So many lies and misleading statements from Doug Ford at his press conference today.
He really wants people to believe that this is all about helping the little guy get a nice little affordable home.
Thread 🧵 on the lies Ford is repeating at every press conference…
1/ “we’re going to continue building the 1.5 million homes…”
Ford’s task force said 1.5M homes are needed in 10 years. That is 150,000 per year. Ontario’s housing starts are 1/3 behind that pace! And Ford’s own report says the Greenbelt land is not needed to meet the targets.
2/ “we’re going to build 1.5M homes for *average* people.”
The homes that get built on Greenbelt land are for millionaires. “Average people” cannot afford $3 Million for a house. The land is also nowhere near transit and services that “average people” need.
3/ “the previous government, when they changed it (the Greenbelt) 17 times, they did it for their buddies to build mega mansions…”
The Liberals CREATED the 2 million acre Greenbelt in 2005. Over 12 years, only 17 small adjustments out of hundreds of requests were approved…
4/ those 17 adjustments totalled around 340 acres of land on the edges of the Greenbelt. Ford just carved out 7400 acres!!! And, much of the land is NOT just Greenbelt border adjustments - Duffins Rouge is the biggest chunk of land, and it is a massive agricultural preserve.
5/ “there are no mega mansions on this property”
Complete nonsense. Look at the types of homes that get built! These are $3M-$5M.
6/ “they changed it for a golf dome and a Jiffy Lube…”
This comment destroys Ford’s entire narrative!
Look at the Mr. Lube that he is referring to. This was a small adjustment to the edge of a Lowe’s parking lot!
No one was getting rich on these small adjustments.
7/ “we’re changing it (the Greenbelt) to build homes for people who need it…”
Just complete nonsense!
The biggest housing needs in Ontario right now are rentals and subsidized/affordable units.
Ford’s plans are for expensive detached houses nowhere near transit or services.
8/ “… for the hard working working class that can’t afford a home”
Again, any working class person needs lower cost housing near transit and services. That is the exact opposite of estate homes on an agricultural preserve on the outskirts of Pickering!
9/
Most of the land Ford carved out of the Greenbelt is NOT connected to infrastructure and ready to build. It is estimated that 25 years (and billions) are needed to get the land prepared. This scheme is only about enriching land flippers - it won’t help the housing crisis!
10/
One last thing - and maybe the most important:
There is no evidence that someone went out and bought Greenbelt land just weeks before the province re-zoned it for $8.3B in gains!
There were 600+ applications over 12 years.
The insider trading part of this IS the scandal.

Doug Ford’s press conference today was another disaster. Just a bunch of false statements, ignorant claims, and misleading talking points.
Thread 🧵 on Ford’s ridiculous response to a question about Greenbelt land flippers and the Auditor General’s investigation:
1/
Not the most critical point, but Ford saying "I don't interfere in the private sector" is nonsense.
Ford gives billions to private companies like EV battery makers (subsidies) and home builders (cutting fees), and his government interfered by re-zoning the Greenbelt land.
2/
Ford claims that this isn't in the Auditor General's scope, saying "she has to look for value-for-money".
Ford is simply wrong. The Auditor General Act defines multiple responsibilities, including TRANSPARENCY and ACCOUNTABILITY and the Environmental Bill of Rights.
This map showing the 413 route and the Greenbelt is all you need to know about why Doug Ford wants to separate Brampton and Caledon from Mississauga...
Seems like the media ONLY want to cover the Chinese influence story at the Federal level, but ignore it if Trudeau isn't involved.
THREAD 🧵 on Chinese influence tied to Doug Ford's Ontario PC Party, specifically 2 names:
Ted Zhou and Zhaoan Sui
1/ Ted Zhou
- Attended Trudeau fundraiser in 2016, but mostly Conservative fundraisers since then
- CEO of Evertrust (developer w/ projects in Niagara & Bracebridge)
- Built companies worth over $2.6B in China
- Founded dozens of Canadian companies, including 10+ influence groups
2/ Zhaoan Sui
- Runs the Canada Gansu Federation of Chamber of Commerce (CGFCC) and other influence groups
- Family runs Global Education Mihome Corporation (GEM), which operates Ace Acumen Academy (private college tied to St. Clair College) and also builds residences
The wedding photographer captured lots of photos showing Carmine Nigro with a seat at Doug Ford's table (with Cortellucci and Madeleine Bodenstein) at the reception, and right in front of Ron Taverner at the ceremony.
When asked why he needs to open up the Greenbelt for developers, Doug Ford lies his face off like no politician I’ve ever seen!!!
(Thread 🧵 )
1) "This so-called Greenbelt"
Doug Ford is pretending like the Liberal government randomly chose 2 Million acres of land and slapped a Greenbelt label on it with no actual purpose to the specific areas chosen.
This is false. It took years to sort out.
2) "They changed it 17 times to suit their developer buddies"
There were small adjustments, but those added up to ONLY 370 acres (out of 2 Million!). One example was 5 acres for a power plant. Another was where half of an old building was on Greenbelt and half wasn't.
Amazing how Canada's media will immediately assume every possibly Trudeau connection in the world is sending him money, but have entirely moved on from Doug Ford stories where billionaire developers actually gave his family envelopes of money.
