The below analysis focuses on IDF losses during the ground operation, which began on Oct 27, 2023, and covers the first year of the war, documenting 355 announced losses up to Oct 27, 2024 >
ยฒ ๐บ๐๐๐๐๐๐ are primarily based on publications by the IDF spokesman and an official page with basic details about the fallen soldier. Additionally, I supplemented information from newspaper articles, channels of military reporters, podcasts, and family members.
ยณ Disclaimer:
The analysis is statistical and should be interpreted carefully (e.g., itโs not normalized by population or unit duration in Gaza).
As an OSINT project, errors may exist due to sources' nature.
A file with full data and source links will be provided at the end.

The following maps illustrate the distribution of hometowns of the KIA IDF soldiers.
The cities shown in the Top 10 graph sum up to 56% (200) of all the KIA.
Notably, there is an unproportionally high number of casualties from Jerusalem.
โต KIA come from all Israeli ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐.
Numbers from Judea and Samaria (West Bank) are high for their low population size, but without recruitment data, it's best not to draw quick conclusions.
Note: Central District (25%) stats exclude separate Tel Aviv District
โถ ๐ป๐๐๐๐๐๐๐
IDF losses align with key stages and events in the ground maneuver.
On average, one soldier was killed per day during this year.
The longest non-death and death periods are both - 18 days.
All losses occurred over 134d of the calendar year (36.5% of the year)
โท ๐จ๐๐๐
Most soldiers were killed in the northern Gaza Strip, aligning with the duration and scale of forces operating there.
The area info comes from IDF.
In some cases, I corrected wrong categorization: e.g. Zaytoun neighbourhood in Gaza was labeled by IDF as Central area
โธ Beyond IDF information, I gathered details on the city or exact event location from social media and news articles.
I managed to locate 77% of the data. Most gaps are from the first two months of fighting, with very limited public information.
See red note in Gaza City plot.
โน
The KIA average ๐จ๐๐ is 25.4.
For officers and reservists, the average is higher, as shown in the graph.
The oldest fallen soldier was a 51-year-old reservist.
ยนโฐ
18 (5%) of the fatalities succumbed to their ๐พ๐๐๐๐ ๐ more than a day after being injured.
This is a very low figure compared to the large number of severely wounded reported by the army
ยนยน Most of the KIA are from active personnel, with 'Staff Sergeant' as the most common ๐น๐๐๐.
Among officers, 'Captain' is most frequent.
Two highest-ranking fallen were 'Colonels'.
Most ranks were raised by IDF after death, according to procedure.
See next post.
ยนยฒ
The IDF has an established protocol for rank adjustments, including posthumous promotions. Commander opinion and circumstances also impact decisions.
Promotions are more common at lower ranks.
186 (52%) out of 355 soldiers were raised in their rank after their death.
ยนยณ
Addressing a claim about missing Privates and Corporals among the fallen: IDF ranks are time-based, and combat training is very long. The youngest soldier that will finish a combat training will be at Corporal Rank.
All fallen corporals were promoted to sergeants, eventually.
ยนโด The highest-ranking officer was the commander of Brigade 401. Additionally, 3 battalion commanders, 3 deputy commanders, 16 company commanders, and 11 deputy company commanders were KIA.
Overall, 63 soldiers (17%) with command roles, from junior to senior positions, were KIA.
ยนโต
In terms of high-level type of unit classification, most of the KIA were from the Infantry Corps.
Classification was done by official definition of every battalion or specific definition found in public sources.
ยนโถ Division 162, Givati Brigade 84 and Sayeret Givati battalion had the highest amount of losses among its category.
Battalion or brigade parent unit affiliation was determined according to the official designation and not temporary assignment.
ยนโท
Determining causes of death was the most challenging part.
I identified causes for 93% (333) of cases, with RPG and IEDs being most common.
Unidentified cases may be accident-related, as I have a gap of 20 cases (36 vs 56) compared to public IDF records.
ยนโธ Accidents and friendly fire are most discrete causes, which are usually not shared.
Friendly Fire was the most common accident reason.
Overall, this category is 10-15% out of all KIA.
As stated earlier, the discrepancy in numbers is from the first two months of the maneuver.
ยนโน
Lastly, hereโs the breakdown of causes by unit type:
For armoured and engineering units, RPG was the main cause.
For infantry forces, IEDs were the deadliest.
Naturally, the category of accidents is the second common reason for engineering forces.

๐งต After two weeks of data collection, I would like to share an analysis of the data collected:
- Summary.
- Geographic analysis.
- About source of the funeral publications.
TL;DR:
- 194 killed #Hezbollah operatives.
- Dataset is partial.
- Data represents Southern Lebanon only
2/ The collected dataset contains names of Hezbollah members, funeral town, home towns.
When home town is not specified explicitly, the funeral town is considered as home town.
Since 23-Sep, there are 194 funeral announcements.
Sometimes, they are published retroactively.
3/ The towns analysis reveals that all of the mentioned operatives are exclusively residents of southern Lebanon.
In addition, it can be seen that residents of border villages are buried in the northern towns of the South region.
Attached heatmaps per home and funerals towns
ยน The IDF operation in northern Samaria, West Bank, has ended.
In total, according to the #Palestinian MoH, 36 Palestinians were killed during 9 days of operation.
In the thread, I will present an analysis of the identities of the deceased.
TL;DR At least 86% - combatants
ยฒ 24 out of 36 were officially declared as belonging to resistance organizations. Some of them were claimed by several organizations
Hamas: 7
PIJ: 12
Fatah: 9
Also, I found social media evidences regarding another 7 who fought the IDF but were not announced by any organization.
ยณ 5 out 7 unofficial combatants were declared by organizations as Mujahideens, with no clear affiliation.
Regarding the other 2, I've found strong evidence in social media: picture posing with rifle, funeral flag, IDF video showing him throwing of explosive devices.
ยฒ
The only official statement was released by Hamas Goverment Media Office ~2h after the strike with a number of 100 martyrs.
5h after the strike, the first name list was published with 19 names in it.
40m later, palestinians published the list with 32 names.
ยณ
On top of 32 names, I've found an additional 16 names. Total: 48 names.
Summary per type:
Men: 34 (70%)
Women: 2 (4%)
Children: 7 (15%)
Not enough info to define: 5 (10%) [except one unisex name, most likely 4 of them are men]
๐งต ยน MoH Gaza published an updated list of identified names and details of the deceased palestinians up to the end of June.
The list contains 28,185 names. 9,715 less than what was claimed by the same MoH at the end of June.
Very brief analysis reveals several anomalies. โฌ๏ธโฌ๏ธ
ยฒ
According to the Gaza Goverment Media Office (Hamas local authorities), there were 37,765 'martyrs' overall since Oct 7.
They also provide a specific count per child and women (which allow us to calculate men).
Let's compare the published name list counts vs. Hamas claimed.
ยณ First, we have more men in the identified names list than in Hamas claims.
And we have much less identified names for women and children.
For men's category, keep in mind that we already have more men names out of 'verified' 28K that Hamas claims for men out of 38K.
๐งตSo we saw that there are no women's names on the list of the killed at the Nuseirat UNRWA school, despite the statements of MoH Gaza (14 children, 9 women).
Now, we will check how many children actually died in an airstrike based on social media analysis. Scroll downโฌ๏ธโฌ๏ธ
2/ Overall, I succeed to find the names or/and faces of 22 palestinians that are claimed to be killed at the Nuseirat school strike.
Here, you can see the faces and names of 13 out of 22
(1-7, 9-14, 17 in the names list)
There are 2 children among them (num 12 and 13)โฌ๏ธโฌ๏ธ
3/
Numbers 14-18 in the names list.
No children here.
Most of the data I collected from the quoted post and Facebook.
1/ IDF strike at Tal-El-Sultan fatalities stands on ~35 (CNN reports)
I want to share my observations about this night and how this event was covered by palestinians.
I will use the internal Hamza sub-channel, which focuses on field reports only โฌ๏ธ t.me/hamz0831/125855
2/ The first report about the strike occurred at 20:47.
You can click the link at the first post and follow the events at Gaza Strip that night by yourself.
The channel is focused only on field reports and covers the whole Gaza Strip events. โฌ๏ธ
3/ For the first 30 min, there reports about injured which arrived to Emirati Hospital.
30 min after, first report appeared about martyrs. On the image, 2 bodies.
Almost 1 hour after the strike, there is a first video from Emirati Hospital of injured palestinians.
