Very interesting Australian radio broadcast from 11th June on two technology subjects of intensely important international issues.
1. The potential opening up of Seabed Mining - for rare earth minerals which has an important deadline in July - after which applications for… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Controversy over this issue is building rapidly as prominent environmentalists come forward to oppose it including Sir David Attenborough. aol.co.uk/ministers-brav…
Meanwhile @ScienceMagazine is reporting on a recent European Advisory panel which says that the potentially hugely harmful planned ocean bottom mining activity is unnecessary.
The international Seabed Authority isa.org.jm which is tasked with deciding whether and how to open up and then consider potential mining applications is now in a very very hot seat.
Like many UN Bodies the ISA is governed by member states making decisions as an assembly - meaning it is in effect an international political organ like the UNGA and the UNFCCC meaning the outcomes of decisions to be made in July are far from a done deal - and could easily become… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
With massive corporate efforts and interest - significant geopolitical implications- and significant amounts of prospecting and technology development for the new sector having been underway for decades the environmental diplomatic furore come July is likely to be monumental.
The 28th Session of the International Seabed Authority began in March and runs till November in Kingston Jamaica, concluding shortly before #COP28 convenes in Dubai (UAE).
This from @ObserverUK is probably the best article currently available to get your head around the coming - fast approaching - controversy. And the news is not all bad. amp.theguardian.com/environment/20…
That said, an enormous amount is at stake and even a cursory look at the ISA website makes it clear that the institution itself is already deeply compromised - much of the content talks about the beginning of large scale seabed mining as if it is a fait-accompli.
That said the major corporate players in this field who are still in the game (unfortunately not covered in detail in the observer report) are also very powerful.
This is a story to watch closely over the remainder of the year - at least - as the 28th Session of the ISA plays… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
This #ExtremeWeather tweet did not age well.
The very slow moving #Biparjoy continues to advance well inland into Ragastan and remains very much a threat to over land - which was the problem with the (in many ways) similar Pakistan storm in June 2022. Which is ominous and… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
L-R Biparjoy (Western India) O3B (Bangladesh) and Guchol are lined up on the same latitude - and this probably explains why.
O3B - the one off the coast of Bangladesh was fairly short lived, but still strong enough to seed significant water vapour into the atmosphere which was… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Meanwhile #CycloneBiparjoy West was still going strong last night - long after it was expected to dissappate, probably due to it being fed by Westerly winds full of water vapour.
This cyclone originated in the same place as the Pakistan cyclone. Which was also powered by… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
There is no one at these guys are just a trio of guys whose food was stolen. This guy was clearly in charge and had a Wakie talkie and an official looking badge. Would also be helpful for the badge to be identified.
It was clear that he was in charge of whatever it was these fwits thought they were doing.
This guy tried to attack me as I was filming the assault on the woman on the ground. This is towards the end of the video.
After a police arrived Ina-Maria tried to tell them what had happened. As she had seen the woman earlier. It is possible that the attack was actually homophobic in nature not racist. As it all happened very quickly it was confusing.

This Press Conference is scheduled for a full hour. The return of @GretaThunberg to inside the UNFCCC meetings after boycotting the inside of COP26 on Glasgow is an important milestone in the struggle to address fossil fuel emissions.
Thé first speaker Tina Stege is from Marshall Islands. She talked about the debilitating results of climate change for her islands which are technically part of the United States.
At 1pm CEST in roughly 2.5 hours @GretaThunberg will return to the UNFCCC process for the first time in three years and hold a Press Conference at #BonnClimateConference.
The first press conference this morning has relatively few attendees. Chinese Youth are talking up the need for immediate and accelerating urgent action.
