Do you know where many content websites struggle?

Processes because neither tools nor the #SEO industry talks about them.

It's all about abstraction and shiny objects, right?

Let's see some practical steps for ROI and 💸 🧵
The first recommendation is to always label your data.

If you have a content plan (you should), it needs to contain:

- The cluster(s) an article belongs to

- Additional information like author, date published

You add what you can't scrape or see elsewhere.
Once you have decent data, we are ready for all the other steps.

Data quality and organization are not the future because they are the present.

You can see who is struggling by looking at their management.

Many organizations are not as organized as you think.
With this knowledge, you can choose 2 routes:

1. Creating your own tools

2. Having some decent systems

Option 1 is great for larger businesses that can afford it.

Option 2 is what I usually do since it's on a smaller scale.

Examples include small web apps, scripts, etc.
What I normally recommend to track:

- 0-clicks pages & low-performing pages
- queries with low clicks, high impr.
- what happens over time to query groups
- internal linking

More or less, this is what many businesses need.

SEO doesn't change, we're talking about processes.
Monitoring pages is cool but what about queries?

Well, you analyze them too, but within groups by clicks/impressions.

Then, you pick low clicks/high impressions.
Another concept to recall is how many queries a page is ranking for.

This is a useful benchmark to understand the most relevant pages on a website.

You can also use the unique query count to avoid dupes.
Content Decay deserves its own tweet.

It's a simple concept to find what thas lost traffic over time.

You decide based on a value, easy and quick.
Monitoring is IMHO the most crucial activity.

That's because you want to defend your rankings and consistently improve.

Without data, this is impossible.

How do you know you are losing clicks if you don't check?

That's why we track things.
I am not covering Tech SEO stuff because there are plenty of resources on the topic.

For larger websites, this part becomes to get even more important.

Publishers, take notes.

What I said before can fit into Tech SEO as well, with the due precautions.
Once you have your nice tech stack in place, you have to define how to make data actionable.

I love to write simple documentation with tasks.

This is the execution part, what makes the difference.

If you fail at this step, no data can save you.
I don't do anything different from the boring SEO standards.

The only difference is about systems, data, and decision-making.

Most of the SEO for content websites is boring but effective.

Execution is where many fail (and it makes sense).

Great #SEO requires you to have a solid value proposition.

I have seen too many projects fail for the wrong reasons.

Want some common sense?

Here it is 🧵
Don't start a project without knowing the budget.

It's fine to explore topics and ideas but don't exaggerate.

You can't compete in some niches without the proper resources.

This is why some projects fail. They forgot to estimate costs and revenues...
Now, financial estimation isn't SEO but something an investor should do.

Some domains are clearly money sinks and you as an SEO may help in finding such opportunities.

I recommend avoiding projects that are destined to fail.

It's a waste of time for either party involved.

Some underrated topics are much more valuable than others.

NLP concepts aren't that hard and it takes you like 2 weeks to learn most of them.

The basics alone do the trick.

Understanding how can machines process text is a big plus when explaining On-Page SEO.

Again, you only need some theory and that's it.
Content Marketing isn't simply creating content that ranks.

Embracing different perspectives and ideas is useful if you plan on creating content for multiple channels.

This is where you should be if you want to build a solid brand.

1. Custom images
2. Newsletter
3. A decent design just for branding
4. Internal Linking (in the body)
5. Informative About Us page

Custom images are necessary to differentiate yourself and steal some spots for Images.

This is even more pressing in niches such as travel.

Canva is often enough unless you want to do professional infographics.
The reason why I recommend infographics is because they are easy to share.

This implies you could get some nice backlinks and more og content for your articles.

Don't underestimate the impact of images.

Websites of any kind should leverage:

👉 BigQuery
👉 Search Console API
👉 GA API
👉Tag Manager
👉 Any non-SEO data they can gather

Decision-making becomes so simple once you actually have good data.

BigQuery is not the only option but allows you to store data easily and stay within Google's ecosystem.

This is great news for integration with Google APIs and also for learning.

A lot of SEOs talk about BQ, so it's way easier for you!
BigQuery is one of the tidiest ways to store your data for SEO projects.

The storage costs tend to be quite low, the same I can't say for querying.

That's why knowing concepts such as clustering and partitioning can help you.

N.B. That's more engineering, you don't need them.

1. Only using one data source to delete articles.

If your website is using multiple channels, you should have other data than GSC.

Wait if one article has 0 clicks but high engagement on Facebook?

Guru advice says to delete it, I would never do that.
2. Using Google Analytics as your bible.

The average GA user looks at sessions or users that are hard to convert into actions.

I'd rather check Search Console first and get the unique query count.

Thinking in terms of queries is an additional step that will save you later.

Evergreen content is one of my favorite #SEO topics.

It's super crucial for publishers and especially for niche websites.

And yet, there are many ideas you can use 🧵
Evergreen refers to content that is not time-sensitive and is not particularly subject to seasonality or timeframes.

Search demand is constant through the years. They usually tackle recurring problems or super generic topics.
This type of content makes it easy to apply some advanced principles, as you want them to last.

Having good authors, good syntax with proper entities, and clear internal linking is the bare minimum for me.

This is very simple once you know the niche very well.
