How do tariffs work [a breakdown]

Tariffs are taxes imposed by a government on imported goods. They are typically applied as a percentage of the good’s value and serve to make foreign products more expensive than similar domestic products. Here's a breakdown of how tariffs work and their effects on trade, businesses, consumers, and government revenue:

1. Mechanics of a Tariff
When a country imports goods, the importing company or distributor pays a tariff to the government. For example, if the U.S. imposes a 10% tariff on imported electronics, a $1,000 laptop imported from another country would cost an importer $1,100 (the original $1,000 price plus a $100 tariff).
The importer often passes this additional cost on to consumers by raising the retail price. So, in this case, consumers might pay more for the imported product than they would have without the tariff.

2. Types of Tariffs
Ad Valorem Tariffs: Charged as a fixed percentage of the imported good’s value, like the 10% example above.
Specific Tariffs: Charged as a set fee per unit of the imported item, such as $1,000 per vehicle, regardless of the vehicle's price.
Compound Tariffs: Combine both ad valorem and specific tariffs, charging a percentage of the value plus a set amount per unit.

3. Purpose of Tariffs
Protect Domestic Industries: By making imported goods more expensive, tariffs aim to encourage consumers to buy domestic products instead, which can help protect local businesses and industries from foreign competition.
Generate Government Revenue: Tariffs bring in revenue for the government. Historically, tariffs were a major revenue source for many governments, although today they are a relatively minor source of income for developed nations.
Trade Leverage and Policy: Tariffs can be used as a tool to negotiate trade policies or influence foreign nations. By adjusting tariffs, governments can pressure trading partners or protect specific sectors as part of a broader trade strategy.

4. Effects of Tariffs
Higher Prices for Consumers: Since importers often pass tariff costs to consumers, people may pay higher prices for imported goods, leading to reduced purchasing power and potentially increased overall inflation if many goods are affected.
Benefits for Domestic Producers: Higher prices on imports may encourage consumers to buy from domestic producers, which can help protect local jobs in industries that compete with imports.
Economic Retaliation: When one country imposes tariffs, affected countries sometimes respond with their own tariffs, creating a trade war. This can reduce demand for exports, hurting industries that rely on global markets.
Reduced Consumer Choice: Tariffs can limit the variety of goods available to consumers by making certain foreign products more expensive or unavailable.

5. Example of Tariffs in Action
Suppose the U.S. government imposes a 25% tariff on imported steel to protect American steel manufacturers. If an imported ton of steel costs $800 without tariffs, it would now cost $1,000 with the tariff.
American companies that use steel, like car manufacturers or construction firms, now face higher costs. They might either pass these costs onto consumers by raising prices or absorb the cost, reducing their profit margins. If domestic steel remains cheaper or competitive in price, local producers benefit as companies shift to buy American steel.

6. Economic Impact
Short-Term Impact: Tariffs can provide temporary protection to domestic industries and create government revenue. However, they often lead to higher consumer prices and potential trade disputes.
Long-Term Impact: Prolonged tariffs can reduce a nation’s competitiveness, as industries reliant on imports face higher costs. Additionally, if trade partners respond with tariffs on U.S. goods, it can reduce demand for U.S. exports, leading to job losses in industries like agriculture and manufacturing that depend on foreign markets.

Tariffs are a way for governments to influence trade, protect domestic industries, and generate revenue, but they also have complex, often disruptive, effects on the economy, impacting consumers, industries, and international trade relations.

Tariffs drive up costs for middle class and struggling families - they do not affect the rich because the rich already have the resources to buy anything they want and need - only us at the bottom suffer. This is how you can tell they don't care about anyone - they're promoting fucking all of the middle class and poor over by raising your costs on EVERYTHING.

If we impose a 25% tariff on China, the cost of goods will likely raise to 30% more than they are to offset the tariff - think about the cost of EVERYTHING you buy going up 30%. It's fucking ridiculous to even think about this as an economic strategy in a GLOBAL MARKET. Only fucking idiots support this.

For all of you who think there was something strategic about @elonmusk buying Twitter, it was simply hubris. He made a brag, got suckered into making a legally binding offer, tried to back out of it, and got forced to follow through due to litigation. #Genius
After he was forced to follow through on his promise to buy, he trial ballooned a bunch of dumb "mandatory" pay features, like the blue check, which many steadfastly refused to even humor in a hilarious public manner. Musk then tried to haggle the price of the check mark.

@elonmusk As more and more people started abandoning Twitter, Musk censored any link to Mastodon. After that, he announced that access to the API would also have a new pay structure, which resulted in a number of app developers that people liked completely abandoning the platform.

If you want to look back at the true turning point for the USA, it was the failure of @BarackObama to hold torturers, war criminals and wall street fraudsters accountable, all while he let others suffer or prosecuted them for lesser offenses. Hollywood bullsh*t is a distraction.
@BarackObama It's embarrassing that his camp has embraced criminal George W. Bush as sane or moderate in comparison to Trump. The Truth is that both Bush and Obama enabled Trumpism. Either could have stopped it. Bush did it through embracing extremists. Obama did it by failing to prosecute.
@BarackObama The threat of fascism is the rot of the Republican and Democratic parties, who have made it abundantly clear that, outside of re-election and holding power, they simply don't give a f*ck about you. Selling out to authoritarians and fascists in response is stupid, but predictable.

Now Elon is making fun of activists. Activists are the people who stand up when they see something going wrong in society. They're the ones who get up from the couch instead of doing nothing. Society doesn't progress without these people. [thread]
Elon, the spoiled little rich kid has never had to walk amongst us down at the bottom. Many of us struggle day to day to make ends meet, to pay college loans, to put food on our tables, to keep the electricity on, to keep a roof over our heads - Elon always had a silver spoon.
Elon (@elonmusk) is punching blindly, looking for a redirect because he knew bad press was coming his way. His little temper tantrums about democrats, the left, and "wacktivists" are a result of him losing control of the narrative.

Here's why you should have fun too. Here's the USA courts explained. 1/?
Every Judge is political, whether through a local appointment or by a vote. Actual judicial competence doesn't matter. They pretend it's part of the equation, but it isn't. It usually comes down to donations, which earns appointment or party endorsement. 2/?
The solid majority that get there use it as a spring board for higher positions. Yet, they are over worked for their job. However, since parties can appeal, they don't care. So, they shoot from the hip based on politics or personal biases. It's easy. 3/?
