In honor of #Juneteenth2023 I just cracked open "The Purpose of Power" by Alicia Garza. Her take on power? It's about making decisions for yourself and others. Got me thinking already. 🧵1/18
There's a quote in here, "Anger is not a sustainable emotion... It has to be transformed into a deep love for the possibility of who we can be." Wow, that hits deep. 🧵2/18
Garza isn't pulling any punches. Change is tough. It's not all sunshine and rainbows, but the vision of a better world is so worth it. #ChangeIsComing 🧵3/18
Loving this from Garza: "Solidarity can never be expressed by hearing someone's pain and then turning the conversation back to yourself." Yeah, let's really LISTEN. 🧵4/18
There are truth bombs in this book about intersectionality. It's not just about representation, it's about shaking up the power dynamics and making sure no one gets left out. 🧵5/18
Garza's made it clear - if we're just perpetuating the same dynamics, we're not creating change. We've got to break the cycle. 🧵6/18
She writes, "When people come together to solve problems...Unless we are intentional about interrupting what we've learned, we will perpetuate it..." It's a wake-up call to be self-aware and intentional. 🧵7/18
Garza says: "Declaring that Black Lives Matter does not negate the significance of the lives of non-Black people..." Clearing up misconceptions about #BLM. 🧵8/18
This book is making me see systems, not just individuals. Garza says, "There are plenty of good people who do terrible things as part of their roles within systems." 🧵9/18
Powerful: "When it comes to politics, when it comes to governing, when it comes to building power, being small is something we cannot afford." No time to play small, folks. Go big or go home! 🧵10/18
I love that Garza makes a case for multiracial movements. Inclusion isn't just a moral thing, it's a strategy for change. 🧵11/18
Halfway through "The Purpose of Power", and I'm learning so much. If you're looking for a game-changing read, pick this up. 🧵12/18

Garza pushes us all to shake up power dynamics, listen more, and confront our biases. We've got work to do, but we gotta do it. People Matter!! 🧵 13/18
We've got the power to shape the world around us. Let's use it to make things better for everyone. 🧵14/18
I recently saw Billboard that says inclusion is just a word without action. Really makes you think about it. What action are you taking? 🧵15/18
I keep coming back to this: "We are fighting for a different world, and we are building new muscles to do so." Let's flex those change-making muscles, people! 🧵16/18
This book is making me think a lot. I have got to shake things up, listen deeply, and confront my/our biases. Garza's words are more relevant than ever. 🧵17/18
If you have read this book, I would love to hear your thoughts and what stuck out to you. If you haven't read it, I encourage you to do so. It's so good. 🧵18/18 Finished 😂
