🧵Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has swiftly changed the security landscape of Europe. And as our own @ckafura lays out in @Diplomat_APAC, the war has also opened up a debate in Japan. For #ThreadThursday, we take a look at that debate:
The war in #Ukraine has prompted a much different reaction from Japan than past international crises. Since February, #Japan has imposed broad and escalating economic #sanctions on Russia in coordination with G-7 allies.…
The stronger Japanese response to this crisis is not solely driven by policymakers, but also by the public’s reaction to the war in Ukraine. In @nikkei polling, 61% favored sanctioning #Russia– 2x what polls found after Russia annexed #Crimea in 2014 📊⬇️

#Italy now proposes basically same peace plan that I proposed before & after start of #RussiaUkraineWar. Italy's plan:
Ukraine's accession to EU & neutral status without joining NATO
#Ukraine - #Russia agreement on #Donbas & #Crimea
Peace & security treaty in Europe
Like my #Ukraine peace plan: "Rapid accession to the EU and abandonment of NATO. Italy has developed a plan to end the war in Ukraine and submitted it to the UN Secretary General. It involves the rapid entry of Ukraine into the EU but military neutrality"…
I proposed the same deal in my @CBCNews interview: "Ukraine could be offered EU membership as part of a peace deal where it agrees to renounce NATO membership and declares itself neutral," said Katchanovski."

1/4 🧵Putin is not ready for negotiations. The only way to end this - is the 🇷🇺 army defeat. As for when they will be ready to accept it - I think, we need a few more months.
2/4 Every week the desire to support the "special operation" among russians is going down. No one wants to die for Putin's insane ideas. The rupture in perception among the russians will come in July-August when the number of dead 🇷🇺 troops exceeds 50,000.
3/4 Sanctions against 🇷🇺 must get stronger. One of the ideas - to sanction Yedinaya Rossia (United Russia) members, recognize the party a criminal organization & ban all of its 144 members [in 🇷🇺Duma] from entering civilized world.

Turning the pages of history, today we stop at 1944, remembering the deportation of indigenous people from the Crimean peninsula.
May 18 is the Remembrance Day of the Crimean Tatar Genocide Victims.
On this day in 1944, the forced deportation of the Crimean Tatars began.
This is a calamity that has taken human lives and destroyed everything spiritual and cultural having lovingly been grown in #Crimea. The peninsula has become a springboard for persecution, injustice and inhumanity.
According to official data, 191,044 Crimean Tatars were deported to remote regions of the Soviet Union, from the northern Pre-Urals to the Central Asian republics, and according to the census - 423,100.
We remember! The world needs to know!

More horrors from the occupied territories. Buckle up

The #Russians continue to terrorize in the occupied territories. They rob enterprises, destroy #Ukrainian symbols, organize repressions and kidnap people. Some of them are released after being tortured and abused, nothing is
nothing is known about fate of others. The leader of the #Crimean #Tatar people and People's Deputy Mustafa Dzhemilev said that the abducted #Ukrainian activists from #Zaporizhzhia and #Kherson regions, who were taken to #Crimea, were ransomed by the #Russians for dollars.
The most difficult part is getting them out. Traditional #Russian corruption saves the day: we manage to "buy out" some of the hostages. The price starts at $250 and up, depending on who you negotiate with. It's not possible with everyone. First you need to negotiate, you need to

Being a slow news day as far as info from the critical fronts, want to discuss an event from some days back. #Ukrainian sources released this drone video, claiming it shows a #Russian helicopter being destroyed on #SnakeIsland. Have wanted to discuss since I became aware of it on
May 8. For ~1 week, UA forces targeted #SnakeIsland (or nicer, Serpent Island, of ancient #Achilles lore) with a puzzling amount of air assets. As I reported then, it seemed evident that #Ukraine aimed to recapture the island as a PR coup. The island is also strategic as an AA
asset, has legal territorial ramifications, and is potentially important long term for commercial traffic control of the black sea including #Ukraine's vital exports of grains & wheat. The #Russian MoD later claimed there was such an assault & that significant air & other assets

I'm back, bigger than life and twice as ugly. And it's a beautiful day!

Glory to #Ukraine ✊🏻🇺🇦🤘🏻
It was an eventful trip. There was a lot to see, and a lot to learn, some of it was disturbing to say the least, specifically the sheer amount of abuse inflicted upon the civilian population in #Kherson.

Two Russian BTRs and a handful military personnel less, a modest bounty
that has yielded some valuable intel. These guys have zero opsec awareness, they keep taking photos of stuff they shouldn't, and then leave it on their phones for random drifters to discover. If there was one thing they could've learned from the Nazis is that you don't document

About #Transnistria, #Moldova, #Nato and #Russia. A small🧵

But lets start with Georgia first!

During NATO's 2008 Bucharest summit in Bucharest, United States and Poland called for Georgia to be allowed to join the Membership Action Plan (MAP). A roadmap was set. (1/N)
The issue with accession articles and preambles is that implicitly no country without full control of its borders can join the alliance.

Let it sink.

Neither Georgia, Ukraine nor Moldova can join NATO without solving their territorial issues.

Internal conflicts matter. (2/N)
In Georgia it is #Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
In Ukraine it is #Crimea, #Donbas and #Lugansk regions.
In #Moldova it is #Transnitria.

Note that Russia has been for years working hard on their border issues.

Escalation in new member conflict zone would trigger art5. (3/10)

What was the trigger for #Putin to invade Ukraine?
One of his messages during the 9 May parade was that the West wanted to take #Crimea from Russia. And I think, this is it. Thread.🧵1/9
In 2021 (in previous life huh), Ukraine has launched the Crimea platform - a government organization that aimed to return the #Crimea question to the international agenda on a high level.
The main issue was how we will take the peninsula back from #Russia. 2/9
The main problem with #Crimea was that very few high-up politicians in the West pointed out that #Russia took the peninsula illegally. There was a shameful silence about this Putin’s crime from which, actually, the war in #Donbas started. Impunity has spawned a monster. 3/9

Posizione reiterata sempre, negli anni. #Rasmussen 2014: "The annexation of #Crimea through a so called referendum held at gun point is illegal and illegitimate."

To those still believing that the killing of Ukrainians may be stopped by #Ukraine giving up territory to #Russia: this will bring more war, more devastation and more deaths 🧵/1
Territory is not empty fields or woodland. It’s places where Ukrainian people live. Giving up territory = betrayal of Ukrainians who want to remain Ukrainian in a Ukrainian Ukraine /2
Ceding territory will cause unrest in #Ukraine: people will be separated from friends and family. People will feel abandoned and discriminated /3
