I get that #Juneteenth is a relatively new holiday for most people in the US. And the non-Blacks in my area are tripping a bit about how to approach it. So here are a few tips.
1. Don’t act like it doesn’t exist. Honor it the way you do other federal holidays. That means cancelling activities & meetings that can be cancelled.
2. Resist the urge to yell “Happy Juneteenth” to every Black person you encounter. Some of us are still figuring out how to feel about this.
3. Understand what the holiday is about - a society deceiving Black people about their freedom. That’s a cause of lament & repentance for ⚪️ ppl, not celebration.
4. If you’re White & get the day off, consider donating your day’s wages to a justice org, Black activist or creator, or youth org (if you can afford that). Give an extra tip to a working Black person.
5. Be ok with feeling awkward but don’t go all sackcloth & ashes. White performative guilt is not helpful.
6. Don’t take any of this as law because it’s my opinion in the moment when I’m still figuring out what this new authorized holiday means. I liked it better as a thing my family organically did.
