Can’t quite believe we’re here again after the chaos of Paris last year + promises made that Istanbul would be better …. but we’ve tried to collate the experiences of Man City fans in the paper today + I’m properly shocked at what went on last weekend in Istanbul…
Shocked that having put some work into this, @UEFA wouldn’t even comment or offer any apology. I’m guessing they will in time but impression it gives is that they don’t care (FWIW I know there are people who do, but the official face is so tone deaf)…..
I can’t think of any other leisure event where you would pay between €70 to €690 (+flights + hotels) + then be asked to queue for 2hrs to get a bus to take you there, which itself might take 3hrs….this is queue for shuttle buses from @PeterCampbe11 Image
That you may not get a seat so in reality you can be standing for 5hours in heat to get to event. Oh, and they confíscate your water for journey 🤷🤯
Of course there are no toilet facilities on the bus
Almost like this wasn’t thought through with needs of fans foremost…
Then once you arrive at stadium queues are 1hour plus for food and toilets….the taken by @PIettigoaI who says queues were 1hr 45mins long
There was some blatant racketeering inside stadium detailed here by @City_Xtra + corroborated by people I’ve spoken to. €10 bottles of water (when you’ve had yours confiscated😡), bars mysteriously becoming cash only at higher than advertised prices….

cityxtra.co.uk/4468/motorhome…
The toilets in stadium car park were also inadequate, as detailed by @City_Xtra

Basically RVs. One tried to drive off with a fan still in there which would be almost comical we’re it not for the litany of contempt it represents from organisers
After the match was even worse. This is the queue for shuttle buses home from @1894andrew

Again no stewards or officials to guide, queues of more than an hour only then to sit on gridlocked car park for 2 hours… Image
This morning I’ve heard many Man City staff were stuck for 3hours I’m car park after game. Which is 1 way to deflate a party.

I’ve also been told gridlock was same for VIPs

The point is tho that VIPs weren’t travelling like this (@1894andrew)
And until someone at UEFA can tell me why this is acceptable, then I’ll keep banging on about this. What I don’t get is, whether this was local organisers or not, it’s @UEFA brand on the tin. They get blame so why do they let this happen?
Specially I want to talk to Aleksander Čeferin, president. #LFC #MCFC literally saved his job when they protested against their own clubs, lobbied govt + brought down Super League. And this is how they’re repaid?!….
Now this calamity wasn’t the near ‘mass fatality catastrophe’ of last year. Yet there are parallels. Key take homes from Paris report were inadequate stewards on ground who spoke English/Spanish, no direction as to where to go….
Despite UEFA engaging widely before the event with fans, this happened again. How can this be?

Also miscommunication of travel advice almost caused tragedy in Paris. Again, every City fan I’ve spoken to thinks official advice was avoid metro, take buses..
UEFA have shown me message they say was sent out which says metro is a good way to get there. But they need to understand why that message wasn’t received or communicated …
And lastly, just because there isn’t a near fatal crush, doesn’t mean ‘all’s well that ends well’. Tragedies are born out of years of contempt, indifference, bad organisation. You get away with it 9/10 times. And then you don’t….that’s why this matters…
Anyway, if you’re still with me and have an appetite for more of this the link is here 👇

Lastly (really lastly) a huge thanks to Man City fans who took time to contact me this week especially @PeterCampbe11 @1894andrew @djge99 @Felix6ood @PIettigoaI @AntCrick

This is the story of a 17-year-old playing U20 football for a Brazilian 4th division side off the beaten track, two hours outside Sao Paolo

And the story of a scout’s hunch, formulated only by watching some grainy iPhone footage, that he might be worth a watch.. (pic Ituano FC) Image
…there’s no data on the player, no stats to make him stand out. Just the initial take of Brazilian scout Everton Gushiken that he might be worth tracking. Equally, you would have to ask, if he’s any good why haven’t Corinthians or Palmeiras picked him up? ….
This is how Frannie Cagigao finds himself in a run-down stadium an hour outside Sao Paolo watching Ituano’s U20s. It is the story of Gabriel Martinelli, the story of how Barça + Man Utd turned him down + how Arsenal eventually got him…

The UEFA independent review into Paris Champions League Final is a staggering read. At the time you had an instinctive feeling no one knew what was going on. Reading report shows how rank incompetence + arrogance led people into a death trap….
There are so many jaw droppings moments of incredible incompetence, it’s hard to do justice to how thorough report is. That said, some moments that stand out…..
The report says even as potential disaster was ensuing, there was no crisis meeting with police but there was a meeting about how VIP transport after the match might be affected….

PL investigation into Man City started in Dec 2018, after Spiegel emails leaks

But both City + PL tried to keep details secret even when it reached High Court. Which was an extraordinary case of corporates trying to evade scrutiny

The Mail on Sunday challenged that in court…
….and Ld Justice Males sided with us + said:
'It is surprising, and a matter of legitimate public concern, that so little progress has been made after two and a half years — during which, it may be noted, the club has twice been crowned as Premier League champions.'
That was in July 2021 and since then City have been champions again.

I’ve no idea how the case will end but bear in mind UEFA’s case failed because they relied on Spiegel leaked emails + didn’t have access to other internal documents (cos City didn’t cooperate)…

Should say at outset, that I don’t necessarily believe all of what follows. But simply trying to explain the thinking behind Todd Boehly’s ‘reinventing the wheel’ £600m splurge….
For those of us with longer memories it is slightly reminiscent of Peter Ridsdale’s ‘living the dream’ at Leeds or the Venky Bros. at Blackburn….yet there is some logic behind what they’re doing (even if it’s risky)….
When I put it to people who understand their thinking that you can’t reinvent the wheel in football + that if it was that easy, everyone would be doing it, they were like ‘you absolutely can reinvent the wheel’

🧵It’s always useful (IMO) to rewatch a big game after event, without the emotion + angst. And, as a journalist, without the stress of 1000 words to send as the whistle blows! With that in mind, some thoughts on my re-watch of ENG v FRA
I’ll try to point out what is more apparent in cold light of day rather than re-emphasise things that were obvious on night, such as Saka was brilliant + unplayable for spell in 2nd half (he was)….
First up, Griezmann. In opening 20mins he gets in the area between Shaw, Rice, Bellingham. It’s a Bermuda Triangle of space which ENG don’t properly address. He’s always popping up, causing trouble. and France 1st goal comes from him being in space there….

Let’s address the Pochettino/Tuchel thing

A disclaimer: I like Poch more than any manager I’ve worked with. So what is said below is not against him. It’s directed at what elite club manager culture has become…..
Because it is such a ruthless, pressurised world, the ‘potential coach of elite club’ bubble (which comprises about 10-12 coaches) has to develop a sense of self that is unsuited to the England job….
You’re always (necessarily) having to think of yourself, your CV, how this might look in 18months

Things you don’t need to worry about:

The future of English football
The age group teams (other than ‘is there a good 19 year old who could help me?’)
Team’s tactical development
