🏫 Today, June 16 1976, young people in South Africa organized a peaceful march against a 1974 decree that made it mandatory for Black highschools to use the Afrikaans language–‘language of the oppressor’–as the medium of instruction. This is known as the #Soweto uprising

🧵👇🏽
Agitated by Black Consciousness, growing economic & political injustice, 30,000 youth–as young as 12 yrsold–took to the streets.

When the students were met w/ violent state repression, they stood firm and fought back. Some estimate that there were 700 fatalities that year. Image
Later, students shifted to more sophisticated tactics in organized units, such as ambush, barricade, subterfuge & the destruction of symbols of racist oppression

In solidarity, Black communities & over 250,000 workers went on strikes, inflicting significant damage on the economy Image
Starting in Soweto before spreading to urban centers nationwide, this youth-led revolt had a huge socio-political impact in South Africa as it reinvigorated mass-based, militant resistance not only against racist education policies, but against the Apartheid system as a whole. Image
In post-Apartheid South Africa, June 16th is commemorated as Youth Day in memory of those who rose up against oppression.

You might’ve heard that Joe Biden renewed Cuba on the State Sponsors of Terrorism List. Being on this list isn’t just a label, it has serious consequences for everyday Cuban people.

6.25 RIDE TPF BUS to DC to take Cuba #OffTheList: peoplesforum.org/offthelist

5 Reasons Why
🧵👇🏽 Image
1. In fact, Cuba should be on the sponsor of PEACE list
Cuba was placed on the State Sponsors of Terrorism list by Trump in 2021 for hosting peace talks to end the civil war in Colombia.
Just days ago, Cuba brokered a ceasefire, helping to resolve a civil war that raged on for over 70 years and resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths. Trump decided to punish Cuba for promoting peace, and Biden is following suit!

❗️Did you know that the Indonesian Communist Party (#PKI) was the largest communist party outside of the Soviet Union and China, until the U.S. backed genocide in 1965?

🧵👇🏽A thread
The Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) was founded during the period of Dutch colonialism in 1920, and due to its anti-colonial activities and the revolts of 1926 and 1927, it was outlawed and many of its leaders were exiled.
The party played a leading role in #Indonesia’s National Revolution. Through 4 years of armed and organized struggle, Indonesia won its independence in 1949. During these years, the PKI grew from an obscure party to a large movement, with almost 2 million members.

Just some quick facts
🧵👇🏽a thread

🪖 The U.S. has over 800 military bases overseas, in other sovereign nations. This includes only sites that the Pentagon has publicly reported on.
💰This year, the Biden Administration increased the Pentagon spending budget to $886 billion, the largest in history. This is more than the next nine countries' military spending combined.
📈This money, and the $50 billion the U.S. has sent to Ukraine, goes to multinational weapons corporations like Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, which are seeing record profits.
