The most important thing to understand about the climate and ecological emergency, is that profound and radical change, is coming whether you like it or not. That change might come far sooner, than most people, almost everyone, envisages.
1/🧵
"There are now no non-radical futures. The choice is between immediate and profound social change or waiting a little longer for chaotic and violent social change. In 2023 the window for this choice is rapidly closing." @KevinClimate

"And change is coming, whether you like it or not." - @GretaThunberg

I'm now absolutely certain, that hardly anyone understands what this means.

3/npr.org/2019/09/23/763…
I cannot speak for either Greta or Professor Kevin Anderson, but as I have been saying this for far longer than they have (like before Greta was born), I think I'm well qualified to say what this means.
4/
The biggest failure in climate communication, is to focus on big physical impacts at the end of the century, X amount sea level rises, areas of the Earth becoming uninhabitable through extreme heat etc. As if we're going to suddenly find ourselves 75 years in the future.
5/
As if zum, we're suddenly going to have found ourselves 75 years in the future, with roughly the same sort of civilization, but all these big changes to the Earth's system, that we're going to have to deal with.

Really????????
6/
I have to pinch myself about the sheer stupidity and unreality of all this.

What do they think will have happened in the intervening 75 years as the temperatures rises, the sea levels rise, ocean acidity gets worse, and our agriculture is devastated?
7/
I have never seen any realistic evaluation about the impacts on our civilization, economies and societies over the next couple of decades starting now. The chances of our civilization, lasting to experience these massive changes, is just about zero.
8/
I've always been open-minded, that this is understood somewhere, just that I have never found it. Everything I've read, the presentations I've seen, at some time I have to stop listening, because the person delivering the summary has obviously not thought about so much.
9/
I do appreciate the difficulty in giving some coherent joined up account, because I've been trying to do it myself for half a century. But I've never tried to sell a book, stuffed with this empty waffle.
10/
I really, am still struggling to see, how we will get through the next 5-15 years, let alone 75 years into the future. It is not just climate change, and biodiversity itself, but the whole dynamic that will change.
11/
Climate change denial, and I am not just talking about the Trumpian idiocy type stuff, but centrist politicians who claim to accept the science, the techno-optimist scientists. All this fantasy thinking, is going to get increasingly difficult to maintain.
12/
Reality, is what it is, now what people imagine it is. What will happen, is what will happen. People's ideas about it are pretty much irrelevant. Really, you don't have to take my word for it, because unless you're very old, you'll get to see it yourself.
13/
Of course, nothing is fixed. I can guarantee, the way the public see this crisis, is going to undergo massive perception change, and the deniers of reality are going to be left with zero credibility, as their fantasy views of reality, collide with actual reality.
14/
THE only question, is will this massive public perception change, happen too late, when the system goes into free fall, or will we be able to affect some change to our system, before it's too late.
15/
All we can be certain of is that profound radical change is coming, whether we like it or not. Exactly, what rationale lies behind trying to maintain business as usual BaU, when it is physically impossible, I have no idea.
16/
There's a lot of debate about how much politicians and oligarchs understand this, and whether there's method in their madness. IMHO, this is a total waste of time, because whether they're trying to hoodwink themselves or the public, doesn't matter. They're spouting nonsense.
17/
Yes, I can foresee scenarios, but they are not fixed, and which one happens, depends on so much. However, what is absolutely certain, is that there will be radical change, and most of what you take for granted now, will no longer be here.
18/
In other words, it is really quite irrational, and quite frankly insane that major action is not being taken, to change direction, from the globally suicidal course, humanity is currently on. Don't say no one told you, when the shit hits the fan!

"Why is Labour so afraid to admit that we must tax the rich to help the poor?"

It's an excellent question, and one I'll answer here. In essence, senior politicians are the poodles of the very rich. Especially Keir Starmer and co.

1/🧵theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
If anyone has any doubts about this, look at the extraordinary attacks on the sick and disabled, by not only Keir Starmer, Rachel Reeves etc, but the leaders of the Conservative and Reform Parties, and especially, the Tory Press. They are literally frothing at the mouth.
2/
Yet, public opinion is very clear. There's strong public support, for taxing the very rich. Like 3/4 of the public. So why are the senior politicians of all 3 parties, likely to form the next government, and oligarch owned Tory Press, going on the warpath against the disabled?

Does anyone know what the name is, for the logical fallacy, which I call the walk around problem?

What I mean by this, is when you make a well-supported factual assertion, and an opponent, will blatantly just walk around it, refusing to acknowledge the point.
1/🧵
Often this point, is a fundamental premise and assumption of many arguments. You can completely undo these arguments, by totally undermining the fundamental premises of these arguments. But it is totally useless, if the opponent just refuses to acknowledge the point.
2/
I have come across this problem not just on social media, but in the mainstream media, in politics, when I have been forced to make a formal complaint. It is possible for a person, especially in a position of power, to just refuse to acknowledge something.

I have repeatedly seen people, including some climate scientists, falsely claim that okay, climate warming might get pretty bad, but it won't be the end of the world.

I'm baffled by such claims.
1/🧵
It's a straw many logical fallacy argument, as no informed person, is claiming that climate change will cause the world i.e. the planet, to cease to exist.

Rather, the claim has always been it could lead to a wide scale loss of life, and the collapse of our civilization.
2/
If you refer to the possible end of our civilization or its collapse, these "optimists" will claim there is no scientific evidence for this.

Whilst actually, the resilience of our civilization to climate change, has never been scientifically studied.

The climate crisis situation, has changed dramatically in the last few years. It is now very clear, that all major governments, will seriously resist the climate action necessary, to prevent climate catastrophe, and up to 3-4C of warming.

1/🧵
Up until just a few years ago, it seemed possible/plausible, although unlikely, that major governments may have eventually agreed, to the sort of action necessary to avert climate catastrophe, such as the phasing out of fossil fuels. This hope is now completely gone/dead.
2/
This has profound implications, as to how the climate crisis should be perceived i.e. what the reality is, and the tactics necessary to prevent the climate induced collapse of our civilization. Yet the same strategies are being used, as before.

There seems to be some sort of censorship going on, because this very important thread I wrote, does not appear on my X profile timeline, despite the very clear evidence that I wrote and posted it.

1/🧵threadreaderapp.com/thread/1941216…
Here's a direct link to my first post from @threadreaderapp, yet these posts do not appear on my profile timeline

What is going on here? The evidence I raise here, says government level climate action, has always been fake. That we're being gaslighted.

2/
As I point out here, on every other matter, where politicians/governments/the mainstream media want to change public attitude, they use widespread and repeated warnings, to create public fear of these issues.

With every other issue, when governments/politicians/the media want to change public attitudes, they use fear.

Yet, bizarrely with climate change and it's dangers, they tell us they mustn't spread fear, because it is counter-productive.

I say, this is blatant gaslighting.
1/🧵
I say the reason that governments/politicians/the media don't want to communicate climate change dangers with the fear tactics, they use to change public attitudes and opinion, with every other issue, is because they don't want the public to demand climate action
2/
Just think about it for a moment. With every other issue from drugs, smoking, crime, obesity, and now with immigration, terrorism, threats of other powers, the left, what tactics do they reach for, but fear tactics, because it works?
