward the door.
Stede followed excitedly. Ed's presents since he'd returned had always been fantastic, especially since they usually included one or both of them naked.
Ed ushered Stede through the door crying "Close your eyes!" As he took him by the shoulders and walked him through the room.
"'Kay, one minute." He said with a giggle.
Stede waited patiently.
"...okay...open!"
Stede was standing in front of the bed nook with the curtains drawn.
"Wear a coat, Darlings. It's quite nippy out there this morning." Stede called as Ed and Izzy headed for the door.
The thing Izzy hadn't anticipated about being in a relationship with Stede Bonnet was how much the man cared about his comfort.
Wear a coat.
Take a hat.
Sit by the fire a bit.
A tea will sooth your throat.
Would you rather be on the outside?
Can I touch you there?
Would you rather Ed help?
Are you sore?
Oh dear, you've gone all red, should I shave first next time?
Is it too rich?
Can I rub your feet?
It was infuriating how much he saw. How much he thought about Izzy every day. Ed seemed enamored with the attention, but Izzy itched from it. It was lovely and annoying and it made him want to throttle and kiss Stede all in one breath.
The smell coming from the galley tonight is delicious and smoky. Something mildly spiced and heavy on sweetly roasted vegetables. Izzy's looking forward to what he's sure will be a seafood stew with potatoes and cabbage and his mouth waters at the prospect.
At the ringing of the bell, he makes his way slowly while the rest of the crew rushes to be first in line. Lucius makes a face when he gets his bowl, but Roach sees and smacks his hand.
"Be greatful you're getting fresh vegetables, or you'll get nothing at all."
Izzy can't help a small smile at the scene that he quickly hides. But Roach has caught him, too. He seems to see everything lately.
Roach smiles at him kindly as he gives him a bowl filled just a bit more than anyone else's.
"Meet your expectations, Izzy?"
He nods. "Smells good."
Jim's never been great at talking. Not the best at knowing what they're feeling, let alone telling someone else those feelings. Gestures, though, gestures Jim can do.
They buy Olu flowers, something purple and half closed, something he can read into if he chooses.
They pick an outfit, well, they let Lucius pick an outfit that he says looks 'hot' and 'scary' and Jim figures that Olu will like it well enough. He always says they look good in anything. The more Jim hears it, the more they believe it.
Jim arrives at the door and knocks. It's more polite than just texting or beeping from the road. Olu opens it, suspicious when he sees Jim in their nice clothes and their hands behind their back.
"I'm taking you on a date." Jim says firmly .
Olu smiles and chuckles kindly.
The door closes with a click and Stede slides down it to the floor. There's hard days and then there's days like today and he wonders again if it's worth it to keep going. He closes his eyes and imagines the water and sun and feeling his body moving with the current.
"Rough day?"
Stede opens one eye and peers up.
Ed holds out a glass of water and a couple acetaminophen tabs.
"You're a saint."
Stede takes the offerings, sets them on the floor and pulls Ed down into his arms.
"No saints here, Darling, just a lowly worshipper at your feet."
Stede feels Ed's lips on his neck and the warmth of his body leeching into his own.
"Ready to get up?"
It's muttered into his neck in warm puffs.
"Yeah"
They rise still in each other's arms. It's a testament to their well learned balance.
"Can we go back to the sea?"
Izzy aches and there's this spot in his back that he NEEDS cracked. It's distracting. It's all he can think about. If he can sneak away, maybe he can-
"First Mate Hands, a word."
"Sir." Izzy responds with a nod, following Bonnet to the Captain's cabin.
Bonnet fixed him with an appraising look once the door closed.
"Is something wrong, Izzy?" He paused, seemingly afraid to overstep their carefully forged bounds. "You seem...off."
Izzy wasn't sure what unnerved him more, that Bonnet noticed or that he spoke up.
"I'm fine, Sir." Izzy kept his head down, eyes averted. (Show deference to your Captain, dog).
He heard the tsk, tamped down the urge to speak back. Then Bonnet was urging his chin up.
"Izzy, it's just us. We're not playing right now. You can tell me."
Bonnet smiled gently.
