We do not know how to stop population decline

lindynewsletter.beehiiv.com/p/will-world-l…
One of the defining features of our current age is declining fertility rates. Once society achieves a certain threshold of economic well-being the society than begins to have a lot less children.

Large swathes of the planet is under replacement including China, The US, Europe,… https://t.co/H8CJkZvcKOtwitter.com/i/web/status/1…

Once you start looking into why people have less children you realize no one really knows why this is happening.

This is a phenomenon that is occurring in radically diverse countries like Iran, China, Switzerland and Poland.
It's not just theoretical now. People who are in their 30s and 40s now see half of their friends or classmate group opt-out of having kids.

There's a growing cultural split between parents and non-parents happening today
Some people will point to different reasons for this happening but they all fall apart under close scrutiny

1) People can't afford kids.

That does't make sense. The world is richer now than ever before.
Image
Image
2) The government is helping society enough

That reason doesn't hold up to scrutiny either. Lots of Euro countries are spending a lot of money on raising TFR and none of it is working. Image
3) Society isn't as religious as before

It is true that very, very extreme religious groups like the Amish or orthodox jews are reproducing at a higher rate than the population. but those are niche groups.

If you look at other religious countries like Iran or Bangladesh you'll… https://t.co/FMooUzX4njtwitter.com/i/web/status/1…

4) Women working is the issue

Again, this sounds persuasive until you look into countries where women have a lot of flexibility or are culturally shielded by work. Then this argument falls apart. Image
This is the new normal and the market is adjusting.

New construction that includes floor plans in the cities are not for families anymore. They are for singe people or for roommates.

The demand isn't there for families

What are other consequences for population declines.

some of them are obvious.

1) Many universities will go bankrupt as fewer students exist. A small number of money-making colleges will get richer

2) Tinder unveiled a new $500 a month option. That's something only someone… https://t.co/XyShBm9yOYtwitter.com/i/web/status/1…

There's something that happens to you when you have kids that changes your vision and values. Your first priority when you have kids is your kids. Pets become diminished in importance. Something inside of you changes. Image
there are all of these social movements happening these days. Many of them seem excessive and overbearing.

When you don't have kids, you start focusing on pets. You focus on a lot of external issues like animal rights or your perceived societal injustices

you don't have a… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
So as more and more people stop reproducing, we should be expecting more social movement issues to be prominent. The macros takes precedence over the micro

What that will be? I have no idea. I assume things like Environmentalism or other issues.
One of the side effects of Celibacy in religions is transmitting empathy from the micro to the macro

In Catholicism every priest has to be celibate

In Orthodox the bishops have to be celibate.

You're not here to serve your kids. You're here to serve the world
Women without kids are going to have a lot of discretionary income and control much of the entertainment preferences Image
Universities have begun cutting programs

This is just the beginning

Many won't survive

There are two ways to rise in the world.

Force your will on the world, or hold your position until the world shifts in your favor.

Survive in case you get lucky

Americans are experiencing a profound shift in priorities, traditional sources of meaning like patriotism, religion, community, and family have collapsed and have been replaced by a singular focus on money and economic survival.Image

There's an alternative to the race. Instead of competing, you can survive, avoid terminal risks, and wait for the system to break Image

We aren’t living in a culture of literacy anymore, we’re back in oral culture.

From that lens, everything makes sense: short attention spans, virality, popularity, who makes money, even populist politics all follow orality

Lets study the oral rules

lindynewsletter.beehiiv.com/p/the-return-o…
Books are great, they can change your life. But people are not reading books anymore. They are ways for an author to get speaking fees or appear on podcasts to get famous. They are business cards of the intellectual class Image
Image
There is a complete collapse of literacy happening right now. Replaced by short form video, tweets, podcasts, IG, youtube, tiktok, newsletters, etc.

everyone can feel whats going on Image

The future happens in Japan first.

They experience social trends a decade before others.

In the 90s, Japanese tourists flooded the globe, and then stopped. Japanese travelers got bored.

Today, few Japanese hold passports.

Is mass travel doomed?

lindynewsletter.beehiiv.com/p/japan-gets-t…
it's amazing how many trends happened in Japan first.

1) Birthrate decline

2) Country agin

3) Public debt

4) A culture of aloneness

5) Plummeting Marriage rate

6) Interest in Robotics

7) Hyper urbanization and left behind rural areas

8) restriction on immigration Image

The Japanese travel boom happened in the 1980s and 1990s.

People thought we would see Japanese Tourists forever

But then it stopped.

We assume mass travel will be here forever. But what it doesn't. What if its just a trend? Image

Prescriptions for Ozempic are up nearly 600% over six years. It works. People are losing weight.

But that's not the whole story.

We see unexpected changes with reduced pleasure-seeking and risk-taking behaviors.

It modifies your personality

These drugs are being tested at a massive scale right now. Turns out people have lost interest in their previous interests, like gambling or drinking alcohol or sex drive.

We don't really know what's going on. These were unexpected side effects Image

but it brings up an interesting philosophical question.

How much do you want to suppress your Pleasure Drive?

The same neural pathways that make you overeat also make you start companies, chase lovers, create art, take risks. Ozempic doesn't distinguish between those

The Art of Not Getting Fired

If you are useful, it doesn't mean you are valued.

Useful employees are susceptible to being fired depending on company health.

That's an entirely different set of metrics for determining value.

The useful vs value frame belongs in the classic workplace text library alongside Parkinsons law, peter principle, the gervais principle and the 4HL Image

Today, we’re often advised that true health requires intense self-reflection and therapy, with an emphasis on looking back. But this perspective is actually quite modern.

Ancient literature warns against looking back.

You don't have to look back

Modern therapy as we know it is a new experiment.

Not even a hundred years old. More like a decade or two. Of everyone being required to deeply look back Image
