Today the @Europarl_EN is discussing the future of the EU’s flagship #Euro7 pollution rules for 🚗 and 🚛

@EP_Environment MEPs must oppose the watering down and loopholes that the lead MEP wants to insert into new rules to slash toxic pollution and protect citizens's health.
🧵 Image
Today’s Euro 6 trucks emit up to 8x the legal limit for toxic NOx pollution when driving in cities.

Yet @AlexandrVondra wants to scrap new test requirements for trucks and weaken pollution limits, putting truckmakers’ profits ahead of people’s health.

A loophole would circumvent the EU CO2 standards and allow cars and trucks running on polluting e-fuels and biofuels to be sold in Europe.

These fake solutions from the oil industry risk opening the door to continuing fossil fuel use.

There’s 250m cars on EU roads but no limits on tyre pollution.

Tying the EU’s hands to yet-to-be-developed UN standards risks weak and delayed limits which will do little to cut the 400,000 tonnes of tyre microplastic pollution released every year.

Weakening the on-road testing conditions for the 100m cars which will be sold in Europe before 2035 means that, under many normal driving conditions, emission limits will not have to be met.

A solo traveler could save up to €65 on a night train from Amsterdam to Madrid return with changes to the way trains are taxed 🌙🚆

Trains have a climate impact nearly 28x less than planes - but high cost is putting off consumers.
🧵 Image
Budget airlines get huge incentives from the government that keep prices cheap.

Trains should benefit from similar measures to keep them competitive.
2/5
T&E found that night train prices could drop by an average of 15% with:

💰0% VAT rate on ticket prices
🛂reducing charges paid by operators to use rail infrastructure across borders

The growing use of animal fat biofuels in European transportation is an unsustainable way to meet our renewable energy targets.

Energy companies need to provide more transparency so that consumers know the source of the fuel powering their cars or planes.
🧵

-Posted by OneUp Image
The use of animal fat biodiesel has doubled in the past decade and is 40 times higher than it was in 2006.

Major airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air are sourcing higher quantities of sustainable aviation fuel, but the origin of these fuels is often suspect.
2/6
Animal fats are expected to be the most common ‘waste’ feedstocks in SAFs next to used cooking oil.

But availability is limited, and scaling up industrial meat farming is not a desirable solution.

Aviation and shipping have the fastest growing emissions in EU transportation, while road transport still makes up a majority of the sector’s emissions.

Decarbonising transport must be a priority as member states develop their national climate plans for Fit for 55.
🧵 Image
EU member states will submit drafts for their 10–year National Energy and Climate Plans (NECP) next month to the Commission.

These plans have never been more critical - poor planning could mean missing key climate markers and the EU failing to meet its climate targets.

🚗🚍Road transport makes up 3/4 of Europe’s transportation emissions.

Member states should accelerate the uptake of zero-emission vehicles with smarter taxation on polluting vehicles and by adopting measures to electrify all corporate cars by 2030.

NEW: Corporate cars have a massive role to play in the EV transition, but they remain off the EU’s climate agenda.

What would it mean if Europe were to set a 2030 battery electric target for company cars?
🧵 Image
Company cars make up 58% of new cars in the EU, but since they are driven at a higher frequency than private cars they account for 76% of emissions from new cars.

This means that corporate fleets offer an efficient way to drastically reduce emissions from road transport.
2/7
Some non-binding targets have been set for fleet electrification at the national level but this has been proven to not work.

In France, a voluntary target for fleet electrification led to only 34% of companies increasing their EV uptake in line with these targets.

PHEVs seem ideal - battery for local trips, engine for long distances - but tests on three models reveal this is a myth. They must be taxed based on their real-world emissions, not their marketing claims 🧵👇 Image
T&E tested three of the newest generation of PHEVs - a BMW 3 Series, Peugeot 308 & Renault Megane - on a typical city and commuter route and from both a full and uncharged battery.
On the commuter route each car polluted much more than its official rating:
❌ The BMW emitted 3x its rating
❌ The Peugeot emitted 20% more
❌ The Renault emitted 70% more
And this was only on a short round-trip route of 55km. Image

Living in dreamworld: why international aviation emissions have no chance of being addressed at UN @icao level

🧵
@eaTransport @EURACTIV @CarbonMrktWatch

euractiv.com/section/aviati…
For decades, the #aviation industry has long resisted all but ineffective international regulation on emissions.

The UN body @icao has only agreed to regulations that promote growth📈and has done nothing to reduce emissions.
International aviation will be regulated by a cheap #offsetting scheme. Why is that bad?
❌The offset price is less that €1/tonne of CO2
❌Passengers will pay €2 on a flight to NY to offset emissions
❌These sums won't incentivise the uptake of clean fuels or technology
