@DataRepublican, an actual Georgia Tech Engineer here:
Even without resorting to quantum physics, solely using Newtonian physics and taking into account significant digits the way you presented the quiz, there is actually a range of correct answers!
Let me explain 1/🧵
OK, @DataRepublican presented this problem:
A traveler must make a 60-mile round trip between two towns, Aliceville and Bobtown.
The distance each way is 30 miles. Going from Aliceville to Bobtown, the traveler drives at exactly 30 miles per hour.
By the time they reach Bobtown, they decide they want to average 60 miles per hour for the entire 60-mile journey. 2/🧵
However, let's rewrite the problem taking into account the measurement tolerances due to significant digits:
A traveler must make a (6 x 10¹) mile round trip between two towns, Aliceville and Bobtown.
The distance each way is (3 x 10¹) miles. Going from Aliceville to Bobtown, the traveler drives at exactly (3.0 x 10¹) miles per hour.
By the time they reach Bobtown, they decide they want to average (6 x 10¹) MPH for the entire (6 x 10¹) mile journey.
3/🧵
Now, how many miles are really in the round trip between Aliceville and Bobtown?
6 x 10¹ miles when resolved to significant digits as @DataRepublican presented it can be anywhere between:
55 miles < 6 x 10¹ miles < 65 miles.
4/🧵
Repeating for velocity ("speed" if you never learned vector-based Newtonian physics):
"Going from Aliceville to Bobtown, the traveler drives at exactly (3.0 x 10¹) miles per hour"
This gives us a velocity range for Aliceville→Bobville of:
29 mph < ν < 31 mph
5/🧵
Recapping where we are,
• 55 miles < Aliceville→Bobville→Aliceville < 65 miles;
• 29 mph < Aliceville→Bobville < 31 mph.
This is simply a measurement tolerance issue with two independent variables, that we were taught in freshman chemistry to illustrate the principle. 6/🧵
@DataRepublican Just to get our arms around the problem, since
55 miles < Aliceville→Bobville→Aliceville < 65 miles,
let's take the 55 mile figure.
This means with ν = 31 mph for Aliceville→Bobville, the time actually used is:
(55÷2) miles
——————— ≈ 0.89 hours ≈ 53:40
31 miles/hour
7/🧵
Having used 53:40 to cover (55÷2 = 27.5) miles for Aliceville→Bobville, that leaves us at most 6:40 (400 seconds) to cover the 27.5 miles for the Bobville→Aliceville return trip.
27.5 miles ÷ 400 seconds = .0688 miles/sec ≈ 250 mph or faster, depending on time, distance and velocity tolerances..
OK @DataRepublican, prove me wrong.😉

@DataRepublican @EYakoby @DataRepublican, if it wasn't for this Mar. 2016 @realDonaldTrump speech (written by Prof. F.H. "Frank" Buckley & his wife Esther Goldberg) to #AIPAC easing Jews he was Good for Israel, that support & $$$ would have gone to Hillary from @BillAckman & c.
~
@DataRepublican @EYakoby @realDonaldTrump @BillAckman Also @DataRepublican, #AIPAC is bipartisan: They funded successful multimillion-dollar primary challenges to anti-semitic Reps @CoriBush ($15M) & "Fire Alarm" Rep @JamaalBowmanNY $9M) in 2024. (2/3🧵)

@DataRepublican @EYakoby @realDonaldTrump @BillAckman @CoriBush @JamaalBowmanNY @RuthPapazian Finally @DataRepublican, here in Georgia @AIPAC is tag-teaming with @RJC to defeat Democrat Jon @SenOssoff—Who is Jewish!—due to his anti-Israel stance siding with Biden against Israel after 10/7.
Buckets of money💵 will go into this winnable race (3/3🧵).

If the day ends in a "Y" @JonhKonrad is bitching about something.
Today's whining?
"I live in the People's Republic of Taxachusetts and Marc Andreesen says my kid with great grades can't get into an 'elite' private university."
1/🧵
@JohnKonrad, what would you do if I told you there is another alternative; and if you play *your* cards right, your kid can go to one of the very top Engineering schools for FREE, without even paying some "consultant?"
2/🧵
@johnkonrad @JohnKonrad, pack the moving van and move to Georgia: Savannah annd Lake Lanier are nice.
Our public universities—Including @GeorgiaTech (enrollment >54,250) —have two sets of admission standards: In-state and out-of-state, as 50% of enrollment MUST be in-state by statute.

@MonicaLMarks @MonicaLMarks, you unintentionally have shown your comprehensive ignorance for STEM education and Engineering colleges selecting students: Raw numbers matter for the *statistically proven* Projected Grade Point Average (PGPA).

@MonicaLMarks @MonicaLMarks, let me ask you this, as we welcome @Zach_Yadegari to @GeorgiaTech with our 54,300 students:

@MonicaLMarks @zach_yadegari @GeorgiaTech @MonicaLMarks, let me give you a clue on selecting STEM students: We use *OBJECTIVE* criteria for rolling admissions; and the only time we look at “statements” is in marginal cases.
Look at the @USNews rankings:

is correct. It’s called an “Excise Tax;” and it’s a “Value Added Tax” as in Europe. It would be MINIMUM 25% here, on top of State & local sales taxes. Exempting food—like many States do—makes it more progressive. 1/🧵
@JoshFL321 & @DefiyantlyFree: Not only would a Value Added Tax—VAT—be on goods, but also services. Comparing to Britain at 20%, they spend 10.9% of GDP on health care, while we spend 17.6% of GDP, 6.9% just on Medicare & Medicaid alone. 2/🧵
