Thanks @lokeshbag67, for bringing up memories of MY FATHER, S. Thiraviam Nadar in your thread on Rajnikanth's trilingual movie 'Kaala', based on his life. Though @beemji found my father's story inspirational enough to make a movie on it, he clearly got greedy about the story 1/n
This film happened because Rajnikanth wanted a real life classic movie made in the twilight of his career like #nayagan made by #ManiRatnam starring #KamalHaasan in Tamil/Telugu & #VinodKhanna in Hindi #Nayakan 2/n
Though @beemji kept denying that the movie was inspired by my father, I revealed the story of the movie ONE YEAR before the movie was released in this interview. In an interview with Times of India, Chennai, @beemji revealed that he had heard my father's story from his uncle 3/n
@beemji used to visit this uncle residing in Dharavi as a young boy. But just because he has a Dalit identity, this movie cannot be interpreted as a Dalit film. This is as I have reiterated several times in many interviews, a story of Mumbai's urban poor which included Dalits 4/n
My father worked for the abject poor in Dharavi, including dalits, Muslims, Christians, Kolis, even poor Brahmins, besides those from the Nadar community who had fled the famine in Tirunelveli district. He cried when he saw the hungry poor. It did not matter who they were 5/n
It's an irony that my father is from the same generation & district in TamilNadu as #VaradarajanMudaliar, who's life inspired #Nayakan & #HajiMastan who's life inspired #Once__Upon_A_Time_In_Mumbai, but never made the headlines, bcoz he kept his focus on the poor, not crime 6/n
With @gautam_adani eyeing Dharavi with a redevelopment project of 3 billion it must be said how Dharavi sprung up in the first place! Dharavi was nothing more than 600 kms of swamps. My father landed in Mumbai in 1950's as a 16 yr old, fleeing from a killer famine, by mistake 7/n
He had no idea where Mumbai/Bombay was. Most from TN went to either SirLanka or Burma to flee poverty. His destiny brought him to a city where he was alone, did not know the language & still became a hero to millions of poor from his hometown, who's lives he transformed 8/n
Since Dharavi was nothing more than a swamp, my father captured this land & with his people cleared the water, filled it with sand, over which came up the slums, slowly growing to house millions with several industries too. at a time when they made no headlines 9/n
This has been captured in great detail in the animated section of #Kaala, which narrated in several interviews, much before the movie's release. My father & his supporters even built the Kamarajar Memorial High School in Dharavi, which has been shown extensively in the movie 10/n
This school came up on a part of a swamp, where illicit liquor used to be brewed. The school was a necessity, bcoz the nearby Tamil/English schools #SIES & #SIWS, with a brahmin management, refused to give access to the slum kids 11/n
Dharavi was very close to Matoshree which was abode to #BalThackeray, who decided to give wings to his political career in the late 60's,early 70's, by starting a campaign against the "kaala's", the poor "madrassis" running around the slums, trying to live their lives 12/n
My father threatened the then budding politician #BalThackeray that the "kaalas" have nothing to lose, so they will fight till their death, but he needs to watch for his men, the locals It's my father, Varadarajan & Haji Mastan to forced Thackeray to drop his vile campaign 12/n
#NanaPatekar essayed the role of Thackeray without probably realizing who's story it is. Though @wunderbarfilms run by @dhanushkraja refused to give credit, thousands who passed out from Dharavi and now spread around India/World called/messaged to pay tribute to my father 12/n
@msisodia, son of a village school teacher, having received very modest education like more than 95% Indians, vowed to himself that if he ever got a chance to improve education system in the country, he would devote himself to it. As a journalist he was the first to answer 1/9
An anonymous ad by @ArvindKejriwal to start 'parivaratan',an NGO for social change. @SatyendarJain was a successful architect & had worked on major projects in the country & wanted to share his expertise. He decided to set aside a well established business to join Anna Andolan 2/9
He fought elections, despite initial opposition from family. @SatyendarJain's visionary ideas & years of experience, resulted in free electricity/water, govt schools, mohalla clinics, govt hospitals, flyovers/bridges, solar energy panels in govt buildings/housing colonies 3/9
My contribution to a cover story in The Week' on the #HarshadMehta scam in 1992, as a 22 year old, memory now revived by the #GautamAdani scam! This special edition had sold 30,000 extra copies. It made the careers of so many journalists who seriously investigated the scam 1/6
Unlike today, when journalists are speculating on Adani being "targeted", to emerge unscathed soon. 92 scam led to Mehta being treated like a criminal, investigated & arrested by CBI. 70+ offences, with over 600 civil suits, eventually killing him less than a decade later ! 2/6
Journalists speculating about how @narendramodi is being targeted today, brayed for then congress PM Narasimha Rao's blood & @PChidambaram_IN's resignation ! Banks today are as actively involved as they were then. Big difference is that all names were out in the open then ! 3/6
A thread on ridiculous accusations used to beat up @AamAadmiParty by liberals/@INCIndia that @ArvindKejriwal is anti-Muslim!
For decades this country has been divided into Hindu, Muslims,Christians,Dalits,Adivasis,Rich & Poor, Urban/Rural. Never functioned as a single unit! 1/23
This kind of divide suits ALL parties, whether BJP, Congress, LEFT, TMC, SP, JDU. Never has any political party risen above corruption to address basic needs of the people. Babasaheb’s dream of rich & poor sharing the same school bench at govt cost remained only a dream 2/23
Then comes the political disrupter @ArvindKejriwal who along with his trusted & competent band of ministers decide that they will come up with an education & health model, which will benefit ALL, irrespective of religion, caste & their status 3/23
This is how godi media owing allegiance to @BJP4India & various YouTube channels owing allegiance to @INCIndia fool the viewers/readers with false news about @AamAadmiParty. Since AAP took charge in Delhi in Feb 2015,center took back almost all of powers of the state govt 1/14
Under the guise of it being a UT, granting all powers to the @LtGovDelhi to keep a check on AAP’s people friendly policies.
It was not until October 2018, that the SC returned most of the powers to the state government, still holding back Services, Land, besides the police. 2/14
As a result, @ArvindKejriwal who wanted to build schools. colleges, universities, mohalla clinics & hospitals all over Delhi, in just five years to make up for the deficit of 75 years, were stopped in the tracks by successive LG's. 3/14
The film’s narrative is set around the exodus of the 3 million Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley since January 1990, supposedly to highlight the plight of thousands of them “forced” to flee their hometowns and forced to live the life of a refugee since then #KashmirFiles 1/18
The dangerous trend however is that the film, in line with the right wing Hindutva agenda, hopes to seek sympathy for the Pandits by demonizing the Kashmiri Muslim. #KashmirFiles 2/18
Decades of insurgency and political callousness has reduced the beautiful, enchanting Kashmir valley into a bloodied mess, hurting both the Kashmiri Pandits, who made up about 5% of the population, before the exodus and the Kashmiri Muslims made up to 95% of the population 3/18
Truth be told, 99% of the journalists in the country, even the most well known ones, do not have the insight to understand what exactly @ArvindKejriwal is doing in Delhi, or what he intends to do in every state that has the courage to vote for AAP now 1/16
Experience, just by virtue of the number of years spent at your desk, does not always mean deep insights. It also means closed mind sets, honed to think in a particular, stuck up way. @sardesairajdeep's interview with @ArvindKejriwal yesterday is one such prime example 2/16
A Goan journalist mentioned to Rajdeep in @TheLallantop that Goans believe AAP MLA's will not sell out to BJP like Cong. AAP has had a very bad experience with Cong in 2015, when Cong offered outside support to AAP to form the govt but was working hard to make the party sink 3/16
