1/n A few details about Balinese #Hinduism that may validate the Dvaita/Traitvada Vedanta claim that Shripada Adi Shankara's Advaita Vedanta is a post-#Buddhist deviation from old Hinduism. Bali has Hindu culture dating back to at least 8 BCE.
2/n Bali's Hinduism has no parampara from Adi Shankara, Sriman Ramanuja or Acharya Madhva because Vedic tradition reached there prior to all three. Bali has remained wary of "new" trends from outside. E.g., recently ISKCON's activities have been legally restricted there.
3/n The 1st interesting point about Balinese ontology is that Purusha and Prakriti are eternal and separate, but united together. It is a couple called Rwa Bhineda, analogous to Yin and Yang. The eternal difference of Purusha-Prakriti firmly rejects Shankarite Advaita, they said.
4/n The 2nd interesting point is that Moksha is about the Jivatma realizing the wisdom of its eternal relationship with God, with other Jivas and with Prakriti. They call this Tri-Hita-Karana. This again plants it firmly in Dvaita/Traitvada territory.
5/n This is based on conversations with a couple of Balinese religious scholars connected to Warmadewa and Udayana Universities. Authentic books on Balinese Hinduism are out of print. They ventured that their Hinduism resonates more with Dvaita, although it predates Madhva, etc.
6/n A great deal of Balinese Hinduism revolves around the Pancha Mahabhutas and the sambandha between the microcosm and macrocosm. Classic Purva Mimamsa. They also honor a Rishi Markandeya who came with settlers and transplanted the religion there. Arsha tradition matters there.
7/n Bali gives a glimpse into what a Dharmic Rashtra might look like. There is Varnashrama, the public space is aesthetic and ritualized, there is an unenforced uniformity at the level of homestead and one can see a daily sadhana in every home or storefront, university, etc.
8/n The youth are typically enthusiastic, culturally self-aware and nationalistic. Globalization & a thriving tourism industry has not Westernized them. Great emphasis on scientific education, and professors and students try to view everything through the lens of Hinduism.
9/n Women are independent, educated, and play a prominent social role in all facets of life. Fully supported by traditional Hindu patriarchy there. Women often pioneer Hindu nationalist causes in society. #Kashmir Hindu genocide raised at recent university campus in Bali.
10/n A lot of Balinese culture and society reminds one of Japan, too. Yet, average Balinese views the 3 years of WW2 Japanese occupation and forced labor with distaste. This relationship needs to be repaired, and I believe that is being worked on.
11/n Average Balinese views Indian Hindus with friendliness. However, siyne COVID the number of Indian tourists has increased sharply and respect has declined. Desi tendency to scowl at people you pay for services as if (s)he is definitely trying to sucker you is 1 reason.
12/n Even in small villages one sees Balinese always keeping themselves busy, never lazing around. Early risers, during Amrit Vela. Even old retired ladies will open their own small business. Entrepreneurial spirit. But generally simple and straightforward but polite etiquette.
13/n Sexual mores are different from desh. Arranged marriage is not the norm and dating is standard. This is traditional and not a modern phenomenon.
Diet includes fish, eggs and meat but almost no dairy.
14/14 Last point about worship - agnihotra and havan is rare and dhoopa doubles up as agni in offerings.

Brief profile of Ismail Royer, who has been appointed by @realDonaldTrump admin to White House Religious Liberty Commission:
1. White male convert to Islam. 2. Went to Pak to train with LeT 3. Actually involved in terrorist ops & fought & killed Indian soldiers in J&K.
(Cont..)
4. Captured & imprisoned in India. 5. US convinced Maunmohan that their white jihadi would complete his 20 year sentence in the US. 6. But in 4-5 years he was released a free American. Being white means you get a light rap + Lawrence of Arabia CREDIT for your jihadi experience.👇🏽
7. Since then he lives in a farmhouse in MD, married another white lady whom he converted to Islam, and bore him 8 or 9 children. 8. His life as a free man has been dedicated to a mission against Hindus. 9. But he never opposes Christians.

1/n US federal law and state govts have for years added a surcharge to ALL elec customer bills. That money is given to solar cos to install panels free of cost to those who decide to sign up. They will still pay monthly fees - only installation is free, & the contract is binding.
2/n Now this federal mandate to move homes to solar was *strengthened* by Trump 1.0, contrary to public rhetoric. Speaking with a solar co manager about this, he said it has been a long term strategy to free up a grid capacity for AI data centers. Been in the works for years.
3/n The idea is that homes with solar (+battery) can become self-sustaining AND contribute excess output to the grid. The problem is that solar installations stop once an area is saturated - because not all homes are actually fit to uave it installed, even if they want to opt in.
1/n French anthropologist Emmanuel Todd's theory correlating prevalent family structures with a society's susceptibility to various religious or political ideologies is thought-provoking:
2/n His classification of family structures, government & religion is useful to compare against dharma shastra systems of gotra, jaati, kula, varna, cross-yuga sampradaya and rashtra. The attention to detail in criteria of marriage, inheritance & accountability determines a lot.
3/n This also throws up interesting questions on the ideological effects of urbanization, Westernization, etc. And within the West, the partial breakdown of an anomic nuclear family system into an African type unstable polygamy is driving fundamental political changes.
2/n A brutally exploitative colonial power can go into psychological tailspin after losing the power to do that to others. Genuinely appears at least a section of the Anglosphere & West in general is going through this even though they have overrun & still populate 4 continents..
3/n This loss-of-dominance trauma can be seen even with colonial compadre elites within India - constant outrage, whining and airs about past "glory" of their extremely parochial identity within India...
@DainikBhaskar reporter @rahulreporter4 Sharma puts out a crazy tweet belittling lower castes & stoking UC grievance over reservation policy.
Same newspaper's editor @pantlp stokes anti-Brahmin outrage over dubious story of slapping Dalit schoolboy...
2/2 As it usually is in all such hyped-up cases, within 72 hours of the news cycle, the dubious story gets exposed and is admitted even by Leftist portals that stoke the flames to begin with:
3/3 Increasingly clear that "Dalit" anti-"Brahminism" "caste atrocity" propagandists & the new, strange uber-"trad" steppe Brahmin-supremacist edgelords that have arisen on SM the last 4 years are both batting for the same team.
1/n Quick thread on #Afghanistan's indigenous Hindus & the present state of the Pakhtuns. Based on speaking with a Hindu lady who lived and worked there, speaks Dari and Pashto, did several field projects there, & was invited to speak at US State Dept. on security-related issues.
2/n Most Afghan Hindus are indigenous to Afghanistan, in the sense that they are the oldest inhabitants there at this point. There are some who went there from India only a few centuries ago, and are no less "Afghan", but most have been there prior to all others known today.
3/n Some indigenous Afghan Hindus are classified as Tajik & even Uzbek. More educated in today's times, & follow Persianate culture, i.e., they are basically Persian & Turkic Hindus.
But majority of native Afghan Hindus are Pakhta (#Sanskrit Pakta), or Pakhtun/Pashtun...
