Apparently one of the people on the sub is a 19 year old kid. And there is a lot of shaming going around for people having a knee jerk reaction to a bunch of rich people dying on a sub because of that.
And the narrative would be different if but for a few changes.
If he were poor and in the back seat of his best friends car as it crashed into a lake going 90 miles an hour here in rural Indiana, it would be tragic but he would be "a grown ass man that should have known better than to get in that car."
If he were black and walking down the street at night and cops beat him to death because he didn't react fast enough, or reacted too quickly he wouldn't even be a grown man. He would be "just another thug," according to the media. A danger. A threat.
If he were one of the refugees drowned by Greek authorities recently he wouldn't even be a blip on the radar. He would be one of hundreds lost in an act of cruelty as they pushed their stalled boat into a capsize. Collateral damage.
Because he is rich and paid a quarter of a million to see the graves of quite a lot of poor people, his life is somehow worth more pity, and more respect.
Do not get me wrong, absolutely none of these situations, or his, are good. They aren't situations that should be happening
But somehow he, who signed a waiver that said no more than three times that he could die, gave informed consent to hop on the death trap and see the Titanic - he's just a kid, and none of the others are. Nothing the kid fleeing danger.
Not the kid just existing near the wrong cop at the wrong time, or the kid who just had the worst luck in friends and didn't know that car ride was his last. Those aren't kids.
He is.
It's an interesting disparity.
The more I learn about #OceanGate the more I hate the CEO. He was told by an engineer that the vessel wasn't sea worthy, he fried him. He was begged by engineers not to use the submersible, he ignored it. He even showed investors diving suits that are going to do shit.
Those were his safety measures. Even if they were somehow rated for the depths they were going to (they weren't,) they couldn't get out because they are bolted into the sub.
This man flagrantly played with people's lives. In this instance it was other wealthy people that he killed. You'll note that disparity is back. The wealthy kill us with neglect and it's no big deal, it's international news if they kill each other.
Everything about this guy is just shit. I'm pissed off at that far more than any jokes about this craft, or that the rich have been eaten by the sea, or that Titanic is raising her kill ratio. Cause if he is out here doing it, there are others out here doing it.
Exploiting the same loophole and claiming to be a research vessel while just doing dark tourism for the rich. There needs to be regulations to stop this, just like there needed to be regulations to make all ships on the ocean (not just white star line ships) safer.
The government NEEDS to be up the ass of guys like this because the "free market" and those that protect their little money deities want to get rid of the regulations that exist that apparently don't reach what this asshole did. Cause apparently it wasn't illegal!
But yeah, probably won't happen. Because the folks lining up to wail the loudest for these lost rich folks? They are going to vote for mother fuckers that are going to get rid of the current regulations because capitalism I guess.
So more 19 year olds are going to die.
And nothing changes other than crocodile tears about how these folks that have no problem killing us, die due to their own hubris.

Ok, let me expand on this cause it was late last night and I didn't have the spoons.
I'm pretty sure that they're dead. With every passing moment they are gone I'm more and more sure of that fact. It sucks. It's not good. This is actually my literal nightmare scenario.
Either it filled with water or they are stuck in the bottom, in the dark, in just a pocket of air knowing that help isn't coming. It gave me a panic attack as a kid, it gives me a panic attack now. I don't wish that on anyone.
On top of that, I am 100 percent certain that the waiver was billed as "just a silly technicality," and that this little tourist excursion, which is what this is, was perfectly safe when in reality it was a time bomb. If it wasn't this dive, it was going to be another.
TW: Sexism, Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, Suicide
Bouncing off this great thread, MRAs using statistics as a cudgel to beat feminists over the head are part of the reason that those issues are not taken seriously for us.
Seriously, how can that be if the only reason they are brought up is whataboutisms to say that these issues aren't really issues because "men have it worse" with no solutions? How are they taken seriously if the only voice for them are a bunch of internet clowns that hate women?
Because the point of them bringing it up is not that they care about us. They give two shits.
Their response to suicidal ideation is "stop being a pussy." Their response to men being sexually assaulted is "men can't get raped, they want it all the time."
So this thing that looks like Bruce Wayne's garage door opener is the TV-B-Gone™. It's sold as a prank device, and comes in some 1950s style packaging that extols the virtues of a life with-out TV.
Ultimately it's pranking folks into thinking their TV is malfunctioning.
Now I did not get this for such pranking activities. I ultimately got it for work. Why?
I have #ADHD which means that the more steps there are to something, the harder it is to do or remember to do them all. I've also got arthritis which makes repetitive long trips a real pain.
There is one remote in the church that turns on all of the monitors I need to turn on for our Wednesday night community dinner, and our Sunday morning services. One outside my office, two in the fellowship hall, and one outside of the youth group room on the second floor.

I no longer care about possible government waste when it comes to public goods and services. If a library is open 24 hours a day, and the only person that uses said library is a little old lady who reads "Pride and Prejudice" from 3:15-4:45 on Tuesday, that is not waste.
If a free public bus is running at 2:00 AM and absolutely no one is on it untill 6:00 AM, that is not waste.
If there are 5 EMS vehicles run by the county on a continuous route in a rural area, but only 3 are ever occupied at any given time, the other two are not waste.
We are providing, through our taxes, a service that is to be used by anyone at any time. It's not waste. It looks like waste to the business man whose mind is only concerned with efficiency and profit, but public services are not for profit and radical efficiency.
White people: Where did the lost colony of Roanoke go?
Indigenous people: They joined us. They were hungry, they were starving, and we took them in
WP: The only clue was this mysterious word carved in a tree
IP: Yeah that's us. They left you a note.
WP: It's a mystery!
Oh hey, this blew up.
Don't give money to me, go find an indigenous person and dump money into their cash app. I'm just a mediocre white guy shit posing on the internet. It's their story.
On that note I'm muring this. Not cause I don't love y'all's takes, my phone keeps buzzing off the table
