Trump should immediately take advantage of a weakened Islamic Republic and launch a US aerial military campaign on the terror state

My piece @TheTPPInstitute —
For a Policy to Confront the Islamic Republic of Iran
🧵
insights.telosinstitute.net/p/for-a-policy…
***The time is now for a radical rethinking of our relationship to the world's lead state sponsor of terror.

Conventional wisdom of both political parties in Washington since Iran’s revolution in 1979 has been that military action against the Islamic Republic is unwise. Trump himself has repeatedly said he has no interest in regime change in Iran and is even willing to reward the terror state financially if it relinquishes its nuclear program.
***Trump still seeks only a deal with Khamenei.

Even after October 7 and the overthrow of Assad, the prevailing assumption in Washington remains unchanged: military action against Tehran would be too costly and too risky.

A Trump deal with the Islamic Republic would keep Iran’s evil empire in power and provide it with security guarantees and economic opportunity.
***Tehran is counting on isolationism prevailing in Trump's second term, ie @JDVance & @TulsiGabbard winning out over @marcorubio & @michaelgwaltz

The Islamic Republic plays the long game, betting it will not face a unified, coherent U.S. foreign policy aimed at its destruction.
***What does it cost America to merely "contain" the Islamic Republic?

+ Our military presence in the region, intelligence operations, cyber defense, sanctions enforcement, diplomatic efforts, and domestic security cost the American taxpayer billions each year.

+ Our military aid to Israel and other allies in the region cost the U.S. taxpayer over $10 billion each year.

+ The tremendous burden on global maritime navigation from the Islamic Republic’s control of the Red Sea via Houthi rebels.
***The regime has invested heavily in a creating a messaging apparatus on American soil to sustain a mere containment strategy against it and to extract massive financial concessions.

@JZarif, the Iran Lobby, and the Iran Experts Initiative are mobilized to appeal to the incoming Trump admin, to feign pliant accommodation, encourage a new deal, and ensure regime survival.
***There is an outsized view in Washington of the real power of the brutal regime. The Islamic Republic is deeply dysfunctional and heavily penetrated by Israeli intelligence. Its military is decrepit. It is detested by the Iranian people.

Unlike dictatorships, totalitarian states are structurally incapable of reform. Iran’s Islamist terror mafia can only and must be degraded, ultimately defeated. The Iranian people know this. But democracies are actively, deliberately emboldening their existential enemy,
even as its tentacles grow. What is it about Islamism that makes even classical liberals cower? The USSR was a far more powerful state than the Islamic Republic, but Iran’s tyrants have the West’s self-loathing and acquiescence on their side, and after Iraq/Bush, Syria/Obama,
and Afghanistan/Biden, seems policy elites want submission: the grotesquely inhumane cabal ruling from Tehran can stick around. But with visionary leadership rooted in democratic principles, America and the FreeWorld can defeat Iran-Russia-China. Could we have another Reagan?

Barely recognized by Western feminists, the Iranian women’s movement is the forefront of a valiant struggle for human dignity against a fascist ideology determined to deny Muslim girls & women the rights & freedoms rightly cherished in the West. #LetUsTalk quillette.com/2019/01/20/the…
While Iranian women are braving arrest and violent repression to defy draconian religious dress codes...college campuses have either looked the other way or asked us to admire those women who adhere to Islamist norms in defiance of “Westernization.” #LetUsTalk

In @AlArabiya_Eng I note failures of JCPOA & big leverage US now has. Biden admin should lift sanctions on Iran only in exchange for verified improvements in freedom, via Helsinki Accords model. I also offer more policies to foster democratic transition. english.alarabiya.net/en/views/news/…
"Following the deal...the regime’s sponsorship of annihilation of the Syrian nation was put on overdrive; its global terror, imperial dominion, proxy wars, & killing of US soldiers expanded; & nothing of the financial windfall delivered to the mafia state reached the people."
"Maximum pressure...combined with an increasingly unified Israeli & Arab front, as well as an Iranian society mobilized against any prospect for government-led reform & instead for wholesale, democratic overthrow mean...[Biden] wields tremendous leverage on the Islamic Republic."

Forgive this long thread. In case of interest, these are my thoughts on the US election--
I've been a strong, outspoken supporter of Trump Iran policy. As someone focused on achieving democracy for my homeland, I see it as more effective & morally just than any before. But...
despite unprecedented progress to counter the regime, expose its repression & corruption, & amplify, support the democratic aspirations of Iranians, I cannot bring myself to vote Trump. For most people (& nearly all Republicans) I know, voting #BidenHarris is obvious, but for me
it's a moral dilemma. Let me tell you why. Since I came to the US as a child during the '79 revolution, it's been both my dream & moral duty to use the freedom I enjoy as an American to help my compatriots in Iran win theirs. During the Obama yrs, those of us who rejected

Parts of an email I wrote in 2013 to @tparsi, copying those in DC who have since realized we’ve been right all along:

“How shameful that you purport to represent the will of the Iranian-American people...
...you have] a morally perverse, dishonest propaganda campaign aiming to achieve the one and only mission your so called ‘association’ has ever had: the removal of sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran and a soft, appeasing American foreign policy...
...Rather than educate the Iranian-American community, you intentionally misinform them, preying on their good hearted concern for their loved ones. Criticizing elected officials is a cherished right in the US, but your tactics resemble those of Kayhan's Hossein Shariatmadari...
