EPA is proposing to eliminate the ENERGY STAR label for one-way air central air conditioners and furnaces:
▶️signaling that #heatpumps are THE efficient choice
▶️shifting utility incentives
▶️changing the market
#heatpumps are necessary for building decarbonization, meeting US net-zero commitments, and halting climate change (from IEA's #WEO World Energy Outlook 2022).
This is a much stronger statement than last year’s notice that EPA would be considering removing the Most Efficient designation from one-way ACs: raponline.org/blog/a-win-for…
That was great to see, but boy am I excited now!
It would cover many more products (21% of ACs and 41% of furnaces sold in 2021 were ENERGY STAR), and the label is also more visible and used by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency and member utilities that follow its recommendations: cee1.org/content/cee-ti…
I am encouraged that EPA seems to be listening to some of our recommendations already---their 50 Mt CO2 reduction estimate over 10 years is almost exactly what CLASP published with Stephen Pantano, @energysmartwv, and @GardMurray in our Hybrid Heat paper clasp.ngo/research/all/3…
Comments are due on June 22, and I am mobilizing to submit comments---so hope you will join me in voicing support!
