When I mention that Christian Nationalist curricula (which are, almost to a *one*, written by folks linked to historic "segregation academies" or neo-Confederates or both) actively engage in historical denial of the horrors of chattel slavery, this is what I mean
@awkwardlefty_cj And yes, there is a very specific historic reason I use *THAT* comparison.

Here's a little history I wrote on Christian Nationalism and its involvement in "segregation academies"; as it turns out, this includes "Christian homeschooling"

A thread:

1/xthreadreaderapp.com/thread/1661537…
@awkwardlefty_cj So. tl;dr that previous thread, when desegregation happened, the first "voucher programs" came about as school systems were closed and state funding went to "segregation academies" run by historically pro-slavery churches that have gone Christian Nationalist over time

2/x
@awkwardlefty_cj And basically when the Supreme Court stepped in and said "no, goddamnit, you can't do that, no, you cannot divert federal and state tax dollars to segregation academies now FUCKING DESEGREGATE YOUR SCHOOLS", and when this eventually expanded to the IRS yanking tax-exempts,

3/x
@awkwardlefty_cj well...around this time, around the mid-70s onward, that's when you started seeing the initial pushes for Christian Nationalist "homeschooling" (which, in practice, is actually correspondence schooling, as I'll note--and yes, we'll get into things *deep*)

4/x
@awkwardlefty_cj Now, basically these programs operate in that you're sent a package of curricula and have a "satellite school" that actually issues transcripts and such; usually the publishers of curricula are historically segregation academies, and often the satellite schools are too

5/x
@awkwardlefty_cj And being institutions which were flat out designed to perpetuate white supremacy, they pushed a whole lot of historical revisionism regarding the Confederacy, and chattel slavery, and the Appropriate Role of Separation of Races Per Their Racist Interpretation Of The Bible

6/x
@awkwardlefty_cj (I'll also note, as an aside, that a lot of this historical revisionism was common in *public* schools in the South in the 1920s-1950s as the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and later on, early Christian Nationalist lobbies took over school boards in the South.)

7/x
@awkwardlefty_cj And on that note, one particular group of chuds (including Michael Farris and Doug Wilson)--both of whom have links to a Christian Nationalist, neo-Confederate group called League of the South which conducted a hostile takeover of the PCA when it tried to reform,

8/x
@awkwardlefty_cj the selfsame League of the South whom is also linked pretty heavily to the Family Research Council, and which has publicly called for the re-establishment of chattel slavery in a new Confederacy:

9/xdailykos.com/stories/2006/1…
@awkwardlefty_cj (Oh trust me neo-Confederacy and "patriot militia" paramilitiaries have been an issue in Christian Nationalism for decades upon decades but most people tend to dismiss it as A Mere Bunch Of Kooks To Be Laughed At, Much Like The Illinois Nazis In The Blues Brothers Movie)

10/x
@awkwardlefty_cj Anyways, the same Michael Farris and Doug Wilson with LOSer buddies, the same ones who helped light balefires for January 6th, and wrote that tripe defending slavery...also happen to run the largest advocacy group for Christian Nationalist correspondence schooling in the US

11/x
@awkwardlefty_cj Their particular group, interestingly, has a history of trying to deliberately shut out more inclusive home education groups from state recognition (attempting to make Christian Nationalist correspondence-schooling the only legal "homeschooling")

12/xhsislegal.com/does_hslda_wor…
@awkwardlefty_cj And, well, HSLDA also does...a lot of other advocacy, including being singlehandedly why the US is the only non-signatory to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (out of fear it'll give kids a means to fight against religiously motivated child abuse and neglect)

13/x
@awkwardlefty_cj Literally, they explicitly are for pretty much removing all civil rights for women and children, including protection via domestic violence and child protection laws

14/xbuckscountybeacon.com/2023/06/christ…
@awkwardlefty_cj And yes, as much has they may scream blue murder about how The Queers Are Ruining The Soil and The Transgender Folks And Drag Queens Are Coming For Your Kids...

A fair amount of what HSLDA does is literal, honest-to-Lucifer, grooming of kids

15/xrightwingwatch.org/report/unsport…
@awkwardlefty_cj I am Not Kidding re grooming.

HSLDA gives actual courses on how to hide signs of religiously motivated child abuse and neglect when the neighbours call CPS (despite Christian Nationalists' best efforts to keep kids away from mandatory reporters)

16/xdailykos.com/stories/2007/8…
@awkwardlefty_cj Here's a story of someone who was raised under that, and was literally groomed for accepting abuse

(These are also the lovely sorts that Moms for Liberty also tend to support, as an aside.)

17/xbuckscountybeacon.com/2023/06/why-am…
@awkwardlefty_cj So yeah, thoroughly unpleasant people.

And yes, pretty much Christian Nationalist correspondence-schooling started right around the time these segregation academies started losing their tax exempts, and as states legalized unschooling and legit homeschooling

18/x
@awkwardlefty_cj And Christian Nationalists tended to do hostile takeovers of processes (just as Moms for Liberty is doing now, in a redux of what AFA and FRC did more directly in the 80s and 90s and 2000s in trying to hijack school boards from within as "stealth candidates")

19/x
@awkwardlefty_cj And so it's actually *difficult* in a lot of the country to really find inclusive homeschooling or any home education that's *not* Christian Nationalist correspondence-schooling (which again, is usually linked in some way or another to a historic segregation academy)

20/x
@awkwardlefty_cj It's also never, ever a good look for a movement when there are full out activist groups (which support *responsible* home education) who have compiled dossiers on abusive practices in Christian Nationalist correspondence schooling

21/xresponsiblehomeschooling.org
@awkwardlefty_cj And this curricula isn't the only slavery-denialist curricula you see in Christian Nationalist circles; BJU, A-Beka, ACE/School of Tomorrow, and yes, Doug Wilson's ACCS curricula ALL promote slavery denial and Confederacy denial to a non-negligible degree

22/x
@awkwardlefty_cj And realistically this should be considered as part of a whole-ass strategy by Christian Nationalists to strip people of legal protections and thus perpetuate the Christian Nationalist Culture of Abuse

As today is Juneteenth, and there are going to be an uncomfy number of chuds who are going to engage in *massive* pro-Confederacy historical denial to try very hard to deny the actual cause of the Civil War, I think it's time for a teach-in

A thread:

1/x
And in this case, I'm going to post the actual reasons that the South seceded, from the words of the secessionists themselves, in their own secession documents

Note: Contrary to what you may have learned in Southern revisionist curricula, it wasn't "state's rights"

2/x
From the secession document of the 1st of the traitor states, South Carolina, starting at around the 2nd page, explicitly listed not only hostility towards chattel slavery by the North but resistance to the Fugitive Slave Acts as a reason battlefields.org/learn/primary-…

It should be noted that "Blacks for Trump" group has...rather the interesting (and "chequered to the point a harlequin troupe would point out that's Way Too Much") history

They have a history of being even cultier cultists than the usual MAGAt, as I'll note below

1/x
So as is...all too common for my posts :D, this does require some backstory, and some discussion of a particular coercive religious movement targeting African-Americans deeply linked with white "sovereign citizen" groups (yes, seriously)

Buckle in, we're going for a ride

2/x
So. There's always been a branch of the sovcit movement that's pushed their particular brand of Genuine Frontier Nonsense on (usually highly coercive) religious grounds, usually wanting to create their own (very, very white, and Christian Nationalist) theocracy

@EverythingDoubt @chrisderose @DAvallone @BeschlossDC @layneashley222 The fact that Lee ever got the chance to escape from a military tribunal with his head still attached to his ears is also a damnable mistake (and the same goes for Davis and all the traitors)

(What went on with Lee would be described as a personality cult nowadays)
@EverythingDoubt @chrisderose @DAvallone @BeschlossDC @layneashley222 Like. I'll just put my point out like this

I'm going to give another example a bit later in historyr than the Civil War as to why you never, ever, *EVER* leave anything to memorialize chuds by

This starts back all the way into the 20s

1/x
@EverythingDoubt @chrisderose @DAvallone @BeschlossDC @layneashley222 So you had a failed painter that tried to start a far-right politi-club, and they basically plotted a coup because they were sick of all those sanctions that got put in place after the Kaiser had his ass handed to him

And, well, their attempted coup descended into a riot

And in today's other thread on International Pat's In A Box Day (yes, y'all get a two-fer), basically a minor history of the rise and fall of what's basically the ur-Christian-Nationalist media (at least in the sense of non-radio-era televangelists)

1/x
And I do have to specify "non-radio-era", of note, because in the radio era you DID have actual Christian Nationalists on air, like Aimee Semple McPherson (who all but declared war on the FCC and its predecessors) and "Father" Coughlin

2/x
And it was actually Coughlin's early forays into hate radio that led the major broadcasters of the time (NBC--soon to split into NBC and ABC, CBS, Mutual) to band together into an informal agreement to not carry televangelism unless from an official denomination rep

As we're all celebrating International Pat's In A Box Day, it's worth noting that the Christian Coalition--a major Christian Nationalist group in its day--was largely defanged in the early 90s along with several other groups by having its tax exempt pulled for electioneering

1/x
Pretty much in its time, the Christian Coalition was in the same places as Focus on the Family, Family Research Council, American Family Association, et al.

One of their innovations was printing partisan voter's guides and distributing in churches a week before elections

2/x
It was this that ultimately got them in trouble with the IRS, and--in the 90s--the tax exemptions of the Christian Coalition (which then operated as a 501(c)3 organization) were pulled, forcing it to reorganize as a PAC (which then supported Pat Robertson's bid for Pres.)

@brucewilson And arguably that particular imagery goes even more *directly* to Nazis, as one of the popular recruiting efforts by Nazis targeting monarchist Germans, etc. was the "stab in the back myth" (the claim that Jewish people had sabotaged the war effort for The Evulz)

1/x
@brucewilson And because two of the most notable opponents of Nazis involved Jewish people (who did not want to be unalived) and Communists, eventually Nazis claimed communism itself was a Jewish plot (particularly in 1935 Nazi party congress): encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/fil…

2/x
@brucewilson So this is a trope with an old, and *EXCEPTIONALLY* nasty, history.

Christian Nationalists would also later claim civil rights movements were a "Communist plot" (even heard this from my own parents, regarding MLK in particular, pretty much my whole life until their deaths)
