Media shapes our perception. Hollywood does plenty of damage with their types. One type that does not damage but is steady is the Aspirational Upper Middle Class Wife. 🧵
Upper Middle Class is an achievable upper class slot for middle/working class members. It’s what they strive for as Upper class is out of reach or sight (thanks Paul Fussell). It’s aspirational and mass media geared towards this class and those who aspire to it uses these models
It was a small class but has grown with time as our economy shrinks the broad middle class and the downwardly mobile become working but many become UMC. This is a huge post 1970s trend. It’s golden age for security & purchasing power was the late ‘80s and ‘90s.
Original post used a poster woman for this AUMCW role: Sela Ward. Ward was a beauty, and aged spectacularly. She didn’t look Shakira Hot but a timeless, classy beauty. Also looked/sounded intelligent as if she could be a college grad who could work but didn’t because you made $
The UMC is full of single income households where mom could work but Opted Out. NY Times first noted this in 2003 reflecting the ‘90s trend of successful households where mom opted out but they still were UMC households.
Female viewers could see themselves as a smart, pretty wife with a successful, desirable husband who conversed with her as an equal about interesting things. Not just arm candy for display. Ward played adults with serious things to do (and a bohemian).
Sela Ward & this type sells a package: beautiful, sexy but not crass or trashy. There is an elegance. Thin, great legs, pretty face & overwhelmingly played by brunettes. They age well. Classy moms. You know the lead still burns with love & passion for his wife 25 years later.
A perfect example is Bridget Moynihan. She played the employed, charming young wife of Big on Sex & The City. Big couldn’t commit to Carrie but he did for this. Fits the AUMCW profile Sela Ward set up. Beautiful but looks smart. Classy, not trashy.
They tried casting Moynihan as a trashier, bitchy beauty in Coyote Ugly, and it fell flat. Men saw the beauty, and they were not buying her being a brawler. That is wife material, not fight breaker.
Moynihan best played the Aspirational UMC Wife in John Wick. Fools say “Wick rampaged over a dog.” No. He rampaged because the woman who he did the impossible to escape the mob underground for died. He literally pledged a life debt just to play house for one woman he loved
Moynihan plays these roles: beautiful wife, Asst District Attorney, etc because she is so classically beautiful that all of America thinks Tom Brady traded down wifing up a >checks notes< Victoria’s Secret model. Classy, pretty and smart looking!
The Aspirational UMC Wife is *not* a trophy wife. Perfect contrast is Laura Harring vs. Sofia Vergara. Harring played beautiful wives like Vergara but the sophistication difference is noticeable. On the screen, Harring can be calculating or sophisticated and it is believable
Sela Ward is the gold standard. America’s UMC & strivers are more Asian now, so we will see who Hollywood casts to fill this role. Even in an age of declining marital rates, people aspire to that life & all that comes with it; including a pretty, classy wife who can think.

If you’re over 30, you know Oreo cookies taste worse now. Forget that there is less filling in all Oreos. The creme filled center is significantly chalkier and worse. They changed the creme filling. It was to go kosher and end the century long blood feud with Hydrox 🧵
Hydrox came first, then Oreo. Oreo had superior marketing and did taste better. Why? Oreo used lard for its filling. Hydrox was kosher certified. Oreo dominated sandwich cookie demand for decades but Hydrox held on due to that tiny kosher market. That all changed in the ‘90s
Oreo’s market share did not start to dominate until after WW2. Some say it was better tasting cookies. True. Some say it was Hydrox always focusing on “original” in their ads vs. the taste and experience. Also true. Check this terrible ‘80s Hydrox ad
@verymoisturized posted a poll asking if this ass is big. Interesting insight into cultural change and the effects of TikTok and Instagram. Voting was overwhelmingly in favor of big. Still 30% said no. Why?
Quick analysis: it has pop and is well sculpted. It’s not wide. It’s like a perfect sports booty. Combo of great genes & good workout regimen. A generation ago, the vote would have been even more in favor of saying Big. But today’s eyes are different
Today’s Twitter users have: 1. Seen media memeing much bigger asses as the definition of big 2. Rise of more women leaning into sport booty look 3. IG & TikTok algos showcasing much bigger asses in a never-ending feed 4. General rise in obesity creating a nation of fat asses
Have you heard a parent complain about Boomer grandparents? It’s a common thing now. It’s bad enough that even Redditors have noticed.
Now not all Boomers are like this. A decade ago this Boomer wrote how she didn’t care to have grandchildren, which would’ve been ahead of the Boomer curve but foreshadowed their selfish behavior. huffpost.com/entry/dont-wan…
Now the pattern seems to be if a couple has a kid and there are 4 Boomer grandparents, one side will be invested, engaged and behave as prior generations did.
The problem is the other side. Lack of engagement, lack of visits despite close proximity, broken promises, etc.
With the alarmism about retirement savings, are the Boomers in bad shape? Media blurbs and surveys say yes. It’s not the entire picture and part of it is classification of retirement savings. The media push is to funnel more $ into the market for finance to scoop fees 🧵
The media paints scary pictures by saying the avg Boomer has $112K saved for retirement. Don’t take that at face value. Many have zero saved for a reason. marketwatch.com/story/heres-ho…
Another source says $200K for avg retirement savings. This is wild since Boomers enjoyed the stock market bull runs of multiple decades. Not all Boomers benefited from the neoliberal econ system so there were some losers due to trade/immigration policy. moneywise.com/retirement/do-…
Fun read about the #Manson murders, the ‘60s and Hollywood. Intel Agencies get plenty of space, too. There is a short section that every #JFK assassination conspiracy theorist & denier should read: the chapter on the incredible Dr. West
Dr. Louis Jolyon West has quite the Wikipedia entry. Son of Ukrainian Jewish immigrants, he hustled hard to receive special Army Medical training, get to Colonel in the air force, become chair of psychiatry at University of Oklahoma… en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Jol…
And was involved in every major brainwashing/cult court thing in American history except the Manson trial. Dr. West was a paid CIA contractor in the MKUltra program. He received copious $ via CIA fronts. He saved correspondence.
How bad is it for Catholics? How corrupt & gay is the institution? Read “In The Closet of The Vatican” to learn about an org that serves its internal gay hierarchy & leaves parishioners to suffer the consequences of bad institutional behavior. As a Catholic, it hurts to read🧵
Readers will be angry because of its implications for all abuse scandals. The author doesn’t downplay gay abuse scandals being 90% of abuse unlike American media because he is a progressive pro-gay but wants to focus on hypocrisy of gay homophobes in the church
The higher one goes in the hierarchy, the gayer it is. One insider estimates the Vatican to be 80% gay. This has implications for promotions, which we will see later. Pope Francis’ Synod on the Family was run by “the most open and gay-friendly cardinals”.
