🧵The Abolitionist Movement is at the SBC Annual Meeting once again! This will be a running thread of Tuesday's events which relate to abolitionism.
As background, our resolution was not submitted by the usual means this year because of an error on the SBC submission website. They said resolutions were due by May 30th when resolutions were actually due May 29th.
@Jonathan_Howe Now to this morning's events. Abolitionist pastor Aaron Wright (@gfbc1689) motioned to bring the abolitionist resolution up for consideration and a vote during the Resolutions Committee report at 2:40PM eastern this afternoon.
Abolitionist J.R. Haas of @AATXNow then made a point of order, asking for clarification on when exactly the vote would be and when the resolution would be published publicly, pointing out that people would need time to consider the content of the resolution before voting. @AATXNow@bartbarber announced at the beginning of the Resolutions Committee report that Aaron Wright's motion to hear and vote on the abolitionist resolution would be ruled on during the Committee on the Order of Business Report this evening, contradicting his earlier promise to J.R.… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
@AATXNow@bartbarber The convention is now hearing nominations for president. Barber famously opposed bills to abolish abortion and viciously slandered abolitionist SBC pastor Dusty Deevers. He was nominated by a man who told messengers the SBC was in great shape. #SBC2023
Barber's opponent, Mike Stone, has rebuked the SBC's ethics leaders at the ERLC who publicly opposed the abolition of abortion. Voting is taking place right now and the winner will be announced later. Vote Mike Stone! #SBC2023
Bart Barber is elected for a second term. Pray for his repentance regarding the abolition of abortion and for him to repent of his treatment of @DustyDeevers.
Aaron Wright's motion was ruled out of order by the committee. No explanation was given. The SBC has successfully kept abolitionism from consideration in 2023.
@cuatronelson gave a fiery nomination of abolitionist leader @DustyDeevers for 1st VP of the SBC. Dusty is one of the best pastors of one of the best churches in the convention (I'm biased, I go there). The vote results will be announced tomorrow. Pray for Dusty to be elected!
@cuatronelson@DustyDeevers Dusty lost, splitting the conservative vote with Gevan Spinney. Establishment candidate Jay Adkins received a similar percentage as Barber in the Presidential race. Praise God for men like Dusty.
@cuatronelson@DustyDeevers Abolitionist @BrianGunter1689 asks ERLC President and anti-abolitionist @LeatherwoodERLC whether a woman who murders her newborn should be prosecuted. Leatherwood completely ignores Gunter's question and gives a pro-life stump speech.
@cuatronelson@DustyDeevers@BrianGunter1689@LeatherwoodERLC For context regarding the previous tweet, here's the full story of Brent Leatherwood and the ERLC joining with other pro-life leaders to kill the bill which would have abolished abortion in Louisiana.
Abolitionist pastor Richard Henry asks MWBTS President Jason Allen whether preborn children should receive the protection of homicide laws. Like Akin, Allen was more forthright than last year, but he appears to argue that women should be able to murder children with legal… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Here is context about the previous tweet regarding Allen's claim about abortion being illegal in some states. Here's proof that it's still legal in all 50 states.
Abolitionist Rodney King questions NOBTS President @JamieKDew regarding why there is a group of people who are allowed to murder preborn children with impunity. Dew didn't seem to make the connection that the mainstream pro-life position held by most in SBC leadership provides a… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
🧵Why Abortion Remains Legal in Every State: An SBC Case Study
The first abolitionist resolution was at the 2021 #SBC annual meeting. The Resolutions Committee declined it, but the messengers voted overwhelmingly to bring it to the floor over Nathan Finn's objections. (1/16)
I was in the room and would estimate that 85-90% of the messengers voted to override the committee. In years of observing SBC annual meetings, I have never seen the platform overruled by the messengers by such an overwhelming margin. (2/16)
That night, Bart Barber and other SBC leaders made impassioned pleas on social media to messengers asking them to oppose the resolution on the floor the next day. (3/16)
🧵A fantastic case study of the stupidity of incrementalism.
Pressure is building on SBC Executive Committee to support the Mike Law amendment which would establish that the SBC doesn't allow female "pastors." But SBC leaders don't want the amendment. They want a big tent.(1/10)
But pressure is building. They have to do something! So they remove a handful of the hundreds of egalitarian SBC churches to try to take the wind out of the sails of the conservative forces who are trying to pass the Mike Law amendment. (2/10)
This helps them save face and helps everyone feel complementarian. It relieves the pressure that's building in favor of what actually needs done. So the Executive Committee removed Saddleback while also recommending the messengers oppose the Mike Law amendment. (3/10)
🧵The ERLC springs to action for a pro-life bill that will likely save 0 lives, and springs to action to oppose bills that would abolish abortion. (1/5)
This is politics 101. Look like you're doing something (passing do-nothing pro-life laws) while working to make sure that nothing actually changes (opposing abolition). @bradleywpierce spoke on this at the 2021 Abolition Now Conference. (2/5)
The ERLC is not a Christian advocacy organization in the public square. They are political actors who do what polling allows while opposing Christians proclaiming repentance to the nation. Churches are leaving the SBC over ERLC wickedness and rightly so. (3/5)
The Church and State are two separate spheres/jurisdictions. The Church preaches the Word, administers ordinances, practices church discipline, and proclaims the gospel to the nations. The State bears the sword of justice against criminals. (2/6)
Each institution must stay in their lane. The Church must not wield the Sword, and the State must not administer ordinances or practice church discipline. (3/6)
