📢STATEMENT:
We condemn the actions of @UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres to travel to #Kazan - Russia, to participate in the #BRICSSummit2024 & to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Guidelines are in place to regulate possible meetings of @UN Secretariat staff with individuals subject to arrest warrants issued by the @IntlCrimCourt. Such a meeting undermines the authority of the #ICC & the inviolability of international justice.
We consider it necessary to take the following steps:
1⃣We call on the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute and the relevant UN bodies to react to the current situation and take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

While the international community’s main focus is on large-scale war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Russian military in the war zone in Ukraine, gross human rights violations in the occupied Crimea remain virtually unnoticed. 2/
On May 26-27, Russian security forces detained four lawyers who have been defending victims of human rights abuses in Crimea since the first days of Russian occupation: Edem Semedliayev, Nazim Sheikhmambetov, Ayder Azamatov, and Emine Avamileva. 3/
Thread. The number of cases against prisoners of war detained during this phase of the conflict will only increase over time. This is evidenced by indictments that are actively published on the official website of the Office of the Prosecutor General. 1/ zmina.info/en/articles-en…
However, the demand for rapid justice or other motives should not be met at the expense of the quality. Otherwise, we risk creating the illusion of justice, which will not result in restoring victims rights or bringing perpetrators to account. 2/
The judiciary system lacks a proper understanding of war crimes, & judges are still skeptical of IHL & ICL in their work. After 8 years of conflict, law enforcement, prosecutors & courts still need thorough systematic training. 3/
