I've been thinking more about this, and about the surrounding conversation in @Alphastream's thread, and I have a few further Thoughts.

Some #rpgtheoryjuly musings incoming. #DnD's lore is tied to its chargen mechanics in a supremely satisfying way. The "choose one from column A and one from column B" of selecting race + class is VERY MUCH a Feature of the system.
