What is the “Hundreth Monkey Effect,” and how does it relate to #bitcoin adoption?
Time for a 🧵
The hundredth monkey effect refers to a hypothetical social phenomenon that was popularized in the 70’s by Lyall Watson, who documented the findings of Japanese primatologists from the 1950’s.
The story goes like this:
Macaque monkeys in Japan were given sweet potatoes by the researchers that were studying them. The scientists observed that some of the monkeys learned to wash the potatoes in the river before eating them, suggesting they preferred the taste of the freshly washed food.
They observed that this behavior began to spread through the group of monkeys by observation and repetition, but unlike most food customs, it was learned by the older generation of monkeys from the younger ones that were already washing their potatoes in the rivers and ocean.
The behavior continued to spread until it appeared to reach a critical mass, and suddenly the majority of the population was washing their food in the water.
The odd thing was: it appeared that the behavior even spread to populations with no contact with the original group!
They observed that the young monkeys first taught their peers and immediate family, and that some parents that were too old were unable to adopt the new behavior.
Once the older generation died, the newest generation then learned from normal observation and imitation.
A particular quote from Lyall stands out to me:
“It may be that when enough of us hold something to be true, it becomes true for everyone.”
It doesn’t take much imagination to see how this relates to #Bitcoin.
We’re now in the time when the older generation is going to get it, or not, and there’s not much we can do to convince those that don’t get it because they will cling to the worldview they grew up with. As the older generation passes power to the younger, the paradigm shifts.
All over BT I see bitcoiners with children teaching their kids the importance of bitcoin. When I have kids, I will do the same.
These teachings will bring our behavior (saving in bitcoin) to reach a critical mass and become the norm. This is the road to hyperbitcoinization.
The hundreth monkey effect has been confirmed and debunked many times by different scientists, earning it the title of “hypothetical phenomenon.”
However, when it comes to #bitcoin, there are no borders for the effect to magically jump across. Earth is one big island.
Time is all it takes. Out with the old, in with the new. There will be a day when it is common knowledge that #bitcoin is the best money there is.
We just have to roll with the punches and survive until then.
Tick tock, next block.
Stay humble and stack sats. 🧡
