One thing I noticed about Starfield is the character smiles have an issue with the orbicularis oculi muscle not contracting to give a "Duchenne smile".
Image
Image
When you smile and this muscle doesn't contract, you get a "fake smile" or a "liars smile". Image
Here is a good example of the difference from a paper () researchgate.net/figure/A-Magni…
Image
This muscle here has to contract for a smile to read as a genuine smile. The cheek apples should also rise, otherwise you look like you are actively resisting the smile, giving a constipated look. Image
This smile probably bugs you for some reason you can't put your finger on as will. Allow me.

This is the zygomaticus major muscle. It contracts when you smile, pulling the corners of the mouth up towards the Zygomatic process.

But here it isn't Image
If you activate the buccinator muscles without the zygomatic muscles you get this.
(The masterful Anthony Starr)
András Arató is famous for his smile. It appears his orbicularis oculi doesn't contract very far even with a genuine smile, resulting in that classic "dead inside" meme.
The crows feet suggest the muscle is tense, but it just doesn't seem to go as far as your average joe. Image
The zygomaticus major is here, and tense enough to create the nasolabial fold, but not lift the sides of his mouth as much as the buccinator pulls his lips back.

(Bless you András) Image
See what I mean?

I am not sure what solution they are using for their faces- if it facial capture fed into bones or blend shapes, but it definitely needs a manual tweak pass to get those smiles working.

It's just creepy.
I do see movement in the orbicularis oculi, and crows feet so they are in the set up... but they don't engage in coordination with the mouth.

Quite often the mouth moves and the cheek apples follow a bit, but they don't reach far up enough for the mouth motion.
Also, for the love of god people, stop rolling the eyes around in the sockets without moving the upper eyelid to cover the upper eye white.

The upper whites of the eyes are only exposed on humans when we have a fight or flight response.
We open our eyes wide to allow more light in. This means we are either terrified or about to attack. Image
The only time the upper eye whites should be exposed is when you pull out a fucking gun or if they do. Image
To fix this needs a little code, but the upper eyelid stays just above the pupil as the eye rolls up and down.
See?
The upper eyelid moves relative to the pupil.
Exposing the upper whites of the eyes should be intentional.
Note how Margot exposes just a little white at the start, but it is relative to the pupil, as she looks around the upper eyelid follows it.
Upper eye white exposure is a choice of the performance. It shouldn't be a symptom of your character rig just tracking the player camera.
Aaaaanyway, I hope that helps.

@UnknowableEnby Joking aside, Todd clearly isn't enjoying this one photo session.
Or, yunno, throw a few tens of thousand of dollars at me. Who am I to stop you?
Good night folks.
@pixelnostalgia A bunch of people across several departments have to coordinate and have the money and time to do it right.
@pixelnostalgia And the odds of them all knowing both human facial anatomy, expressions and visual comunication queues isn't high.

Played Mass Effect 3 legendary edition last night for the first time, and it reminded me that I think this series can teach you a lot about space.

No, not outer space, the use of physical space in games.
The Mass Effect Series contains a lot of space between functional, intractable gameplay. Empty space. Big space. Huge areas of absolutely nothing but jogging.
Stepping away from the combat zones, I want to focus just on the experiences you have in the Citadel and upon The Normandy itself in each game.

It's a lot of jogging. A LOT of jogging.

A reminder that one symptom of #adhd is task paralysis. You are unable to start a task, regardless of motivation or importance of the task.
You WANT to do it, you HAVE to do it and you are telling yourself to do it... but the body simply doesn't respond.
It's not a case of being lazy or unmotivated, or not caring. You usually care a LOT and it can feel extremely frustrating and often terrifying that you are not in control.
Motivational talks don't help, as it isn't a problem with motivation.

It is an issue with the chemical pathways between the part of the brain that plans tasks and the part that initiates tasks.

A common #ADHD symptom is starting hobbies with great enthusiam and then suddenly dropping them.
The dopamine deficiency causes us to chase dopamine, and the initial rush of a hobby, including the research, shopping for supplies and imagining the results in dopamine.
However, that wears off, and the amount of reward given by the hobby itself isn't enough to sustain that craving. And so a new hobby calls.

There can be a lot of financial strain as well as guilt associated with this behaviour.
ADHD isn't really a lack of focus, we actually have LASER LIKE FOCUS called "hyperfocus". It is the inability to consciously stear that focus where we need it to go.

TTRPG mechanics discussion?

Okay then.

Let's talk about dice as attribute type systems.
One of the great shames of DND is it doesn't use all the pretty dice fully. And we all love collecting dice sets. Holy fuck do I own a lot of dice.

Enter statistic as dice based systems.
The concept is simple, you have a die type assigned to each attribute. So you may have D6 Strength or D10 Intelligence.

You roll your assigned dice and the higher the number the better.

This has a naturally mental arithmetic free mechanic, with the slow down being dice picking

Let's talk about a problem I see on #Warhammer miniature videos of late: The Need for Speed.
When you are new to miniature painting and gaming, you are faced with a number of mental health related challenges that you may not have encountered before.

Miniature painting can both help and highlight issues you have.
Painting an army when you have no experience can be intimidating, stressful and frustrating for most people, but when you have underlying struggles, they can sharply come into focus.

Okay so lemme just drop a serious lesson about game design for this whole trending thing.
Why is this the ideal design and can we boil it down further.

Yes, we can. Image
This design is simply a difficulty slider.

That's it.

You have a choice at every single stage to make your life harder or easier by picking a direction.
With dungeon levels, the idea is that the deeper you go, the deadlier it becomes.

As you press on, your opponents get harder and your resources are used up.

Reversing your direction takes you back to a safe space with resources.
