Beijing's state planners believed that the Indian-Ocean-facing country could be the main gateway to China.
3/ But Beijing's demands soured the deal. Among the reported conditions were requests that no other port be built in Tanzania.
China is also thought to have said Tanzania "should not question" whoever comes to invest there once the port is operational.
